Almost There! Another "how To?"

With all your help out there. We finally got our cache page made up. But we're having problems with background and/or graphics. A reply in our last post, it was mentioned that we had to have our pictures (we assume graphics also) hosted on some other web sites. Can someone explain this a little more? How? Where? And Why?

A cache page for a cache you are hiding? You can click the "upload pictures" button at the top right of the page and upload all your page's graphics. Once they're there, (The links to the pictures will appear at the end of your cache description) you can get the URL of each pic and insert that into your description using the <img src="your picture's URL"> tag.

You need to have the image online somewhere so you can tell the system where to find the image and how to display it. How would it display an image from off your harddrive?

 

Then just use the html, Bon's page might help.

When you do upload a picture to the cache page, open the picture, highlight it with your mouse and "right click" it. By selecting the properties, you get the correct html link for the picture.

I noticed that a few of the pages have images as the background of the page.

 

I can insert images into the page I'm creating by using HTML in the description area, but I also have an image that I'd like to place as the background of the page.

 

How's that done??

LIGHTBULB!!!

 

I went to a page that had the background image and "view source"d the page coding and figured it out!!

 

You have to insert the code:

<*body background="http*://www.your-pic-host-site.com/your-image.jpg">

into the short description line of the cache description page.

 

Remove the * from the HTML coding above to make it work.

 

I wasn't sure it the page here would try to read it, so I stuck those in there to cancel out the working code)

Edit: I think that's what SeabeckTribe is wanting to know, and also so do I.

and align=left / right / center etc is how you get a image. I would assume you can also resize it with html.

 

for backgrounds you can also add BGPROPERTIES="fixed', so the background will stay in place and your page will 'slid' over it it, instead of the background moving with it. Both of these are on Bon's page, see my previous post.

 

But I do want to warn you, please use the frills sparingly. Adding a bunch of junk can makes it very annoying for people on slow connections, and sometimes pics/etc don't translate well to PDAs.

As Welch pointed out, don't get carried away with with the design. Most cachers want first of all good coordinates, good hints, that is print friendly, in a interesting location on public land or with permission. BTW, unless they have changed their view the Ranger at Scenic Beach does not like geocaches. I think if approached in the proper manner and ask for permission. He might grant it. Most of the cachers around here will not pay the $5 parking fee just to find a cache. Today (60°) would have been a good day to have looked for your cache. I just took a look at the caches you have found and I like the look of all of them except the one that had the distracting background. The owner of that cache is very clever in his designs and that is his option to express himself. However I find it very distracting. The others that you found are straightforward that are PDA friendly and also print friendly. They do what they are supposed to in a nice simple layout. Having said all that you as the owner may enjoy designing a cache page with more WOW. Dick, W7WT

As a dial-up only user I find it very difficult to open some of these pages with to much graphics. I also have a PDA and recently was unable to open a pocket querie (using GPX view) for the LA area because of some of special features imbedded in some of the cache pages. I would prefer a limited amount of graphics and a cache page with better information.

That's the one. The owner has done a lot for geocaching with over 90 caches hid. I didn't want to point it out. He is very clever and enjoys making great backgrounds etc. They don't work out to well for me as on my printer they require too many pages to get all the information. They are useless on my PDA and the coordinates at the top of the page that appear on my PQs are not for the cache. But, I guess that is my problem. He can make the hide and the cache pages anyway he wants to. I usually get around to looking for them. Dick, W7WT

Well, you all have made our day once again. With your help and guidance we have done it. Page is up and looking good, even if we do say! Just waiting on the reviewer. We hope that the graphics are not a problem. We have found that if you click on "Make this page printer friendly" We have no problem printing it. It doesn't include the background border and the logs. Not having the logs and forgetting to put down some good hints on the back side. Has made us come back and look. Then go DAAA! Those logs are helpful. But to save paper, we just print out the critical info. We check the pre-print and make sure we print only the pages we need. But we are probably taking hot air. You all probably know all this. And yes we dismissed the State Park because of the parking fee. But we have got our eye on a great site and ready to try a second cache. We are excited to see what you all think. Please let us know the bad spots where we can improve. THANKS AGAIN. Happy Caching

Miami Beach:Land of Misery GCMJ5Y

 

This is the first cache the SeabeckTribe has placed. It is now active. If the coordinates turn out to be as good as the rest of the cache page, they have really done well. Seabeck is a beautiful place on the East side of Hood Canal. Just across the water is the Olympic Mountains. It is a little out of the way but no matter where you put the cache it will be in a senic location. So often in the forums we never know the outcome of someone asking advice. Those contributing and viewing the posts, take a look at what they have done. I am not into FTF but maybe after my Doctor's appointment I will drive over to Seabeck and look for this cache. I think they have raised the quality of the caches here in Kitsap County. Thanks, Dick, W7WT
