Visited States

There are a few cachers that have maps associated with their profiles showing the states highlighted. That is something you have to do on your own and add to the page.

If you just want to add a new "category" to your profile though, you can use the following html code to simulate a new category. Just add the following text (modified for your needs) to the last new line of your "hobbies" box in the profile edit page:

<P><B>Visited States:</B></P>

<P>California, Montana, Maine, and Georgia</P>

For example, if you check out my profile, you'll see how I added "Quotes" to my page.

I think j9cache is referring to an image you can generate from one of those atlas sites. It shows a picture of the US and you can pass states in the URL of the image to generate a custom map of your visits. The site uses it for people to show what states they have been to.

No need to criticize for me providing more info.

Thanks Mopar. Looking at the link you can take the URL and add the 2 letter initials for each state you visited to map them.

I agree with ju66l3r, I tried the World66 map on my profile page and it looks squished.

Jeremy, any chance of automating something like this into the profile page, or is it fluff that powerusers can easily add on their own?

And on a related subject, did you decide whether to increase the amount of data that can be included on a profile page before hitting the limit? Last I checked, I was maxed out... yet I could add the World66 map link.

ask because I don't like the aspect ratio of the World66 link (too wide).

I don't know if you can do this with a dynamic image like the world66 map, so it might not work, but have you tried forcing the size/aspect ratio of the map in the HTML?

The way I did the map on my profile page was by first getting a US map picture from the internet. I just used Google's image search to find one I liked. I also had to find a picture which lent itself to the "fill" aspect of an image editor like Paint. For example, the outlines of the states needed to be continuous, without any breaks, so that the color would just fill the one state I wanted.

Once I had an image that met this criteria, I opened the image in Paint (I'm not smart enough to use Photoshop, but I can work wonders in Paint) and colored the states I wanted. Here's the end result:

Here is the code I eventually settled on. Change height/width to fit your desires and remember to set your states by changing the two-letter codes at the end of the src= field.

J9cache: Use the code ju66l3r posted. Obviously you can change the states, and just change the height="450" width="640" to whatever values you think look good (the values are in pixels. To give you a point of reference, most computers these days have a screen size of at least height="768" width="1024" )

I just tried adding "width=320 height=200" to the html that they provide and it works just fine.  Play with the numbers to get them the way you like it.

OK, surprisingly, I succeeded in getting the map to do, but I am too spread out. Can someone 'splain me how to do what this says? Where to put it in what order of the html letters? Thanks.

You almost have it!

Right now your html looks like this"

<p><b>Visited States:</b></p>

<p>Colorado, Arizona</p>

<img src="width=320" height="200">

Instead, make it look like this:

<p><b>Visited States:</b></p>

<p>Colorado, Arizona</p>

<img src="http://www.world66.com/myworld66/visitedStates/statemap?visited=COAZ"width=320" height="200">

Mushtang, did you generate that entirely on your own or from an automatic service like World66?

I ask because I don't like the aspect ratio of the World66 link (too wide). I prefer something more familiar like your's.

I just found a blank outline of the united states on the internet and filled in the states with the paint program. After that I erased the outline of the states I hadn't finished.

It's WAY more work than the automatic link that Mopar gave us. I like the automatic image a lot better with the new aspect ratio too. But I'll probably still keep doing my profile with my outline just to stay a little different.

Someone always beats me to saying something really usefull. lol.

The best way to play with aspect ratio is to right click on the image and then click properties. At the bottom of the properties box, it shows the size of the image (in pixels).. If the image is really big, dividing each number by two will probably give you an image the size you'd like it to be.

Then you don't have to completely guess with numbers and hope that you didn't mess up the size.

Thanks for the link!

I'm trying to make the site a bit less USA centric, so probably not. If I did I'd have to include the entire globe.

Actually, it looks like World66 is not totally USA-centric. You can also mark the European countries, although not by province. I just signed up to see what else is available.

Con-sarn-it!! I'm sitting in the Newark airport typing this in, while waiting for a flight that's been delayed for over an hour. If I'd known this I would have had time on my business trip to do a little more geocaching, and I would have been able to add New Jersey too.

I spend the day in New York City today in a 10 hour long meeting. I was fortunate enough to have time last night to grab a NYC cache, but with the rainy weather I decided not to go for a NJ cache.

And of course today was nice and sunny, and it turned out I had plenty of time to go caching between the meeting and the flight. But noooooo.

I just wanted to vent a little.

Please pitty me.
