Waypoint Upload With Gsak

I am using GSAK to upload waypoints into my Magellan SporTrak and when I use "Smart Tags" it uploads funky chars. What setting do I need to have it upload legably(sp)? Please Help.

There are a ton of special tags. Go check out http://www.gsak.net/help/hs10300.htm at the GSAK website and that should help a lot.

There is also a GSAK help thread here http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=86237 I learned a ton by just lurking the old GSAK threads.

This program is tricky to use with all the filters and such, but once you 'get it', and it took me a while, it is unmatched.

I just use smart names. I don't want any of the codes, terrain, or anything else, just the name. YMMV.

Depending upon your definition of "funky chars" you may be running into a firmware defect in select Magellan units. I don't know if "SporTrak' is affected, but "SporTrak Map' brothers with firmware versions < 5 can put non-ascii characters in waypoint comments in certain cases.

That may be it. I will look into it. Is there a firmware upgrade for this issue? The funky chars in question are the waypoint indicators the unit uses.

For SporTrak Map, Map Pro, Map Colour (I don't know if base SporTrak is affected) firmware versions over 5.0 address corruption in the waypoint comments.

 

I don't know what you're calling "waypoint indicators" but there are only three things that come to mind as options: waypoint icon, waypoint name, and waypoint comment. Only the last is affected by the firmware problem I'm speaking of. The waypoint comments will inherit non-alphanumeric characters.

Are you sure this is really random.

 

GSAK allows you to associate icon symbols with all sorts of combinations of caches.

 

For example you can associate Found caches with a bell, not found with Mt., placed with cross hairs, ... etc.

 

Check what icons you have associated with what conditions.

Yes, it is completely random, as far as I can tell. There appears to be no reason for the icon placements in the titles.

Not quite sure what you mean by "in the titles"

With the help of Clyde we found the cure for my dilemma. Force the uppercase. With that option checked, it seemed to work. Thank you everyone for your assitance.
