Raul
Is geocaching appropriate for adults? Hi, we were thinking about trying geocaching due to our longstanding interests in orienteering, marine navigation, hiking, and GPSing. However, we noticed that the pictures on the site main page show only children. So we are concerned that if the sport is only for children or families with small children, single people and couples like us would be an intrusion into this family activity. Can anyone advise us about this? Thanks Quote Link to comment

jfitzpat
The sport is certainly family friendly, but I don't see why the average adult wouldn't enjoy it. You might find that you don't bother swapping trinkets, but the hunt is still fun. My older daughter and I are going to place a cache together in April that I think most adults would find very challenging. Enjoy! -jjf Quote Link to comment
+alchemist2000
This is a sport that is truly for ALL ages (and I speak as one who has already been most of those ages already). It is definitely not restricted to children. We are empty nesters and have found it to be a wonderful excuse to get out and explore new locations in our area. There are so many different types of caches that it can appeal to people of different ages, different fitness levels, and different levels of "geekness". Welcome to geocaching. I hope you find it as much fun as we do!! Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
I can't speak for others, but in my house the kids don't mind their picture being taken and the adults hate it. So kids pictures it is. It's an adult hobby. Kids also love it. When kids and parents agree on a hobby it's a good thing. My son acutlly thanked me for discovering this hobby. Go figure. QuixotiC
I don't think that geocaching is just for kids...I just started getting into all of this, and I'm going to be graduating from college soon- I already have some ideas for making a cache that should be interesting (hopefully) to find- that would involve above a child's level to find/solve- Juggling, unicycling, are those just for kids? Nope QuiX "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams" Quote Link to comment

+inceptor
Age really does not matter. Sometimes I'm 49 other times 25 and on occaision 16. This used to drive the wife crazy. This is a sport for all ages. Something you can do alone, with the wife or in a group, it does not matter. For alot of us, the real challenge here is the hunt. All you have to do is enjoy yourself. inceptor the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys Quote Link to comment

+Vertigo
I dont think it's for kids at all, I think the kids just end up tagging along. how many kids do you see asking for a GPS for their birthday? (well I dont really know that they dont, I'm only assuming). Quote Link to comment
+Web-ling
quote:Originally posted by Raul: However, we noticed that the pictures on the site main page show only children. Well, in my case, the kids are a whole lot cuter than I am! I don't think that the sport is mostly for kids, I think the kids just have a lot more pictures taken. There are a lot of caches I wouldn't take my kids to, because they would be too difficult for my kids. Jump on in! Happy caching! Quote Link to comment

+DxChallenged
Is geocaching for adults? Oh Man, the husband and I are dreaming of a time when we will be able to cache on a weeks vacation just the two of us....Maybe to forgien lands.... You're out in the woods, talking to each other, getting in shape and enjoying areas that you would not have otherwise discoverd. Finding the box is an added bonus although I rarely take something for myself. I enjoy adding the logs...... Can just adults enjoy geocaching...You betcha!! +briansnat
I'm 43 and enjoy Geocaching. Sometimes I go with the wife and kid. Sometimes alone, or with adult friends. Anybody who enjoys the outdoors should like Geocaching. I'm an avid hiker and Geocaching simply adds to the hiking experience. Quote Link to comment
+Team Roman Geoskis
It's not just a sport for kids, but for kids at heart! Our team is made up of 3 guys in their late 40's (one just hit 50, but we're not allowed to talk about that!) and a lady thats been 29 forever. We just placed a cache "Stairway To Heaven" GC45A0 thats definately not for children due to difficulty. Try it, you'll like it. LOST IN SPACE..... Quote Link to comment

+ApK
Yes! My wife and I love the excuse to find new places. Other adults we've dragged along all like it, too. +Luggage & Leather
I've only cached 2 times (and intend to do it a lot more) and think some places may be appropriate only for adults. The second cache that I did today I would have been worried taking a kid (but as a 45 year old with no kids, I could be biased). If you like to explore the outdoors, and help the environment (pick up others trash) this is a great sport, and lots of fun. The first day that I tried it, I learned about a wonderful place to go hiking that I had no idea existed, even though it was only 2 miles from my home. I'm hooked already and only learned about it today!!! Quote Link to comment

+RangerRick
I'm a 48 kid and I like to go geocaching with or without my children. About a month ago, I got out of my car and was preparing to go on a cache hunt and an elderly couple approached me and asked what the thing was I was holding in my hand.(my GPSr). After explaining to them about geocaching, they said they would tag along if I didn't mind. As it turned out, they arrived at the cache site about 30 seconds before I did. And they were 84 years old! +jaxxom
My biggest hunt was 10 in one day, and I did it with my ten year old daughter. She loved it and twice reminded me to sign the logs. Yes, there are some I would never take her on, and naturally I would never do those myself due to my petite frame , but for the most part I think this is a hobby that can be done with kids and adults together Quote Link to comment
+lightnsound
I don't wanna grow up -- I'm a GPS kid......... I am not addicted to geocaching, really. Quote Link to comment
+smithdw
I'm 39 and there's a lot of geocachers in this area in the 40-65 year age. I know of a few that are retired and they go out geocaching almost every day. Unfortunately, I have to work, so it's mostly weekends for me. Geocaching is for every age. I've taken my 2 year-old son on a few caches, but some of the areas aren't really safe if they are near rivers, lakes and steep hills or cliffs. The main part is to just have fun. +TotemLake
I'm 44 and up until a month ago, was on the hunt for a new hobby that took me outdoors and wasn't nearly as dangerous as riding a bicycle in the Seattle Metropolitan area. I've only found a couple handfuls of caches, but I'm definitely hooked and will soon need to consider GPS anonymous and the 12 steps to recovery as soon as I can locate the coordinate points for that cache... Cheers! TL Quote Link to comment

The fun part for me is the adventure, and finding nice little parks in your own neighboorhood that you did not know were there. Many of the objects found in the caches are junk object for children, and sometimes that can be dissapointing especialy when your search takes more than an hour or so. The best thing I found in a cache was a MAP Source CD! I enjoy the outdoors, and I have found that I can combine geocaching with biking and hiking. Have Fun! +Cachetrotters
I agree with all ages. However, it can be like the movies. Most you can take the kids to, a few you go with the spouse only, and occasionally the one you better not let your other half know about ... Quote Link to comment

I spent my 43rd birthday caching with geobuddies this past weekend. I work at a science museum and cache to get away from kids and their noise! Now go out there and find you some trinkets.
