avroair
New cache type: Earth Cache. Has anyone placed or seen one in the Northeast yet? Quote Link to comment
+HartClimbs
I've placed one (well, not placed actually - but reported one). I got a nice note back from the earthcache guy - but it hasn't been listed yet. Interesting idea. Quote Link to comment
+Salvelinus
Anyone have a link to the guidlines for these? Here is a list of current Earth Caches I have found. I know several regular caches that might fit as Earthcaches. Salvelinus Quote Link to comment
Prairie Jeepin
I'm not sure I got this right or not, but I recall reading somewhere the meaning/explanation of the word Geocache....... Geo = Earth, Cache = stashed goods/supplies. Now, I may be missing something here but, does this not make the term "Earth Cache" redundant? Could there not be a more appropriate name for this new cache type that isn't just a new way of saying the same thing we refer to all our caches as? Like perhaps Eco Cache? Just a question of curiosity. Quote Link to comment
+º
Earthcaches are educational virtual caches which are being developed around the world. They aim to provide geocachers with a small lesson about the geology of the wonderful planet on which we live. Earthcaches are a project of the Geological Society of America and its partners (including Groundspeak). Earthcache Central ... wer lesen kann ist klar im Vorteil. Quote Link to comment
+chstress53
http://www.geosociety.org/EarthCache/guidelines.htm This is the link to create this new cache type. I am currently working on one for NJ should be ready for submission soon. Quote Link to comment
+2Wheel'in
I have used the geosociety.com on-line submission form twice (two submissions on the same EarthCache in the NoVa/MD area) both submissions came back/rejected saying the delivery address was "unknown" and not deliverable. I sent the GSA a separate e-mail asking for guidance, but so far...no response. Regards, Bill Quote Link to comment
+c88m
Ok What exactly is a Earthcache ? Why isn't it list as a type of cache ? Quote Link to comment
+IV_Warrior
Ok What exactly is a Earthcache ? Why isn't it list as a type of cache ? This forum thread will get you started on your answer Basically it's a new type of virtual cache, but specific to unique geological features. Has special approval requirements, in addition to normal gc.com guidelines. Quote Link to comment
avroair
Anyone placed one of these yet? Quote Link to comment
+Team Perrito Blanco
I may be wrong, but I think I remember Brian saying at TRL's last event that he was considering putting one together. Quote Link to comment
+Metaphor
Simulatmore has one pending in Western Maryland, and there is another pending in PA. Listing Quote Link to comment
+HartClimbs
I'd forgotten about this but the EarthCache listing I'd submitted had gotten approved, listed, and found by several folks. Sounds like they enjoyed the hunt - and the destination - so I'm a happy earthcache lister!!! Cool..... Quote Link to comment
avroair
Thanks Hart, only 260 miles from here!!! Is that the nearest, can one be placed in New Jersey!!! Quote Link to comment
+Team Rampant Lion
Based on what I have been reading, there should be the opportunity to place some in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. I have identified a couple spots that might qualify. I sent the NPS an email to see if they are interested. My question is: do all the NPS Earthcaches have to participate in the grant project? The formal grant submission, 10 day work requirement, publication history and geologist status knocks me out of the running if that is the case. Doh! 10 days of work!! Quote Link to comment

I read somewhere that its the largest single boulder in NJ. Tripod Rock would probably qualify, but there's already a cache there. There are numerous other erratics (that's erratics, not erotics guys) in northern NJ that might be eligible. Most of the sites I can think of already have caches. Turtle Rocks, Millington Gorge, the Great Swamp, Hatfield Swamp. Hmmm, maybe Sandy Hook is a possiblity? Being in the Gateway National Recreation Area, real caches are banned there. There might be a way to incorporate Sandy Hook as an earthcache. Some other ideas might be found here, here and here. Quote Link to comment
avroair
Good to know most of Essex county is a Devonian Comglomerate... is that mob related? Quote Link to comment
+Packanack
I would think the Great Falls would qualify, as would Bearfort Ridge with the puddingstone. Quote Link to comment
avroair
Anyone tried this yet? If you live within 100 miles of me, I will drive to come and get it! And lunch is on me Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I would think the Great Falls would qualify, as would Bearfort Ridge with the puddingstone. There is a very large puddingstone outcrop on the way to Terrace Pond. Quote Link to comment
avroair
Earthcaches are not be listed under individual owners, they can be found here: My Earth Cache list Quote Link to comment
