+robinego Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 I'm headed over into Victoria for the weekend with the family and the current exchange student. Would love some ideas for caches in the city as well as sights that are "must sees". My family members are "geo-ignorant-by-choice" (a cross I must bear) so ease is an issue since thier patience only goes so far. But, I would rather have too many listed than to learn I skipped over some that were "just around the corner". Oh, we are taking the ferry into/out of Port Townsend so if there are a few right in the vacinity that would be totally awesome. Thanks, Robin Quote
+Half-Canadian Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 I'm headed over into Victoria for the weekend with the family and the current exchange student. Did you mean THIS weekend, as in February 13, or next weekend as in February 19? I can give you a list of cool caches to do, but don't want to waste time listing them if you've already left Quote
+Prying Pandora Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 We looked for this cache on our way to the Butchart Gardens from Victoria. Best DNF we ever had - the view from up there was fantastic! If you go from Port Angeles there is another cache that you need to take the ferry to do. Nobody has found it yet, so you could be FTF. Well that's a duh on my part, I guess I should have put that part in huh? You couldn't read my mind? Will be leaving early the morning of Friday the 18th and returning evening on the 21st (4 day weekend). We will have the car so we can see some sights out a ways, but I wouldn't want to drive "just" for a cache since I have the impatient familial units. Now if you can suggest a sight that has a cache nearby... Appreciate any help. -R- Quote

fishiam Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 I was in Victoria on business a few weeks ago and got to do an afternoon of caching. I'd recommend these three in city caches - you'll get nice views and they are not difficult. 1. Sea Strait (GCJ7CQ) - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...46-f03dc076d6cc 2. Octopus's Garden (GCGEHO) - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...9a-efb75abd0914 3. Crows in the Harbour (GCF786) - http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...6c-4c3d36d1db6d peace, fishiam Quote
+Half-Canadian Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 There are several nice virtuals right around the inner harbour area that would make a nice walkabout for the family: Crows visit the Govenor of Nootka Cold Hard Fruit Whats Cooking? Crows in the square Another nearby: You're Going Around in Circles Anyway One of my favourites for scenic view and historical value is this one: Crows at Harpoon Rock Nice short trek through a beautiful Garry Oak grove: X-TREME GPS TEAM Cache #11 Gorgeous seacoast spot: THE CURIOUS (GEORGE) CACHE A Victoria landmark and good touristy shopping spot: Itty bitty offset Travelbug Travel Agency Enjoy your trip! +tirediron Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 This one Frisbee golfers might be a little far, but it's close to Fort Rodd Hill, and this one is close, and a very scenic walk through the grounds of Royal Roads University. Enjoy! Quote
+brodiebunch Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 We were in Victoria 2/11-2/13 (having great time until I received a phone call stating new job offer was rescinded because company is "taking a different direction" and won't need position I was offered) and found nine caches. There are a string of them along Dallas Road that have great views, etc. We also found some in the various neighborhood deeper in the city and along the gorge/inlet (in Esquimalt or Saanich?). They were all family/kid friendly in difficult/terrain. The last time I had been in Victoria, I took the Princess Marguerite (anyone old enough to remember the song?) from Seattle. That was nearly 20 years ago. Have fun!!!! Brodiebunch Quote
+_canadianbacon_ Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 I enjoyed a series of caches along the beach around Oak Bay. Ending at: PHANTOM 409 CACHE with these along the way (not particular order) on the walk to the above cache: X-TREME GPS TEAM Cache #3 X-TREME GPS TEAM Cache #4 I may have missed some, or confused them, but there was 2 or 3 caches from the stairs going down to the beach, to Phantom 409. There are plenty more very close by if in the area: Map of Area Heck, there are plenty anywhere in Victoria.. You'll trip over them! Quote

+WeightMan Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 But how many remember the name of the other boat that was the sister to the Princess Marguerite. That was back when two of the princesses did the run between Seattle and Victoria. Quote

+WeightMan Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 As a hint the name was alliterative. Quote
+WeightMan Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 You have to be at least 50 to be able to get that one. It may even be older than that. The boat was the Princess Patricia. If it was not a sister ship to the Princess Marguerite, it was close. As I recall (and I was young then so who knows) the Princess Pat ran between Seattle and Victoria and the Princess Marguerite ran a triangular route with Vancouver as well as Victoria and Seattle. I am failrly sure I remember that if you took the Princess Marguerite you would spend the night away, but you could go to Victoria and back in the same day on the Princess Pat. Quote
+robinego Posted February 17, 2005 Author Posted February 17, 2005 Well I've printed about a trees worth of cache pages (I've yet to figure out how to d/l them directly to my GPS or do paperless...a topic perhaps at a WSGA meeting?). If all goes according to plan, I'll get my 500 over there, but I'll be with the geo-ignorant family members so it's doubtful. Thanks to all who've made suggestions. Robinego Quote

Looks like the weather is going to be superb up this way for the weekend, so enjoy the beautiful city and try to get out for an evening stroll -- the lights on the government buildings are something to see. We took the Princess Marguerite to Victiory for our 6th grade class trip back in 1975. The ship went up and back on the same day but don't remember stopping in Vancouver but who knows maybe we did and was just too uninterested to know it. I do remember that the Princess Marguerite did have state rooms, maybe people rode down from Victoria and spent the night in Seattle??. FYI: I also remember that on the way up we spent most of the trip playing this brand new video game called PONG. Quote

By the time you went to Victoria on the Princess Marguerite the Princess Patricia had been retired. Quote

I was just 8 at the time. We left bright and early and spent the night in Victoria. But the old ship took you back the same day if you wished. I believe it was about a 530 take off time from V. Anyway, we went back the next evening and got caught in a very severe cross-hatch situation where the strait meets the Sound proper. We were eating dinner and the old ship started to rolll back and forth...causing our plates to slide. Kind of fun! Went on her couple more times. Quote

+WeightMan Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Now that we have completely highjacked this thread, I just noticed the new name LR. Congrats on getting rid of the II. To try to get this back on topic, I hope you have a great caching time in Victoria on your trip Robinego. Quote
+robinego Posted February 22, 2005 Author Posted February 22, 2005 Well, the weather couldn't have been better...got a bit of a sun burn which I will happily flaunt at work. What a great place, one I would love to go to ALONE or with other cachers who will not b*tch and moan every time you get a "certain glint" in your eye. Out of 45 I pulled up, I only managed a pitiful 12!! I did get firsties on the Coho & the Black Cat though and was able to launch my new sig item so it wasn't a complete downer. All in all, what a wonderful place. One that demands a return visit whether to cache, site see or just to enjoy the extremely nice people we met. I ought to close the thread since I've returned, but will leave it open for a day or two. -R- Quote
