Birdsong-n-Bud
Hi, I have participated on many forums and message boards, but never have seen one that locked threads before. So this is new to me. What would consitute a reason for locking a thread, please? I've seen some locked here where I didn't really understand what resulted in the lock, and I'm sure I just don't know all the rules. Thanks. Link to comment
Kitch
At first I hated seeing the locked threads....but now.... I see that this many people can't stay on topic and many just want to troll. Heck some people enjoy getting them locked after they post. Link to comment
Birdsong-n-Bud
So going off topic is what will result in a lock? Link to comment
BalkanSabranje
No. The thread-starter or a moderator locking the thread is what causes a thread to be locked. The reasons are many. BS/2 Link to comment

carleenp
Almost every internet forum I participate has locked threads. So I have never viewed it as uncommon. On many it is done by a moderator when various posting guidelines are violated. You have been given a link to the guidelines here in a previous post. On others it is done by the topic originators when their question has been answered or the topic has gotten stale. Here, it is some of both. Link to comment

Renegade Knight
There are two other forums where I've seen locked threads. On one the thread owner might lock the thread if they get their question answered. On the other the topic was about using turds as a cache find. This site is a leader by a wide margin on the various reasons for which a thread will get locked. Blatant trolling is the only consistent reason. The rest varies. Recently this site created a new policy that any topic which they have closed is not something we can discuss anymore. It's inane but it's more work for them since they can't reasonable expect all the members to track the verboten topics. Especially when a lot of them are legit.
