John says that he sure doesn't want Brian to kiss him!

Me neither, at least when he's having that squid again.:blink:

It was an octopus!

Oh, nevermind then.icon_smile_kisses.gif:blink:

Oh! Was 'That' an octopus?? I thought it was a.....oops can't say that here.....:blink:

The first time I saw the picture, I thought he was eating some poor animal's ball sack ...

Good heavens! What did I miss? Where?

This is easily the mildest forum I've ever been a part of. A short bark of rudeness is the worst I've ever seen here. I've been in political forums where the people on the same side of the argument roughed each other up worse than this. I witnessed a bloody coup attempt in a photography forum once. And don't get me started on the kidney disease people!

Don't make me call you a bunch of...of...felines.

I really haven't seen that much hostility here but I don't read all the post either.

It has been my experience that ALL forums have flamers, bashers and outright hatered at times. It's crazy to see how mean people will be when they know they can and nobody can put a face to the name. Some of the worst I've seen...Stock and investing forums, Christian forums (go figure), psychedelic users forums, and sewing forums??? What is wrong with people?

I'm thankful for the "back" button.

check out some cooking forums. don't mention martha stewart. <shudder> we are a bunch of "felines" compared to them. :(

Something else you guys should consider, from this new guy's point of view...

I've seen more threads complaining about people's behavior, the week or so I've been here, than I have seen of actual bad behavior.

I've been to lots of forums over the years, been a moderator in many different roles, and this community is more well behaved than most forums I've been to.

A while back, I had an email discussion group (actually a majordomo list for those who know) about a certain kind of music. There was a core of really obnoxious folks making trouble. So I created a parallel "flame pit" discussion group. If folks caused real trouble after some warnings, they were unsubbed by me from the main list and subbed to the flame pit.

It worked, people calmed down - eventually. The irony was... some of them LIKED the flame pit and happily stayed there! Go figure.

If I were in charge here, I'd take the worst threads and move them to a "flame pit" topic area which would be accessible only by a separate password to keep them safe and separate from the regular forums. Worst offenders would lose their password access to the main forums completely, with only access to the flame pit section for discussions.

Those folks don't get their regular forum privileges back for a specified time (maybe 3 weeks?) and only then if they email or post a public apology and a promise to play nice from then to keep their access to the regular sandbox.

Just my thought du jour... verlegen.gif

That actually sounds like fun ... it would be great to take a dive into the pit for awhile then climb back out all bruised and bloody. :(

I have another suggestion. Let's disable the moderator rights for one week and let's see what happens. I bet everything will be much smoother and more relaxed. Controversial topics will actually be discussed as they should.

Great timing on your suggestion... I've just been away on a business trip all week long, and without internet access. So, any angst that's occurred this week is caused by the moderator's absence! :(:(:(

Thanks for the laugh!

i didn't notice an increase in rudeness. nor did i notice anything that warrants more than passing notice.

close the forums? piffle. it you're particularly bothered, it's probably you that needs a break.

i did not notice anything about last thanksgiving that was worthy of note, either. did i miss something important?

what DOES need attention is the persistent use of the idiot term "muggle" in a non-geocaching context. the problem is not rudeness. the problem is not short tempers. the PROBLEM is this juvenile and embarrassing practice, adn those who insist on it should be banned from the forums. then everything would be real swell like in the good old days.

if you need me i'll be over there, polishing my firearms.

Anyone remember last year's "Thanksgiving Massacre"?

with 27 8x10 color glossy photographs...

I remember that that Thanksgiving

It was, I recall, mostly a creation of ONE MOD who went on a power trip and made a bunch of people so angry at being mistreated that they took it personally (go figure).

Funny, your join date is February 5th, 2004. I don't remember having a Thanksgiving since then :(

There already is one. Some people call it the 'litterbox."

Wasn't it around Thanksgiving last year when there was a big spike in hostile posts? What is it about this time of the year?

It’s dysfunctional family unity.

Proximity to relatives and decreased serotonin levels would be my guess. :(

Gee thanks.

I never did get to eat dinner that day! :(

Hey Lazyboy

you better be careful, Ralann will get a bunch of your caches archived. I think he is the new goecop of Klamath County. He is one reason I quit caching.

Hello,

These last couple of posts appear at worst to be a personal attack and at most to be a local issue among geocachers. I have no idea what the issue is, but in either case, they're unrelated to the topic of "shutting down the forums for a week." Thus, the discussion ought to be moved to your regional forum, a forum for your local geocaching organization, or PM's/e-mail. Thanks.

I don't have control issues,

Hmmmmmmm.....

I beat him to the punch. I archived all my Klamath Caches today.

There's always some truth to any myth, but offline is the better place to handle this. Down here in Texas we just trash our "Self Appointed Cache Police" at events and save the online angst.

Good plan, we'll invite you to our next event cache, a geolynching I think it's called  You might enjoy it!!!

We'd like it if this guy would contact us instead of approvers when he spots a problem with one of our caches. Wouldn't that be nice? But he enjoys clicking that "needs to be archived" button instead and then comes on here telling people to shut the forums down to cool off.

Control, that's his gig for sure.

Okay, I had dinner with GeoForse over the weekend and we discussed the whole issue of civility in the forums. We both felt that the forums had gotten a little courser over the years. Moderators didn't spring from the Earth just because Jeremy said "jump".

Some folks do use these forums to dump their daily frustrations with life, and try to disguise it as some oblique Geocaching issue. I have had a run-in with one person that routinely used the forums to dump in. If someone is routinely starting trouble, they need to be dealt with.

I have been in and out (mainly out) over the last several months. Now that I have a major hurdle out of the way, I plan on being around a little more.

I don't know ... I've been in this forum for almost two years and I don't see that very often. And when it does happen I simply ignore it and move on.

Normally, I ignore and move on too, but sometimes, that is the very thing that derails a topic, or starts flamewars. One very banned cacher was very good at starting stuff, and then would spend a lot of additional time, energy and resources trying to rally the troops to his cause. The stuff was ALWAYS off topic, or just not worth fighting over.

Most of the time, I would ignore it, but the more it continued, the more annoyed i found myself getting.

Until someone gets their chocolate in someone else's peanut butter and all heck breaks loose.

Tooooo close to the Turkey Day From Heck anniversary for that.

somebody give a recap. I wasn't here last year.

This is the only response I am gonna make to this... I have tried to contact you about caches, I got no response... A SBA log is there to alert YOU AND OTHER cachers about a serious problem in a cache that would make it 100% impossible to find it(missing being the main reason) that is why I posted it. ALSO, I am gonna leave out my personal opinions about things as to stay within the forum guidelines.

this topic has drifted away from the original topic and personal attacks have been made which violate the TOS or something.

This this thread has reached its maximum intellectual limit and will now be shut down.
