Things in your Cache?

Here's a funny question. In the odd case that someone places something in your cache that you would like, is it frowned upon if the person/people who originally hide the cache go get an item and leave another for it?

Well I have done the very thing you've asked. On one ocasion, it was to pick up a signature item of a local area cacher and the other was to pick up a TB. In both cases I added other items to my cache and of course I did this by leaving a 'NOTE' on the cache page to let others know that that item has been removed,

I don't have a problem with it but I am interested in the general comments from other cachers.

I was checking up on one of my caches, and I found one of those mini bottles of liquor in there. I removed it because I didn't believe it was appropriate for younger cachers. However, as I didn't have any trade items, I left nothing. I suppose if something really cool showed up in my cache, I might go out and trade for it. I don't think it would be contrary to the spirit of the game. All of the items I've left have been items I considered "cool". As long as you trade up or even, it sounds good to me.

By all means if it's your cache you can put and take as you please. Like I said, it's yours make of it what you want. On the other hand if it's someone else's cache I still don't see the problem with it as long as you trade.

If I find any alcohol or adult items in a cache I'd take them out and I don't care who's cache it is. I'd put trade items in if I had them with me but the alcohol and adult items are out-a-there. I'd then email the cache owner to let them know what I'd done. If I could figure out who left the stuff I'd send them an email gently reminding them this is family hobby.

So I guess I'm off to trade a used chap-stick for the 20 bucks ;-) J/K!http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=2188

Nice place on a very nice day, and easy to stay out of sight. Mike, Josh and I combined this hunt with a nice Sunday morning bike ride. Took the floppy disk and left a $20 bill SL

I have to disagree. In the same way you shouldn't log your own cache as a find (with a few exceptions), you shouldn't trade with your own caches. The person who put that trade item in the cache most likely intended it to be for someone who also went through the cache-finding exprerience, not for someone who never had to hunt for it.

Replentishing a cache is essentially the same thing. Are you not taking out items and exchanging them with other items? Yeah, Yeah, I know you are not referring to that. You are referring to the point when you see something in your cache that you want, is it alright for you to grab it from your cache. My thought on that is no or if you just have to have that item, put something back that is just as good or better than the item you took from your cache. icon_biggrin.gif This way your not taking away chance for other cachers to find good items.

There are times, however when you should not take items. A signature item is definately one of these items I would never take out of my cache for myself. Personally, I don't know about you , but if I were to take an a signature item from a cache I planted, I would feel dirty. It would be like I did not actually earn the item. I just took it because it was in my cache.

On the same token, if I just have to have the signature item, I then actively search for that signature item in a cache I have not found and make it a priority to hit that cache ASAP before anyone else gets to that cache. This way when I do get it, it is something I earned. Not something I ripped off.

There are times when you need to remove items. I could see removing razor blades, food, candy, or any non appropriate item from a cache, but other than that, leave your cache contents alone, unless you are replentishing it.

I definately appreciate all of the feedback. The item I was interested in was not a TB or a signature item. It was just a School House Rocks magnet that I saw and it took me back to 1974 and Saturday morning cartoons. I found one in another cache it went right on the fridge. Thought it would be cool to have another one. Lolly, lolly, lolly get your adverbs here! icon_smile.gif

Why not. I bet you would trade up in your own cache. I tried to once. There is a cacher here that has radioactive marbles for a sig item. I had just placed the cache and the first finder told me the coordinates where off. I went back to check the coordinates and also brought some stuff to trade for the marble that was there. Got there too late for the marble, but left my stuff.
