Coming Back Up North!

It doesn't affect the planned trip, but be aware there is proposed develoment at the Serria Ct TH. We say the sign a couple of weeks ago when we did the Lookout cache.

Just for info: The Serria Ct trail is fairly steep until the juction with the C5 (near the words 'Issaquah Junction' on Jon's map). From there to a way past Tie Mill it's flat. Everywhere else you're going downhill (only some of them are in the wrong direction :D ).

Cough Cough

Boy I think I feel a bad cold coming on or maybe it's the flu, could be something even worse.

Dear Dr. Cacher,

I have been feeling quite ill lately and need to set up an appointment to see you on Thursday, January 27th.

Please inform me as to the location of your new office and a time to be there.

Dear Boss,

I will not be in today. As you know I have been feeling quite ill lately. I have set up an appointment with a group of specialist today. Given that these specialists are some of the finest in their field I am confident that they will be able to lead me down the right path to recovery so that I will be back in the office tomorrow.

Okay Moun10Bike knows of my interest so I'll join the discussion. First, check the equation used to get coordinates for Native Plant Pop Quiz; they were adjusted today. Somewhere along the line adjustments were made that didn't carry through. Thanks for the clarification lahontan. Second we have some time so let's see what the new multi looks like before establishing a starting location. I sure hope my work situation allows me to join the group.

Nothing has come through the approval queue yet from lahontan, so I think we should make plans expecting that it won't be ready in time for us. I would still vote for starting from Sierra CT SW - we start high that way and have an easy bail-out at just about any time. I would suggest heading first for Squak Mtn Lookout, then circling around and picking up the others in more-or-less counter-clockwise order.

Plus, lahontan shared with me that his multi will likely start at the Mountainside Trailhead that is just below the Sierra Ct. Trailhead, so it would be easy to adjust if it does get submitted.

Works for me. Just need a time - let's work backward....

- Kealia, what time do you want to be back at your car to go to the airport?

- Jon (or someone else), how long do think it will take us to do the 4-cache loop (with a few rest stops :sad: ) ?

I'd just as soon not have to get up tooooo early if I don't have to, not a morning person here, but I know Kealia has a plane to catch.

Going off rough estimates from my map, this is what I am envisioning as the route along with associated mileage:

LEG                                                                     LEG DISTANCE/TOTAL DISTANCE
===                                                                     ===========================
Sierra Ct. -> N1             -> Perimeter Loop -> GCHQC2                   1.4 miles/1.4 miles
GCHQC2     -> Perimeter Loop -> W3             -> C2         -> GCC3B0     0.9 miles/2.3 miles
GCC3B0     -> C2             -> C1             -> C4         -> GC4B3      1.2 miles/3.5 miles
GC4B3      -> S3             -> C5             -> GCJGMK                   0.9 miles/4.4 miles
GCJGMK     -> C5             -> N1             -> Sierra Ct.               2.0 miles/6.4 miles

Editing to add a link to the map for reference.

This route front loads most of the serious climbing. If we decide that there is just too much climbing at the start, we could make the decision to do the caches in reverse order split up some of the elevation gain.

If we expect to travel at an overall rate of 2 miles per hour, that would put us at around 3-1/4 hours. Of course, I imagine it will take us longer than that. I would say at least 4 hours and more likely at least 5.

I need to be back at the airport at 4:00 for my flight, and from what I've been through traffic-wise at off-hours from Bellevue, I'm assuming I need a solid hour to get there from where we are, right?

That being said, I have no problem with the hike as proposed by Moun10Bike - just gimmie the coords to the trailhead and/or easy directions to get there since I don't know the roads.

How does a 9:00 start to the hike sound? if it does in fact take 5 hours, that would put us done at 2:00 and give me some cushion (assuming we take breaks, pics, etc.).

FYI - I tend to hike faster when on my own (between 3-4 mph) so I won't be slowing things down - no problems if there are others who don't keep that pace.

Sounds like fun guys. chicken.gif

You can download the waypoints for the area, minus the cache locations, in your chosen format from my map page. The Sierra Ct. trailhead location is the waypoint named "SIERRA CT" and is located at N47 30.997 W122 03.477. One issue: I mapped the waypoints based on the aerial photos, and I see that the waypoint for Sierra Court is positioned a bit northwest of where the end of Sierra Ct. shows on Garmin's MapSource maps. So, if autorouting, you may get some funky results at the end.

Directions:

Take Exit 17 off of I-90 and turn south on Front Street

At 0.6 miles, turn right on W Sunset Way

Drive 1.3 miles and turn left on Mountainside Dr. SW

Turn right onto Squak Mountain Loop SW 0.7 miles later

Drive 0.3 mile and turn right onto Sierra Ct. SW. Trailhead is at end of street.

Auto-routing?? What fun is that?  :D  Usually I just drive in circles with the darn thing in the window......

Thanks!

LOL....LOL This oldtimer just follows the darn arrow and plays a hunch or two. Sometimes it's right , sometimes it's wrong. So yeah I've done my share of driving around. I rarely use the map screen, excpet for cases when water is involved. which side fo the river????

I'm still trying to decide if my cold is over and I can go on this. I may not make a decision until Thursday morning.

The forecast I saw this morning calls for cloudy all week, but no precip. Highs in the mid 50's with lows in the 40's.

What happened to a Wednesday night get together for a brew?

Edit to note that hydnseek mentioned a desire for a later start time, as do I. I am not a morning person and prefer a slow start to the day.

I vote for early like 8:00 AM. The last thing I would want is for anybody to feel pressured into a pace that is to fast for their comfort. Surely most working stiffs are functionable by 8:00 AM and for those that don't have to work.....well maybe someday I'll join your ranks. :rolleyes:

Well, I'm a working stiff and I don't normally get up till 8:00, get to work at 9:00. So I'd prefer a 9 am start, so as not to get up so much earlier than I do for work. I am also not very coherent that time of day. <_< But whatever the majority decides, I'll try to make work.

FYI - I'll be checking this later tonight for details and then won't be back online until tomorrow evening (5 - 6 PM).

I'll check then for anything about meeting for a drink on Wed night as well as the final agreed upon strating time.

My vote would also be for 8:00 so as to not feel rushed and push anybody to hike faster than they are comfortable moving.

I'm going to PM Moun10bike my cell phone in case anybody needs to reach me for last minute changes, etc.

See ya soon.

Forgot to add.....we are going for these 4 caches, correct?

Tie Mill by don & Lynda (GC4B3)

Bullitt Fireplace Cache by Too Cool & Susan too (GCC3B0)

Squak Mtn Lookout by Mierissa (GCHQC2)

Native Plant Pop Quiz by lahontan (GCJGMK) – solve puzzle beforehand!

Are there any others that folks are planning to tackle, perhaps afterward? Want to come prepared...

Ooh yippee! I can come! Thanks to my wonderful husband, I can cover the time between Thing 2 getting out of preschool and the end of the hike. So if no one minds, I'd love to come along for some caching fun! Hope the weather stays nice!

Hydnsek- you've got my cell #, and I think I have either your cell or your home #, not sure which... Just in case.

If there is time I would love to do Bus Line Stop and Osprey View. The bus just sounds so cool and since Osprey View is so close why not.

We were going to hide a cache at the bus- we hike Tradition Lake with the girls a lot and it's always been one of our favorite spots to show visitors. Such a funny site!

I did both of those at New Year's with cache ahead and masterpuzzler - they are a nice hike. There 2-3 more in that same park area you should get if you're going - one's a puzzle cache.

yup, i do. you've got my cell, if it ends -2224.

oh, some other caches in the Cougar Mtn area i haven't done, in case anyone's game:

The One Less Traveled by lahontan (GCK39Z)

SG #55 - View Point - WOW! by Pepper (GCKZK3)

SG #56 - Why Pepper? why... by Team SuperGenius (GCKZR8)

High Lakemont by UWdawg (GCE12E)

Fantasy Adventure by TeachingJohnny (GCF51D)

I think I've done all the others up there, but new ones keep popping up, so ya never know. I haven't done the new ones going up Tiger to Poo Poo Pt from the west [at least, I think that's where they are, haven't looked closely].

However, I imagine we'll all be pretty tired after Squak....perhaps a pub is a better chaser.

Okay, it looks like we have a plan: 8:00 AM at the Sierra Ct. Trailhead tomorrow morning.

Should we get a head count? I think these people have spoken up as coming or wanting to come:
