Lewis And Clark Markers

I have tried to keep an informal list of the Lewis & Clark markers with some details about them. Now that several NGS people are actively reading these forums, I wonder if anyone can provide more detail? I should point out that although I list lat/long, in some cases it is _very_ approximate. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I dont think that there are that many. I am pretty sure that the NGS commemorative marks are only getting set at a few of these events.

NGS has a specific Lewis and Clark webpage.

I am pretty sure we are only setting marks at the "signature events". Let me check with the Mayor. He runs the L&C program.

Rogbarn -

I have recovered Lewis and Clark commemoratives 1 - 4 and 6 - 11 that you listed (that is, I have not recovered the "Western Governor's Association Meeting" disk.) There is another L&C disk that you did not list - it is a small (four-inch) L&C commemorative at the George Rogers Clark Homesite at approx. N38-17.245 W085-46.614. See HZ1633 for a photo.

Here are additional handheld coordinates:

I can't find any info on the Jefferson City, MO, disk.

Here is an excerpt from NGS's instructions for setting of the L&C II monuments:

Given the unique nature of this project, NGS will provide the special 12” brass commemorative mark for each of the 15 designated Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Signature Event sites and a 4” bronze commemorative survey mark for other Lewis and Clark historical sites. Other size Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery II official logo commemorative disks, such as 6”, 8”, 10” or 12” disks and the 3.5” paperweight, can be purchased through Berntsen International www.berntsen.com (1-800-356-7388) at the discretion of the setting Association/Society. The costs of the survey marks, other than the 4” or 12” survey markers supplied by NGS, will be the responsibility of the State Survey Association/Society.

Seventhings is correct, that we have recently set a 6" disk near Lolo, Montana at Travelers Rest State Park. The weather changed before we were able to run the GPS observations on our disk. I don't even have handheld coords for the disk at this point, but we hope to blue book the monument in the spring and dedicate it sometime this summer.

I know that a 4" disk was placed, observed and dedicated in Culbertson, Montana. They are also looking at placing another 4" disk at a location in North Dakota which was near the first encounter with a Grizzly Bear.

The signature disk for Great Falls/Ft. Benton has been monumented in Great Falls near Giant Hot Springs. That chapter of surveyors did a very nice job in the placement of the monument in a half ton boulder.

So as you can see there will only be 15 on the signature 12" disks placed around the country, but as many additional smaller disks as there are organizations willing to take the time and money to set them.

You guys have a lot of traveling to do to get to all of the disks. I visited the Monticello monument shortly after it was monumented in early 2003, at that time Dave Doyle had recently helped out with the placement and observation of that monument. Even with Dave working on that monument, it has been two years since they placed it and it still has not been included in the NGS data base. Dave if you read this, when are you going to get that one in?

This should be an exciting year following the expedition across the west.

How do you find the PID's for the set disc's?

Finding (or, searching for) PIDs for set Lewis and Clark disks:

Knowing the approximate location (using handheld coordinates or any description provided like "at Waterfront Park in Louisville" from the NGS L&C site), I run a radial search on the NGS site and look for any distinctive PIDs on the resulting list. If I don't have the coordinates, I find the approximate location using MapSource software (add-on for Garmins) and get the lat/long (MapSource gives you the coordinates of your cursor position) for the radial search.

I just looked up the datasheets for the L&C markers in Missouri. I caught a county error on the one in St. Louis. It is listed in Cole County instead of City of St. Louis. If you look in the county file provided under "Get Misc Files" section of the yearly archives, Cole County is mo051.dat and the City of St Louis is mo510.dat. It looks like a typo during data entry. The problem with these county errors is that they do not appear in the correct county file which is a common way of downloading datasheets. I'll email Cheryl. I wonder if she feels her ears burning from all this mention of her name recently.

CallawayMT - thanks for the additional info. Maybe someday, I'll get to visit them all! You mention 15 signature disks. At the NGS website about the events here, there are 15 events listed, but there were two disks placed at the Falls of the Ohio, one in Louisville, KY and one in Clarksville, IN. This makes 16 all together. Or am I missing something?

You are quite right Rogbarn, I was just repeating what NGS was stating. Maybe they are using the same monument in St. Louis on the return trip.

I am amazed at the coordinates,3 of them,St. Louis,St. Charles and Washington Mo. were within 10' of my handhelds readings.

2'-8' on the altitudes.

They were low and to the left.

So as taught aim high and to the right.

I also have used this tactic in competition,it works well with Garmin.

The one at Independence,or 4th of July Creek,Nebraska is the last one I got.

I am going for some of the others to the west this summer and try to catch them before return.

I did not find it yet but there is suppose to be one next to the Flagpole at the Park Downtown Kansas City.

It's a goal and I don't know how far I will get on the journey but if I can get from Nebraska to Idaho I have been to the Oregon Coast at the Tree they Carved on.

20+ years ago it was still there with a plaque,I want to go back and see if it is still there.

I went to this 4" monument a couple weeks ago:

LC CORPS II LOCUST GROVE

This mark is located at Locust Grove, a historic site in Louisville, KY. This is the cabin site where Clark's sister lived and George Rogers Clark lived until his death. It is also near Zachary Taylor's home and burial site.

Another 4" Monument is located at:

This mark is located in Culbertson, MT and was dedicated last fall.

The 12" Centennial site at Great Falls, MT will be dedicated on June 25th at 10:00 in the morning. I gave a description of that one earlier.

I will be doing the GPS observation on Travelers Rest, MT; a 6" monument this weekend. 9 hours on Saturday and 4.5 hours on Sunday. We have not picked a date for our dedication as of this time.

No, Seven's 4" disk is on the Indiana side of the Ohio. I actually went to all four of the L&C disks in the Louisville-Clarksville area. There are two - twelve inch marks and two - four inch marks.

There was quite a bit of history in that area, I really enjoyed going through there and seeing everything.

I had seen an article about the monument at Locust Grove and then told seventhings about it, he asked me to stop and see it for him; so I added it to my list of marks for that day.

I have a large list of items to get listed, but have not had the time since my return from the midwest; and next week I am heading down to Utah and Colorado for 10 days. So I guess my list will be growing.

The parking area is located on the North side of and approximately 500’ from Lolo Creek; the park facilities are located on the South side of Lolo Creek. There will soon be a bridge and trail constructed which will connect the parking area with the facilities across the creek. The disk is flush with and inside a 1’ diameter concrete cylinder, which is raised approximately 0.1’ above the surrounding soil surface. It is located 2.9’ south of the back of sidewalk, 22.3’ southeast of the centerline of the concrete path between 2 handicap parking signs and 9’ southeast of the most easterly handicap parking sign.

To reach: From the Missoula County Courthouse; travel southeast on Broadway Ave. for one block, take a right onto Higgins Ave. travel south for 0.5 miles, take a right onto Brooks St. (U.S. Hwy 93); continue on U.S. Hwy 93 (Brooks St.) for approximately 10.5 miles to Lolo, MT continue south through town to the junction with U.S. Hwy 12, take a right on U.S. Hwy 12, travel west 0.35 miles to the entrance of Travelers Rest State Park. There are no informational signs at this time, as the park has not officially opened on the north side of Lolo Creek at this time. The entrance is approximately 250’ west of Guy’s Lolo Creek Steakhouse and directly across from the Holt Heritage Museum and has a green steel double gate at the entrance. From this point travel south on the access road for approximately 1400’ and then turn left into a parking area with a landscaped island with handicap parking on the north side of the island. The monument is located on this island in front of the handicap parking.

Comments: “Travelers’ Rest State Park marks the location of a centuries-old Native American campsite which Lewis and Clark's used in 1805 and 1806. They called the nearby creek "Travellers Rest." In Summer 2002, archeologists found evidence of the Corps of Discovery's latrine and central fire, positioning the Park as one of the the few sites in the nation with physical confirmation of the group's visit--a truly unique designation.” Taken from http://www.travelersrest.org/ . Accessible benchmarks in the area are: RY0734, RY0089, RY0732 and RY0048; the preceding survey marks are located within one mile of the Travelers’ Rest.

I seen were a few BM'ers have been but not too many yet.

Looks like a great little run for this year.

We will have to get the last 1/4 next year.

With this trip we will have completed 3/4 of the trail.

There are no roads that lead out to that point. Did you park along Fairfax Trafficway and hike over the RR tracks?

I was down there a month or so ago. Just one day too late to catch the L&C keelboat return. It is a short distance off Fairfax Trafficway. It was my first time there and I just followed the signs through the industrial district and past the warehouses. There is a boat ramp there and a nice city park and historical site. If you get close the signs should lead you the the area with little trouble. The biggest problem right now is that by the end of the month 2 of the interstate bridges across the river will be closed and traffic could be really bad during rush hour.

Can you provide any addition to-reach instructions?

From Fairfax Tfwy. Head east at the south end of the KCK Public Levee buildings. At the east side of the parking lot turn south along the earthen levee, eventually bearing to the southwest. The levee will transition to a concrete floodwall. Pass through the floodwall opening [ignore the no trespassing sign, this is a park] into the large parking lot on the river side of the floodwall. Turn back to the northeast. The L&C pavilion is visible from the parking lot, and the disk is west of the pavilion. There are several signs along the way to assist.

Thanks for the updated go to.

I was just there looking for the Kansas City one and that one too.

There was nothing found at KC.

I did find a lot of KA KA at KAW point on the East side of the river.

I gave up with no coordinates or a go to.

I did find that the Marks are a part of the HARN Network.

I had heard they were Hi accuracy but did not know they were part of the HARN network till I found the Plaques and duh put it together.

There are Actually 6 disc at Council Bluffs.

Here are 5.

I did find THAT sign.

But no snakes.

Was not fast enough to get a picture of the White woolf we encountered or the Grizzly bear.

But Old Faithful was Faithful.

It was 95* when we left we got there it was snowing and about 32* aaahhhhhhhhhhh

The Clark on the Yellowstone Signature Event, July 22-25, 2006 enables modern day explorers to rediscover Captain William Clark's travels along the Yellowstone River. This event commemorates the 200th anniversary of Clark inscribing his name on Pompeys Pillar, the only remaining physical evidence of the Lewis & Clark expedition appearing on the trail as it did 200 years ago. Clark, showing his affection for Sacagawea's young son, whom he called "Pomp", named this sandstone pillar at the river's edge in his honor. A National Day of Honor commemorating this event, and recognizing the historic use of the Pillar by American Indians is set for July 25, 2006. A new interpretive center will greet visitors at the recently created Pompeys Pillar National Monument, administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Canoe landings, trail rides, wildlife displays and exhibits at local museums in nearby Billings, Montana will engage people of all ages

I made it to Kaw Point, KS, over the weekend. The area has changed a bit since I was there almost 5 years ago.

Traveling westbound on I-70, you can see the park to the north and below you.

Lots of signs to lead you there. The pavillion has lots of good Lewis and Clark info as well. The disk is located in the grass on the west side of the cemented area of the pavillion.

My handheld GPS showed N39 06 59.9 W094 36 38.7 +/- 7 feet

This PID isn't a Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery disk, but does have relevance to the expedition:

QS0705 SAKAKAWEA MONUMENT

which is a monument to the guide of the Lewis and Clarke expedition. It was placed in 1945. It's near Mobridge, South Dakota, on the Standing Rock Reservation. It's near the grave of Chief Sitting Bull, according to the datasheet.

Here is a very impotant part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

The only one to die on the Journey.

There are some others notable of listing but I am keeping those secret till I get to them.

I will also finish the Trail in 2 years as they did.

The events will be heading back East soon. Here is a new disk to add to the list.

Camp Fortunate, Clark Canyon Reservoir, Montana.

I do not know if there are any dedication ceremonies planned for this monument. There have

been no survey measurements at this time, and thus no NGS designation.

GPS handheld coordinates (NAD83):

Lat: N44 59 27.18, 44 59.453

Long: W112 52 13.20, 112 52.220

Elevation: 5680 feet

Description: The 4-inch Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery II Brass Monument can be found

in a rough concrete cylinder approximately 1 foot in diameter, with a Sacajawea Dollar imbedded

in the concrete 3 inches south. There is a Stone information kiosk approximately 9 feet southeast

from the Corps Disk. The location overlooks the Clark Canyon Reservoir in a very dry and rocky

area.

To Reach: From Exit 62 at Dillon, Montana; travel Southwest along Interstate 15 for 19.3 miles

to the Clark Canyon Reservoir Exit 44. Exit to the right and cross over the Clark Canyon

Reservoir spillway and travel along the Horse Prairie Highway number 324 southwesterly for

approximately 1.1 miles to the Camp Fortunate Overlook Recreation Area. Exit the highway to

the left and take the right fork in the recreation area approximately 420 ft. from the entrance;

continue along the recreation area road for approximately 0.27 miles to a parking area on the

right. From the parking area take the gravel hiking path for approximately 650 feet up to the

Camp Fortunate Overlook and picnic pavilion. From the handicap parking area at the end of the

trail, travel 60 feet east along a concrete sidewalk and then travel 15 feet south toward a stone

overlook wall.

Comments: This monument was placed near this position for its importance in the journeys of

the Corps of Discovery. This is the location where the Corps camped in August of 1805 and

where they were able to cache their canoes and obtain horses from the Shoshone indians to

continue their journey over the Rocky Mountains. This site is administered by the Bureau of

Reclamation. Be sure to go to the lower overlook and informational area down at the left fork

shortly after leaving the highway, this has some excellent informational signs and views.

The closest bench marks are “T” PID: QY0106, a pipe cap on a 3 ½" pipe; which can be found in

a small picnic area below the dam spillway. Another close bench mark is “METLEN” PID:

Yeah Will,

It is closed or I would have gotten up to that one also. This one I found about at a conference the day before and spent a couple hours wandering around looking for. I even had footprints in the snow right on top of the disk. It was just barely visible, but I did not have good enough directions to know exactly where it was located.

I have photos of the 12" disk for Pompey's Pillar, I had to use somebody else's camera and so I will upload them when I get them. The disk was at the conference and was being delivered for its' installation soon. The location has been determined and it will be getting placed this spring.

I will be finding out about the location for a few other 4" monuments which were placed in Idaho and hopefully go them or at least divulge their locations.

If Buckbrooke wants any more information from the Camp Fortunate setting, then he can get in touch with me and I will get them to him.

I just noticed this thread and I like it alot. I live about 45 min. from Clarksville/Louisville and would like to find the markers there. I think these markers are really neat! I enjoy finding benchmarks while I'm geocaching. I usually find mine at firetowers in the national forest all around my house, or at dams to the many lakes in the area. I think it would be neat to follow the expidition west using these markers. Thaks everyone for all the neat info!

HELP!!!

does anyone have an idea what is going on with the Lewiston/Lapwai signature event dedication of the 12" disk?

I have gone to the events, looked through all the schedules I could get my hands on, talked to lots of people in the park service and the USGS with NO results not one person knows anything about a Benchmark being placed in this area :blink: have they just forgotten us here? :blink:

The signature disk has been set at the new BLM visitor's center at Pompey's Pillar, approximately 30 miles east of Billings on I-94. The event is scheduled for July 25 I believe, but do some checking if you plan on being there for the disk dedication.

The Tent of Many Voices is in Missoula and Lolo until July 9 and I took in "The Surly Surveyor" program and really enjoyed the show. The person who talked about the GLO and the dividing of land across the PLSS states did a very good job. If you get to any of the remaining events, be sure to see his talk.

I have photos of the Billings Disk before it was set in concrete.

The end is near, be sure to get out and see the activities.

The Idaho surveyors have been lacking in participation, I know that they have set various monuments around the state, but even the NGS state advisor has not been able to get their locations to me. The groups have not gotten their bluebook information to him and so he has not been able to locate them. I have been in touch with him to find these disks so that I could stop and see them while I am in Idaho on business. I have had no luck finding any information and any disks.
