Goldie Locks
I am planning on getting the little yellow e-trex this week. Well I am going to have to get it on the way. Therefore I was wondering if I can just write down the WGS-84 format? I sure hope so because the NAD27 / UTM conversion charts are rather confusing. ==PLEASE get back to this ASAP== Thanks! +Markwell
I'm a little confused as to what you're asking. Can you just write down the coordinates for a cache and enter them into the etrex? Yes. I'd suggest printing off a few cache pages. Enter the coordinates and then use the "goto" feature. Markwell Chicago Geocachers Quote Link to comment
Goldie Locks
Ok, let me explain... at the top of every cache page it has for example N 36° 01.099 W 083° 42.741 (WGS-84) convert to NAD27 or UTM are you sure I do not have to convert for that model? That is my question. Understand now? Quote Link to comment
+Dawgies
No conversion needed for the eTrex. ~Honest Value Never Fails~ Quote Link to comment

+brdad
As long as that format is selected in the setup you can enter it. I don't remember what the default setting was but the Etrex is capable... Quote Link to comment
+culpc
I think that the eTrex defaults to the WGS-84, but it has been too long since I looked at one! Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son! Quote Link to comment
+snarfblat
So you can hand-enter coords into the eTrex? How about the Vista? I'd love to be able to do that, but I don't have a clue how. Instead, I've been carefully finding the coords in Mapsource, creating a waypoint, and then saving them to the Vista. Rob Quote Link to comment
Pubo
She shouldn't have to make any changes. I never have with any of the eTrex units I've owned. Goldie - if you don't have access to a data cable, check the prices on eBay and other lists. I've seen them for as low as $15, it's something worth having if you're going to find many caches. (Plus it allows you to do cool things with the tracklogs) It's not manditory so don't feel pressured. Quote Link to comment

Rob On my Vista I do the following -- Go to "Main menu" Select "mark" use joystick button to go up to "location" press joystick button enter coordinates change waypoint name if you choose to in the same manner. +Alan2
If you hold the Vista's joy stick down while on the navigation or map page for a couple of seconds, the waypoint will also mark. No need to go the the main menu. Then edit the coordinates section to what you want. Alan Quote Link to comment
+Borgt
Thanks for the tip Alan! I tried that on my Legend and it works nicely. That'll be a timesaver for sure. I would love to see a thread or a link with some other hints and tricks for the various GPS units out there. Quote Link to comment
+15Tango
There is a forum that is specific to GPS units and software--somewhere below General and above Geocaching by region. 15T www.1800goguard.com Quote Link to comment

Not sure if you got your GPSr new or used, but my eTrex noted both methods of entering coordinates in the manual. The "GPS units and Software" message board is a good place to check out also.
