+Crusso
I just saw that the new version of Mapsource (6.5) has a section to insert a link associated with a waypoint (click "more details" from the new waypoint box). I tried to insert the link for a cache page and when I click on it I get "The link .......... could not be opened" Anyone know what I am doing wrong? I thought I may have copied it or pasted it wrong but when I copy the link FROM the Mapsource box and then paste it TO IE it does go to the cache page. It just doesn't work when I click on the goto arrow. This feature would be a great help in the field on my laptop if I could link directly to the cache page. This is all the Help(less) file says: Link – This feature allows you to include a link to a file or URL containing information related to the waypoint. For example, you could link to an electronic document containing a description of your waypoint, a digital photo you took while at the waypoint, a web site devoted to the area around the waypoint, etc. You can enter the desired file name/URL or click Browse to select the desired file. Click the Open Link button to activate the link. Edited February 10, 2005 by Crusso Quote Link to comment
+Team DEMP
It works for me. I entered both http://www.yahoo.com and www.yahoo.com as the URL and it launched my browser and opened the Yahoo home page. I then went to a cache page, grabbed the URL and put it in there and it worked ok. If you click on Start / Run and paste the URL in the Run box, does it launch your browser and open the page? If not, then it's likely the association of http that needs to be checked on your machine. Quote Link to comment
+Latitude 26
Mine works just fine also. Did you check your browser's security settings? Mine gave me a warning initially about the site, so I placed GC.com into the allowed site list. JB Quote Link to comment

+Team DEMP
Tried cutting/pasting. It will not launch my browser. Any suggestions? Did you try the test I posted above via the Start / Run? Is that what your reply was referencing? Quote Link to comment
+OccidentalErrant
I was thinking more along the lines of the laptop not being able to open the file type?? I know that on my regular desktop puter.. I have created links to sites but couldn't open them because the puter wouldn't open the file type... If that helps ya.. but then I might or might not know what I am talking about since I am not there to see what's inside your laptop.. Quote Link to comment
Neo_Geo
I get the same error... when I put an improperly formatted address in the box. For "www" addresses, you can just put in the "www.whatever.com" address and it should work. You can also include the "http://",'>http://", but it's not necessary. For addresses that have a fully qualified domain name server (Groundspeak is one), then you have to include the "http://" with the full address. Correct: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=90726 Incorrect: forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=90726 http://Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=90726 Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=90726 www.forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=90726 http://www.forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index...showtopic=90726 If you copy what's in your MapSource waypoint link and paste it into the address field of your browser, and your browser gives an error, then it's your address formatting. If you copy what's in your MapSource waypoint link and paste it into the address field of your browser, and your browser goes to the desired Web page, then you've got a problem. I would start with trying re-installing the MapSource upgrade. Hope this helps... Edited February 12, 2005 by Neo_Geo Quote Link to comment
+Crusso
Did you try the test I posted above via the Start / Run? Is that what your reply was referencing? Yup... see below If you copy what's in your MapSource waypoint link and paste it into the address field of your browser, and your browser gives an error, then it's your address formatting. -MY browser opens to the page when I paste what's in mapsource. If you copy what's in your MapSource waypoint link and paste it into the address field of your browser, and your browser goes to the desired Web page, then you've got a problem. I would start with trying re-installing the MapSource upgrade. This is exactly my problem. Address is typed correctly and opens when I paste it. MapSource seems to have a problem opening my browser. +RocketMan
I just saw that the new version of Mapsource (6.5) has a section to insert a link associated with a waypoint (click "more details" from the new waypoint box). This is a nice feature that I hadn't noticed before. When I open a GPX file from Mapsource, it automatically puts the cache page URL’s in the link boxes. BTW: On my waypoint properties screen, the link box is at the bottom. There is no need to click on a "more details" button. Quote Link to comment

+Crusso
When I paste it into the actual "Start/Run" box I get an error box that says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." I went to the Folder Options control panel. There are several tabs. They are labeled "General, View, File Types & Offline Files". I assume it has something to do with "File Types". What do I do now? Edited February 17, 2005 by Crusso Quote Link to comment

What do I do now? goto control panel>folder option and select the FILE TYPES tab. scroll down to HTM and HTML, selct one of them and below it will show you what it will open with. If there is nothing there select CHANGE and find the browser you like to use - IE6, firefox, etc. Hopefully that will fix it. If you scroll down more there is URL and I have that set to Shell Doc Object and Cotnrol Library No idea what that is Let us know if the above works. +Crusso
I did the above. Both file types are already associated with Internet Explorer which is the browser I use. Any other ideas? Quote Link to comment

+Crusso
Wooo Hoooo!!!! I fixed it!!! YAY! (I know, small victory.... but sometimes you take the little ones!) Turns out (after clicking rather randomlly I think) I went to "Control Panel" - "Internet Options" - "programs" tab Then click on 'Reset Web Settings' button Seems like AOL had changed some settings that had to be restored to Internet Explorer after I dumped AOL. Posting this for reference for anyone else and I appreciate all the help above. Helped set me on the right track. Quote Link to comment
