It's Time To Prepare The Nascar Race!

With one more football game to go, and the pro-bowl, there's nada on TV.

I did get a little fix with Speed Channel, when it covered the testing in Daytona.

Just heard 43 Cup cars will be testing in Las Vegas for 2 days, 31st - 1st.

That's a RACE! Lets hope to get some good news on that!

We were just down near Homestead Speedway, looking for more cache sites and someone was testing Jan 22nd. Definitely a NASCAR, and not a open wheel.

Wished I could of sniffed it. Miss that smell!

I worked with a Busch team 7 years ago, and we paid $6000.00 to use the track for a day,. I'm sure the cost went way-up now.

Fly, we now have 2 ammo can caches approved near the Speedway.

So far after scouting for days, this is all we came up with.

These are jems considering the locations, and views!

Bay Look Out Point,

The Gas Pipe Hike

Might find more down there, when we head out this weekend. (rain in forecast)

Going to look on the west side, just need that public land.

The south side is out, and I have many new scratches on my Explorer to prove it. Not going to give up on it yet, still a few more trails to explore.

The first race of each season has for as long as I can remember been the 3rd Sunday in February :D

From NASCAR.COM the schedule for speedweek is:

02/12/05 Budweiser Shootout Daytona International Speedway 8PM

02/17/05 Gatorade Duel at Daytona Daytona International Speedway 1PM

02/20/05 Daytona 500 Daytona International Speedway 1PM

Only 13 more days till racing starts up again! :D

Fly, you've decided not to put the race event tags on the bugs?  I didn't add one myself, since I understood there already would be one later.

Same here...

me too

I would have been happy to make my own race goal tag before shipping my entry, but I was going by rule #1:

1. There is an entry fee of $5 per bug or $10 for a team of three. This entry fee will be put towards race medallions for each bug, winning prizes, as well as a donation to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. All bugs must be sent in with this entry fee, as well as the entry form..

This may put some of us at a disadvantage if people don't realize when they pick up our bugs along the way that they are part of a race.

My 2.5 cents...

I've read and re-read over the most current update and no where does it say there aren't going to be race "id" tags, just that fly's going a little simpler.

Excerpt from the website:

"...I'm getting the tags done and then will send the travel bugs out to florida soon. I've decided to go simpler with the tags than originally planned, I hope you all don't mind..."

Did somebody get a different update than the main website? just curious

Maybe meant to add something like:

"...add another complicated tag" or "...add a ritzy 24k gold tag"

that's what I thought it said, just simpler, not gone, glad to see someone else saw that too, and that I didn't imagine it

Nope, you are correct. My apologies to everyone, particularly our race coordinator, for the confusion. I wasn't trying to start a pre-race uprising, honest. :)

Hope I didn't come off to hard but my bunged-up-post-Super Bowl-party-brain was trying to comprehend what was said. I literally must have read that update 10-15 times. ;) The bolded letters where more for my benefit as I was just curious if somebody had a different inside rule change.

Wouldn't be NASCAR stock car racing or any type of true racing if a little friendly gusto and passion never leaked out.

I was thinking about visiting the Bristol cache as part of a trip I'm taking in a few weeks. Looking it over, I now have some misgivings about World's Fastest Half Mile. It's disabled/missing now. I looked at some maps and it's on private property (Bristol Campground and Event Parking) that might not be too friendly (my experience is that private campgrounds tend to be strict as to what they allow on their land). If the owner replaces it, it might disappear again. I hope not, but I'm not confident that this cache will remain in place for the long term, regardless of the cache owner's efforts.

Red Wings at White Top is in a county park just to the south. I think it's a better bet to stay as an active cache. It has a longer history with no muggling so far. According to the topo map, it's slightly closer to the actual track as well.

My opinion is that the cache in the county park should either be the goal cache for Bristol or that it should be posted as "Plan B" if the original cache is still disabled when racers hit that area.

Opinions from the other participants???

I do not think just one cache at any track would work out well.

It would better to have up to 3 caches at every track just for those reasons of poorly maintained, or missing, caches.

If one of theses caches gets archived along the way, it would be a mess to deal with after.

I do like the idea of a bug just hitting a cache, somewhere in the city, or an larger area, that the track is located in. Not just a pre selected cache.

Some tracks are in the boonies.

This would help the race finish faster, and might even finish this year.

I see the way bugs move without a race, and there are a lot of bugs were talking about here.

Bobby Labonte and Richard Petty never made it.

Everybody else did.

I'm extremely busy with working - including my supposed days off - due to a few problems at work (the owner had emergency surgery and the manager hurt his back) but the bugs will be in Florida in time for Daytona, I promise.

I do like the idea for that other cache at Bristol.

Tracks for the rest of the schedule will be announced before the race starts.

If any bugs get close to a certain track cache and it's disabled, I will list an alternate cache on the race page for the bug to go in.

That's 37 then, more than a full truck field. <_<

I like Honest John's idea of a bug going to any cache within a certain number of miles of the tracks zip code. It seems that would speed up the race a bit and make sure there are no disabled caches listed or the designated cahe can handle all of the bugs.

If any bugs get close to a certain track cache and it's disabled, I will list an alternate cache on the race page for the bug to go in.

We all saw the rules when we chose to enter. I agree that John's proposal would be easier to administer, but if Fly can keep up with the format she posted originally, then I think that's what we should stick with. It means attention to a lot of detail and recognizing the problems as they occur. I think she'll be up to it. She already knows to watch for a problem at Bristol.

Besides, my tags are written to have the site checked for specific caches.

This would help the race finish faster, and might even finish this year.

I'm predicting 30 months to get a winner all the back around to Homestead with the current rules package. Honest John's package might speed that up to 28 months, not enough to warrant a change, IMO. I think having a long format makes it much more interesting. Then again, I was among those disappointed when Dover shortened their races from 500s to 400s.

Ok, I sneak in a OT thread now and then to keep this post on top, GUILTY!

Who will win tonight in the Bud Shootout?

I'm going with Joe Nemechek, he has the speed, and the need!

No one pick him for our TB race?

Not my favorite season driver, but they put a lot into their plate program this year.

I think someone said his Mom bought up all his novelties.

Anyway, Joe is a nice guy and great family man.

For those of you who would like a checkered flag background for your travel bug pages, please cut the following html code and paste it into the very beginning of the travel bug page (where you have the smaller box for the goal)

<body background="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/ced47889-f8ce-4036-80a7-07246524160a.jpg">

Also, if you would like camp info to put on your page, you may cut and paste the following into your bug's page somewhere.

<table><tr><td><img src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/d92965be-4bb6-41ec-a80e-000d60bba252.jpg"> </td><td><font color=red><B>

A portion of the proceeds from the entry fees for this travel bug race are being donated directly to the Victory Junction Gang Camp. For more information on the Victory Junction Gang Camp - or an online donation form - please visit the Camp's <a href="http://www.victoryjunction.org">website</a> today. <P> <center>Donations may also be sent to:<BR><font color=blue>

Victory Junction | 4500 Adam's Way | Randleman, NC 27317 <P></center></font></font></td></tr></table></B>

For both of those, you can check any of my three bug's pages to see what the final product looks like.

Had a couple of cachers contact ME, little ole me? :P , about how to insert/modify your TB page so here is a quick list of steps to take to spruce up your pages with a little more "eye-candy" (like virtual paint and decals!) :

1) Log in to the Geocaching.com website with your account and go to the TB you want to edit (the options will only show up if you are logged into the owner account)

2) In the upper right is a group of options "Travel Bug Options"

3) Click on "Edit this item"

4) Insert your background image html and Victory Gang html into the box labeled "Description", if you insert html in the "Mission" box keep it short as there is a ~1000 char limit!

5) Click on "Submit Changes" button

6) Admire your work with the up top link "Visit the Travel Bug Page"

Hope this helps anybody who needs it!

PS: I really like simple web page design and as a web-developer it sure isn't up to any standards but it looks good and that's part of the sport to.

The irony is that I'm the one that posted code and not a single person contacted me! lol.

Cachesafari, no worries... I can always just give you a pit road penalty and hold your bug for the first two racing days if you cause any more trouble.

I would like to suggest to you people one thing that a few people have done is listed their goal for the next cache it has to get to with plans to edit when it reaches that cache. The rest of you might want to consider that information as it seems like a good idea.

With that said, I had considered the any cache within x distance thing, but it really seemed like it would create more problems. Furthermore, in some instances it's difficult to figure out where the track is actually located because many of them use post office boxes for mailing addresses and NOL lists those as the official address of a track. I figured it would be easier for people moving bugs to know that a bug has to get to GCXXXX, because that's definate, as opposed to x distance from zip code 00000, which is much harder to determine quickly.

Aside from that, this is my NASCAR racing series - like Mike Helton and Bruton Smith and the France Family, we play the game my way. lol. :P

You know you love me!

Glad to help when called upon and I know the answer (which is such a rarity for me!) :)

Every good organization needs a leader and that leader has to lead which leads to the leading organization with that leader and the led. There! :P:laughing:

[brown nosing=on]

I want to thank you fly for the work and contacts you put together to get this race up and running! It really has added another way to share, be part of and enjoy my favorite sport this season.

[/brown nosing]

PS: I actually don't have to work this weekend :D by the grace of God, the first in three months. So if you need me just don't hold your breath! Me and my pit crew are going to be driving the couch and crewing the snacks and party favors for the Race! Wish you could all be there!

I have no plans to need anybody in any way shape or form.

My mother better not need taken to the airport during the race, though, or I might have to rip her a new one. She knows darn well I'm not doing ANYTHING during the 500 other than cryin when my drivers wreck.

Mr Co, wipe your nose off. Or I'll penalize your car, too!
