+flask
paul, i don't know how far you're willing to drive, but if you get no local bites, you're welcome to come get stupid with us. we're thinking about a swing into NH soon anyway, so although you'd have to drive north, we could at least split the difference somewhat. it doesn't matter if you get to camp at one or at six. dinner is still at six. +EScout
Getting started I have had a Legend since December and I like it a lot. The best way to get started: Turn the unit on and get your manual and go through it, page by page, while pushing the buttons. This could take a couple of hours. Then go into a field and practice putting in waypoints, move around, set tracks, return to your waypoints. This could take a couple of hours. After 6 or 7 hours, you should be fairly comfortable using your new GPSr. If there is something you do not understand, do a search in these topics and you will most likely find the answer. You can also go to the Yahoo etrex groups and read past posts. I did all of the above and am now using my Legend with ease. Quote Link to comment
+Chichikov
Paul, Welcome. I live in Exeter and would be happy to get together to hunt some caches and help you out with your Legend (that's what I'm using, too). Drop me a line. This new dump of snow we just got ought to melt off within the next few days. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. What does it matter where people go? Down to the wood where the blue-bells grow Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know. -A.A. Milne Quote Link to comment
geoStrider
Check out/print the online user's manual at Garmin.com. Depending on when your Legend was packaged it may have come with a prior version (6/01) of the manual. The most current is 10/02, but I know the older manual is still out there in new Legend boxes. The 10/02 manual covers more topics in much better detail. I've never been lost, but I was a might bewildered for three days once. brin
OK. This GPS comes real easy to the younger folks I am sure. Us older folks could use a simple? logical? list of steps to use our tool. My Legend has SO many functions that I become bewildered...... What I would appreciate seeing is a list of the steps one uses that make sense! I keep getting different screens and pages and want to just use the thing for a paper weight! I am a VietNam vet, taught myself to fly a plane, roofed and sided homes alone, rebuilt engines, mastered RC stunt flying, BUT this GPS has got my goat! Sorry to ramble, but just going through the book and clicking the buttons ain't getting it! I have more time behind me than ahead and would sure like to use this gizmo with authority, before my time runs out! Follow your bliss......the money will follow. Quote Link to comment
+Smitherington
I was with an adult nephew recently who had a Magellan Sport Trak and had not played with it. Of course, I wanted to play so I turned it on and went out in the yard. Walked around a bit. Got familiar with what the screens were showing me. Made a waypoint. Walked away. Walked back using the go-to function. Soom, he was out there playing with it and I never got it back. He learned how to use it. Then we did a cache. He had never used the go-to function but had found three caches. It helps to walk around with an experienced user for a few minutes. So, if you post a location, you will probably find someone willing to help. And brin, I am of the same vintage as you. You can do it. Where are you located? Quote Link to comment
brin
I am in Binghamton, NY. New to this eye taxing hobby. My wife bought my garmin etrex legend as a surprise gift (without any input from me, of course). Aren't women funny that way? I believe I would have gotten something with a bigger screen.. but anyway, I now have to put it to use. where in Minnisota do you reside? Or is it New Hampshire? Quote Link to comment

You're gonna love the Legend. Mine came with a big book and a litte book. The little on was just the getting started part. It's about all I ever needed. Get out and use it, get a little frustratd, it'e gonna be OK! Bluespreacher "We've got the hardware and the software, the plans and the maps ..." -- Citizen Wayne Kramer Quote Link to comment
