+Chris and Family Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 I have four kids and we are discovering the Geocaching. They are all six years old and as soon as we discover a cache, they all want to trade. Usually two items can be changed, but I think in our special situation, it is okay to trade four items (four out and four in). What do you think ? Greetings Christoph Quote
Team Misguided Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 The guideline is trade even or trade up. If you are trading four item for four new items, that sounds fair to me. ___________________________________________________________ Don't mind us, we're just looking for tupperware in this bush. Quote
FISUR Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 My team includes 3 children, and occasionally we take 3 and leave 3 items. As long as you trade even or trade up, there should be no problem. If you follow that suggestion, there shouldn't be any complaints. (And if you ever get a complaint, tell them to contact FISUR. ) Good luck. It sounds like you have your hands full. +GeoDucksinMA Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 Hi Christoph, I don't see why not...but then again i am a new cacher...so i don't know all the intricasies... in the one we found (yes as i said I am a new cacher)...we (my son and I.. and 2 friends from out of town who showed us GeoCaching) took a couple of things and left a couple of things...i.e. my son took one thing and my friends took one thing and we each put one thing back...but I have 2 kids and when my second one gets older (she is only 5 months old)...I plan on having them each trade something...we are putting them all in a curio cabinet as our "family trophy case" --GeoDucksinMA Maya, Alan (3 and 1/2) and Catey (5 months).. my son's quote about geocaching "It's a treasure hunt and it's fun!" +Don&Betty Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 I'm a believer in "take one item, leave one item," period! Let the kids duke it out some other way re. who gets to pick. Stop at an ice cream shop on the way home to reward the rest. I suppose you probably do that anyway. Some caches have somewhat valuable items in them that may all be cleaned out by the first finder--if he happens to have brought his whole Cub Scout Pack along for a lark. Are they really interested in geocaching! How do you keep them from tracking up the area and making the hiding place obvious for future finders. Even if one trades even or up, there is the problem of variety. If you do plan to take more than one item, for your multiple kids, do try to bring a variety of different types of things, as well as a variety of values. Thanks. Quote
+briansnat Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 Go ahead and trade as many items as you like, as long you leave the cache as well stocked, or richer than you found it. "Au pays des aveugles, les borgnes sont rois" Quote
+flask Posted June 23, 2003 Posted June 23, 2003 i was going to make a smarty-pants answer, but i'm just too tired to be snappy AND intelligble. trade up or even (good practice even if you only take one item) and don't take more than one of a kind. if i leave four of my signatures, i'll prefer that your family just takes one. on the other hand, if you arrive with another cacher (another user name) it may be ok with me for you both to get one. i draw the line at an entire scout pack. it doesn't matter if you get to camp at one or at six. dinner is still at six. +Perrin Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 Personally, I know that no matter what is said on the forums, people trade how they trade. I started a thread earlier about this similar topic. More I was ranting about people taking more items than they left. I think most of us accept the fact that the contents in our caches will degrade over time. As long as the traders keep the same number of items or more in my cache than I started it with, I'm pretty much settling to be ok with that. Ideally, I would like to hope that people would trade same numbers of items and trade even or up as well. As to the original question about letting all your kids trade, I would say that if its a new cache with all new stuff in it, only let 1 or a couple trade. If its an older cache with lots of obviously old trading stuff in it, let them all trade something. Signature? I don't need no stinkin signature!!!! Quote
+shunra Posted June 28, 2003 Posted June 28, 2003 Part of our family experience is that the preparation of the items (and their packaging in Ziplock bags) is an essential part og the game. Each of my two kids individually abides by the trade even or trade up maxim, in terms of quantity as well as in quality. Quote
+Web-ling Posted June 28, 2003 Posted June 28, 2003 You've got four kids, all six years old? Sure, trade four items, as long as you leave at least four items of equal or greater value. When my kids, Miss Pumpkin (age 7) and Curly Tiger (age 4.5) cache with me, we all trade if we want to, we all sign the logbook, and we all log online (I have to help them with the online log.) Quote
