Shadow's
For those of you that are blessed with the language of HTML I would like to ask a favor. I have a couple of books on this but it goes in one ear and out the other. I would like to know if there is a program that I can get that will take care of this process for me. If not I would love to hear from any of you that can speak this language. LOL Please post or email me. Thanks, Rick Quote Link to comment
The Leprechauns
Hi, Look at the FAQ topic that's pinned to the top of the forum, and scroll down to Bons' post with a link to his "Guide to Quick and Dirty HTML for Your Cache Page" This guide covers most of the code needed for beginners. +welch
I know very little html, but doing the html for a cache page is very simple. Using a program might actually be worse because it may want to write all the code, as if for a website. When most of that is done for you on the cache page, your just changing the stuff like the fonts a little bit, not starting from scratch. If it doesn't that there is way more code than you need, and it can in some cases choke pda devices and such. Quote Link to comment
Shadow's
Well what I want to use is in code. I have seen some that make it look like a letter or a map. I want to use braille or navy flag code things like that. How can I do these things? Any info? Thanks Quote Link to comment
Shadow's
Ok, I went to Bons' post, but to me it does not tell me how to do what I want to do. I need to know how to place things like I posted into the cache that I wish to make It does not tell me how to do this as far as I can tell Thanks, Need more info Rick Quote Link to comment
welch
can you provide an example cache page? Quote Link to comment
The Leprechauns
most treasure maps and puzzles with symbols use a .jpg image that's then uploaded to the cache page. For morse code you can just use - and . but maybe step up the font size. For braille and semaphore, these are likely a bunch of little .gif's strung together. Madness522
I downloaded Easy HTML from this site when I started learning HTML. When you get it loaded you can select what you want to do and a window pops up that you fill in some information and it generates the correct syntax for the command you want. It isn't as robust as writing the code yourself but you will get the idea. Quote Link to comment
Markwell
Braille and a treasure map would both certainly have to be created as an image in some other program and then uploaded to the cache page. Then you'll use HTML on the cache page to show the image. Quote Link to comment
AtoZ
The wasiest way to do it is with MS Word. Just create your doc and then save it as HTML. You can create about 80% of what you want to do this way, pictures, tables etc.... and it is fairly straight forward. GIve a shout of you need more help. cheers Quote Link to comment

Ladybug Kids
Acutally I think word is one of those programs that will add losts of extra junk Welch is correct about MS Word adding a lot of stuff that doesn't translate well to the cache page. After reviewing the html from the Word code, I was able to determine what works and does not work and stripped most of the "extra" stuff out during the cut and paste process. MSFrontpage renders a much cleaner version of html that from my experience cuts and pastes directly into the cache pages if you ignore all the header stuff before the <body> tag. To enter graphics like semaphore, braille, or other things, you'll need to upload them to your profile's gallery, the cache page, or another website, so their address can be inserted into the html code. Screen captures uploaded as a graphics file are another way to present graphics. Here's an example of the html code for a photo inserted on a cache page ( Lee's Cabin Fever Reliever) using a photo uploaded to the cache page: <img border="0" src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/02eece14-c77e-4d5e-ba8b-ac5ea065eb74.jpg" width="307" height="231"> Here's an example of the html code for a screen capture image inserted to a cache page (Plugged Near the Bike Path) using the image uploaded to the cache page: <p align="center"><img border="0" src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/b18bd0e7-d680-4126-9a2e-757ed140eee1.jpg" width="534" height="150"></p> When inserting images, I find it easiest to have two open browser windows for the cache page. One window is the edit cache page screen with the html text and the other window is the cache page with the uploaded images. I click on the desired image, copy the url, and "alt-tab" to the edit screen and paste the url into the html text line. Your "second" window could also be your profile page or another website, depending on where you store your images. Quote Link to comment
Shadow's
I thank each of you for the information you have given However I am still stumped and need more Ladybug. MSFrontpage renders a much cleaner version of html that from my experience cuts and pastes directly into the cache pages if you ignore all the header stuff before the <body> tag Can I create my cache page here and then transfer it over to the new cache page? If so how? To enter graphics like semaphore, braille, or other things, you'll need to upload them to your profile's gallery, the cache page, or another website, so their address can be inserted into the html code. Screen captures uploaded as a graphics file are another way to present graphics. I tried to find my profile gallery but could not find it. Are you talking about My controle panel? How do I upload them to the cache page? When you start a new cache page How do you start? Do you use the MSFront page or do you just enter the code becouse you know how? Is there a way to click on a cache page then go to properties and use that page as a guide, then cut and paste what I need? Sorry for all the questions. Quote Link to comment

Screen captures uploaded as a graphics file are another way to present graphics. I tried to find my profile gallery but could not find it. Are you talking about My controle panel? How do I upload them to the cache page? profile gallery, cache page, and another website are three differen't places. Profile gallery would be the place images, like your avatar are uploaded. You go to the 'my cache page' area, edit profile, then upload picture. To upload to 'cache page', log into the site and go to a cache you own. in the upper right corner click the link 'upload pictures', then name and browse to the location and click upload. another website, is of course another website. In any case once you have the image you want to use online somewhere, get its URL (web address), do you know how to do that? When you start a new cache page How do you start? Do you use the MSFront page or do you just enter the code becouse you know how? Is there a way to click on a cache page then go to properties and use that page as a guide, then cut and paste what I need? Sorry for all the questions. I don't understand the question. You may be able to right click your mouse and select 'view source', but that will show you all the html, which can be a lot. What is it your having trouble with???? Quote Link to comment

Ladybug Kids
Can I create my cache page here and then transfer it over to the new cache page? If so how?...When you start a new cache page How do you start? Do you use the MSFront page or do you just enter the code becouse you know how? If you are using MSFrontpage 2000 or 2002, create your page on the "Normal" tab, complete with graphics. Click on the "Preview" tab to verify your page is looking like you want it to. Note that the standard geocaching.com graphics will be added automatically and your graphics and text will be rendered over the top of the standard white background when you submit your cache page. You'll have to upload your graphics to the cache page, your profile, or another website gallery and insert the proper links/urls to get the graphics to appear on your cache page. I explained how I do the linking in an earlier post to this thread. Once your page looks the way you want it to, log on to your account on geocaching.com. Click on "Hide and Seek" a cache. Click on "just fill out our form." Fill out the top portion of the form and then just under the "Details" section, check the "The descriptions below are in HTML" box. Leave the "Yes, this cache is currently active," box unchecked so the reviewers won't see the cache page until you are done editing it. Enter your "Short Description." I generally don't put html here except for a hyperlink because you are limited to the number of characters you can put in the Short Description. Toggle to your MSFrontpage document. Click on the "HTML" tab. Block copy all the html between the <body> and </body> tags. Paste that block of text into the "Long Description" box on the cache page. Enter your hint in the "Hints/Spoiler Info" box. At this point, you can enter the reviewer note so you have it done. They won't see it until you check the "Yes, this cache is currently active," box. Go to the top of the page and click on "edit attributes" and select up to ten attributes for your cache page. Check the two "Yes" boxes at the bottom of the page (assuming you have read both documents) and then click on "Report a New Listing." Go to the top of the cache submittal page and click on "view listing." You will then get your first glimpse of how your cache page will appear on the geocaching website. If you want to make changes, click on "edit this cache" in the upper right-hand corner and you are free to tinker with the html. If the page appears the way you want it to, you can also enter the reviewer's note (unless you did it earlier) and check the "Yes, this cache is currently active" box. The reviewer will then see your page. I tried to find my profile gallery but could not find it. Log into your account on the geocaching.com website. Click on "My Cache Page." Click on the "View my Profile" button which is the one with the Groundspeak logo, and then click on the "Gallery" tab. All cache photos you have previously submitted will appear in the Gallery, any of which can be linked to your cache page. Alternatively, from the "My Cache Page," click on "edit profile," scroll down to the "My Photo" section, click on "change/edit, click on "upload a new image" and you can upload the graphics and photos you want for your cache page. How do I upload them to the cache page? Click on the the green "Upload images" button in the upper right hand corner. Is there a way to click on a cache page then go to properties and use that page as a guide, then cut and paste what I need? If you see a neat feature that you like on a webpage, click on "View, Source" in your web browser menu, and the ALL the html will be displayed. You'll have to scroll through the source code and look for the lines that have the desired feature. I've created a small library of features in a MSFrontpage file to copy and paste into my cache pages such as the local time and temperature that's displayed on Flat Along the Bike Path. There are several ways to do what I described above. I described as best I could what's been working for me. Quote Link to comment
Shadow's
don't understand the question. Will try again. When you go to the new cache page and you want to enter your info (in html or can you do it in another program language?) how do you start it You may be able to right click your mouse and select 'view source', but that will show you all the html, which can be a lot. I guess what I need is a sample of a page being started and its layout of the same. Quote Link to comment
Ladybug Kids
Decode This !!!!!!!!! by VT_EMT Looks like my Plugged Near the Bike Path cache. Unlike VT_EMT, I provided a hint and have had only one finder since November. I uploaded the bar codes as jpg images to the cache page. Then I inserted the bar codes into the "Long Description" using the following html generated by MSFrontpage: <p align="center"><img border="0" src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/b18bd0e7-d680-4126-9a2e-757ed140eee1.jpg" width="534" height="150"></p> <p align="center"><img border="0" src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/254819cc-0c7a-415a-8d0b-47a19ed2a0d2.jpg" width="571" height="150"></p> Hope this helps!!! Here's a screen capture the data entry page for "Plugged Near the Bike Path" with the html pasted in from MSFrontpage: Since you've placed some earlier caches, you know the boxes on the "Report a Cache" page don't show all the text, so what you see here is the code just for the bar code images. I don't think anything other than plain text or html may be used. Edited February 16, 2005 by Ladybug Kids Quote Link to comment

Shadow's
Sorry for not getting back with each of you sooner. Lots of work. I do thank each of you for your feedback and help. Lots to learn here. Getting front page but also looking at HTML. Question, My son told me that HTML is being phased out and somthing else would be taking its place. Is this true and if so should I put the time and effort into this or the new system? Went to the book store today and found a complete idiot's guide to Geocaching. lol I guess it was for me. Thanks again and would love to hear any more information you have on making a cache page of web page. Email me. Rick Quote Link to comment
