+BadAndy
They were some kind of special cache back in the olden days. One of the forty niners will be here shortly with war stories about them. Quote Link to comment
Jeremy
They were placed by a fringe government organization with a wacky idea that there was an alternate evolution of man. They were banned by the Men in Black Quote Link to comment

+sept1c_tank
Interestingly, although originally, they were owned by MGM or something, they still exist for your pleasure. You can log one here. It is my understanding, they were an early promotion concieved by Groundspeak with prizes provided by the movie company, something like the recent Jeep contest. Quote Link to comment
Jeremy
They were converted back to Project APE caches for historical purposes. For a while there we had converted them to traditional caches after the promotion. Quote Link to comment
Mushtang
... all of them have been arhived!! You just scared me. I'm planning a trip to D.C. in mid February and I plan on getting the MD APE cache on that trip. I've been looking forward to logging one of these for a long time so I'm glad that the last three remaining APE caches are still available. At least the one I'm going to try and log is. +Fergus
I found the crab creek ape cache on the day it went active. I was not the first there. When my friend Seamus and I got there there were several geocachers around the cache. Before we left more geocacher had shown up. Quote Link to comment
+DiskDevil
Would it be possible to replace and adopt one of the APE Caches? I think it was a litttle ahead of it's time. I have heard that many people would like to seek some of the retired ones if they were re-instated. It would be cool to have one in every state, another thing to be obsessed with! +Markwell
I once asked "What makes a Project APE cache still a Project APE" and Jeremy responded: I would assume that the container makes the Project APE cache, along with the neat spraypaint job on the lid, and perhaps the logbook (if it still exists). Though the container should be sufficient. In our office we have one of the original (unhidden) containers along with one of the logbooks. They containers are truly unique and stamped with the Project APE logo. If you've every found one (or placed one) you know that you'll most likely never see another container like it. Originally, there were only 13 caches world-wide (re-read the page I linked above). Many of them have been archived due to muggling or just not the best placement in the world. I think it's like a Rembrant painting (not presuming to compare with quality). Since there are a limited number of these available, and no more are being created, that makes the capturing of one all the more special. If any old Joe or Jane cacher could place an APE cache, they wouldn't be as special anymore. Edited January 13, 2005 by Markwell Quote Link to comment

I think that ONLY ONE in each state would be nice. Sort of like the Holy Grail of caches( no disrespect intended). The few that are left are truly Rembrants. Let the approvers in each state(area) hide one. Just a thought... Quote Link to comment
MooseMaMa
2Wheel'in and I hunted and found Mission 7, Crab Creek yesterday - that is one of three remaining Project APE caches. I believe the other two are Mission 9, Tunnel of Light in Washington, and Mission 12, Blind Canal in Illinois. Truly unique containers and log books, and a nifty bit of geocaching history. +BilboB
This is great new to me! I only knew of the one in Washington which I will visit this fall. What to my surprise when I found that there are still 2 more still active!! The Maryland one is on my list for the summer and the Illinois one is on my list for next month when I get out to Chicago. +Seth!
I created a mirror of the original site after Fox took down the official Project Ape web site. Incidentally, it was through Project Ape that I learned about geocaching. Quote Link to comment
+erik88l-r
I created a mirror of the original site after Fox took down the official Project Ape web site. Thanks Seth! That really brings back some memories of racing to find the one placed in the Atlanta area. I think I was 5th to find, got a nifty Planet of the Apes trading card. ~erik~ Quote Link to comment
+Baxter-MD
I just go back from the one in Maryland and it was worth the trip. The original log book is still being used. There is also another challenging cache in the same park. Quote Link to comment
