+Prime Suspect
Radio station KIXY, San Angelo, TX, is running a contest, with a current prize of $3000. The money is hidden somewhere in the county, and obscure clues are given out over the air throughout the day. Unfortunately, the searchers are turning up geocaches, and they're actually taking the caches to the radio station, thinking they've found the prize. This cache was hit, and this this one was taken within a few hours of it being placed. From what I've heard, the station's DJs are aware of geocaching, and have been telling people that if they find something marked "geocache", it's not what they're looking for, and to leave it in place. But greed trumps common sense. Quote Link to comment

Good that they are aware of the sport. The least they should do is save the caches for the owner (or another helpful soul) to come and retrieve from the station for later replacement. +VegasCacheHounds
There used to be an alternative rock station in Las Vegas that did a yearly contest called "Jingle Bell Rock", before the station became a Spanish station. They would hide a large jingle bell shaped rock with the stations logo painted on the bottom, and then would give a new clue every day until it was found. The clues started really broad, and then led you towards the correct area, so it took at least a week or two until anyone could narrow it down to an area. Since the prize was ten thousand dollars, there were people searching everywhere and anywhere which even remotely sounded like any of the clues from the first day. Businesses were calling in complaining about tresspassers ripping up landscaping, casinos having people arrested for being in wrong spots (such as the volcano at the Mirage), all types of silly stuff. This was all before Geocaching, but I'm sure many caches would have fallen victim if it was around still. It was quite fun, but after the second year me and my freinds became convinced that they didn't really put the rock out until after a certain periond to ensure the game would last long enough for the sponsers to get their moneys worth Shannon VegasCacheHounds Quote Link to comment

+RiverExplorer
I just temporarily disabled and removed a stage from one of my multi's because it's in the same area as our community's "Tiny Tim's Christmas Treasure Hunt." It's an annual hunt for a $500 gift certificate, with daily clues in the town newspaper. I have to say I didn't really mind it though, since 2 years ago, I was the WINNER! In fact, it was just after winning, that I googled for "treasure hunts" on the internet, and discovered GEOCACHING. So, all's well. Incidently, if anyone wants to come to Shelbyville, IL, and hunt for the treasure, I'll be glad to forward the clues to you! It's like geocaching, just without the GPS! PC Medic
A good reason for a Stash Note in every cache that says "please do not remove container from this location....", or is this a case of over zealous finders not opening the container till they got to the radio station!? +Prime Suspect
Incidently, if anyone wants to come to Shelbyville, IL, and hunt for the treasure... Is Springfield the next town over? And how's the lemon tree doing? Quote Link to comment

+RiverExplorer
Actually, Springfield is about 45 minutes away! The Lemon Tree is not doing so well - about half dead. We don't have Joe's Bar, but we do have Joe's Pizza, but it's not as good as MY Pizza. No Root Marm, though. (We do have several people married to their cousins here.) +JoesBar
I tried the link for KIXY on the first post so I could read about the contest. The current listing, Dec. 2, for the game states the grand prize, $3000, has been found and claimed. So maybe now the local caches are safe. Quote Link to comment
