Ngs Appears To Be Down

Hmmm. Still cannot access PID files at 6:45 AM (Eastern) Monday morning. Must be a major revamp or failure.

Those who make submissions to NGS may wish to monitor over the next thirty days to make certain that all pending data eventually gets loaded into the database.

(I usually see my entries loaded within ten days, but there was a time in October when it actually took one full month.)

I've just heard from Craig Larrimore, NGS IT specialist. There was a hardware problem and they have switched over to their alternate site (using "wwwest" instead of "www") until they resolve the issue. He hopes to have the main site back up by Wednesday. Once the main site is back in operation, the old links will work properly again.

Wow, you guys are so fast.

I was going to come in here and annouce that we had a problem, but looks like I got beat to the punch.

But since I am here, I'll tell you what I know.

The NGS data base crashed. I have been told that the hard disc just decided to take an early retirement or something (i.e. broke). The disc has been replaced and they are working on loading it up with the data from backups. Obviously this takes a bit of time, but things seem to be moving along.

Thanks everyone for your patience!

It would appear we are not out of the woods yet.

One of our techs here at the office wonders why a Sun engineer has to be called in to switch out a hard drive.

I ventured that maybe it's on a remote server, or possible it's leased equipment. But that's just speculation my part. Enquiring taxpayers want to know.

Art Man,

I know they have a back up system for Disaster Recovery in Colorado, I am guessing since they just replaced a Hard drive over Thanksgiving and having this result so soon, perhaps they feel the problem may be beyond the scope of their Sys Admins and DBA's to handle. Sun Boxes are their own animal too. It could be that it is administrated by contractors now so as to control costs. IT is full of contractors these days as you know...

SYBASE

I brought this forward once but maybe I will try it again.

Look under who the CEO,of SYBASE is.

Under SR Management team or Board of Directors.

I am sure he is the same one who has Groundspeak,is it not?

Well, I am not sure where we are with this, but one need only look at Jeremy's Bio to get where you need to go on Groundspeak... As excerpted from Jeremy's Bio:

<snip> Jeremy is now the President and Co-founder of Groundspeak, Inc., the company that owns and operates Geocaching.com. Jeremy lives in the Seattle, Washington Area (aka The Emerald City) with his wife, and two beagles <snip>

And returning us to the regularly scheduled program on this channel: SUN engineer in scheduled to be here at 8:30am tomorrow to replace disk.

So we'll look for more info then! :-)

And today's blow-by-blow updates!

12/07/04 9:15am - SUN engineer has not arrived yet.

Unix Sys administrator says the

9:50am - SUN engineer is on DC beltway in heavy traffic.

10:50am - Disk is being replaced.

Database is shutdown.

Hope to back in 1 hour.

12:01pm - Still working on it.

12:40pm - Disk replaced.

Working on database recovery.

1:40pm - Recovery Complete.

You may resume updates.

Hi Geo,

I am not sure I understand your connections here.

This company, Sybase INC. does not seem to have anything with the NGS Database being down. The John Chen of Sybase may or may not necessarily be the same John Chen of Geoteaming, and Geoteaming is not Geocaching or Groundspeak. I already sorted that out up the thread a bit.

However, Team building is an important part of any organization, in fact, TV shows like Monster House and Monster Garage on discovery illustrate this each week. Teamwork is a very big deal in life. Geocaching in groups can be used to help build teamwork skills, and there have been events to do exactly that.

It is not uncommon for corporate executives to sit on the boards of different companies while they are CEO of others. So, since this is not the topic regarding the status of the NGS database, nor about benchmark hunting in general, maybe asking Jeremy directly would be a better bet. Perhaps it would be a better topic for a different forum?

Thanks Geo,

Rob

Thanks Rob,

Yes you are correct Geoteaming is awesome,I have talked personally to Mr. Chen, about Geoteaming over a year ago.We conversed on the phone and through a series of e-mails.

At that time there was not enough interest in Geoteaming here and it still seems that at benchmarking we are even farther apart, which tends to make it harder to be a TEAM in person, just online.

But it is still there in the back of my mind waiting for the opportunity to blossom into a beautiful thing.

There are many methods to my madness sometimes, and talking about one thing leads to another.

One of the points I would like to insert here is that is exactly what we are trying to accomplish,in many aspects.

1. With the Event we are trying to plan on the Benchmark Event in Sante Fe 2005.

2. With a dysfuntional Data base.

3. And many, many other things we are not aware of.

I was just looking around a while back and seen the SYBASE,and wondered the connection,if any?

This post all started with me trying to find a benchmark in a data base.

The event is an attempt to find some of those in the same data base.

Sometimes I make large leaps in thought and assume other can fill in the blanks but so far this seldom works as in this case.

So I will just be blunt about what I am trying to say from now on.

It seems tonight the data base is working fine.
