I would like to buy a Compact Flash GPS for my PDA along with mapping software that will run on PPC 2002. It will be used mostly for driving navigation. It needs to have auto-routing and also be able to import waypoints (or waypoint files).

If you have any experience please post here and include links to products and product reviews.

Mapopolis will do the job for mapping software. As for the hardware, I haven't a clue. You might take a look at GPSPassion.com, which is a site dedicated entirely to GPS and mapping software.

Thanks. I checked the Mapopolis website and was confused by their product. Does it include the CF GPS?

The specification says the GPS is "Powered from car cigarette lighter" and "Built in rechargeable battery provides memory backup and fast time to first fix". But the description says "The CF card draws from your PDA's battery so no separate charging cable or power supply is necessary."

I purchased the Globalsat BC-307 CF GPSr last year off of ebay for a very good price,It does not come with mapping software. I had DeLorme's Street Atlas and Topo software already so I just added the Pocket Street Atlas to the mix.

It works great and by using GSAK with Pocket Queries I can do arc filters etc. and just upload the way points to the PDA. GSAK will use a route developed on street atlas to create arc filters so that is a plus.

I did have to go with Ozi Explorer though for the southern hemisphere. GSAK will also create the waypoints for that and they can be transfered to the PDA.

I was referring to the Mapopolis software, which is available separately. I don't know about the GPS they sell, because I have no need of it. I use my Legend for driving directions using Mapopolis, on a Palm.

Three of my buddies and I all use the same setup on our PDA's (Dell Axims). We use mapopolis for our mapping software along with a HOLUX GM-270 CF GPS card. Holux is the main manufacturer of these cards and the one you see on the mapopolis website is the Holux 270. Companies like Mapopolis and GPSCity have Holux put their own names on the Gm-270 for them. It's the same card but just a higher price. Mapopolis offers a package deal of the software along with the card but you can save money by buying them separate. You can buy the mapopolis software for a hundred dollars and get the cf card for 90 which is 190 total. These cards are great and have survived several hard drops by me. Mapopolis has a free conversion utility that allows you take pocket query (or single) gpx files and convert them to waypoints imported into their program. You can then use the automapping (along with voice navigating ) features to drive to the caches.

We get these brand new cf cards off of Ebay for around 90 bucks. Just make sure when you buy/bid on one, that it has the optional external antenna with it. This antenna has a cable that plugs into the side of the card. You then can put the antenna on your dashboard and put your pda on your seat while driving and not lose signal.

Here is a link to an review of the Gm-270.

I have an early Dell Axim PDA, no blue tooth.

You might consider a CF GPS with dual sensitivity. Regular for auto-routing and high sensitive for use in the city with high bldgs or in the woods with foliage when you lose your regular GPS signal. Check gpspassion.com
