Mapping Software

I've got Garmin's eTrax and use my pda to download waypoints and handle all that.

But what I'm now interested in is a mapping software so that I can make the most of my time when I go.

Any suggestions? My son and I are planning a long day of total caching and I want to make sure we're not double back tracking while out there.

Is there a mapping software that will allow you to put the caches coordinates in and then show them all on a map?

I'm not sure I totally understand the mapping software concept anyway.

Thanks for your help

I have a laptop loaded with GSAK and National Geographic TOPO that I bring in the car with me when I go caching.

I have all the area caches marked on the TOPO map and when I connect my GPS to the computer, I get real-time tracking so I can navigate cache to cache with ease. GSAK also allows me to have acess to all the cache pages including the 5 most recent logs.

Well, the mapping software basically comes in two flavors. Street navigation and off-road navigation. There are hybrids out there, but they don't do either job very well.

Street navigation will usually route you right to the place you want to go (provided it is on a road) and usually provide voice directions. Once you leave the road, they are pretty useless. Streets & Trips and Mapopolis are examples. I would agree with Poindexter that Mapopolis is a great program. I use it for work.

Off-road navigation usually uses topo maps to get you to a location where there are no roads. Examples would be Memory-Map and Ozi Explorer. Generally, they don't guide you down the streets, but they do show your position on or off road.

Hope that helps a little.
