+Lothar69 Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I recently started caching and have since encouraged some friends to cache as well. We plan to do some caching together. What's the etiquette in terms of logging our finds? Should we sign the log book once but both log on the cache page to get credit? Should credit only go to the person that actually finds the cache? Obviously this is not a major issue since caching is not inherently a competitive activity but I don't want to trod over precedents that have been set. I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. +briansnat Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I've done group hunts before and everybody involved logs the cache, no matter who found it. Depending on who I've gone with, sometimes a person will spot the cache, walk away and announce they found it and let each other person find it on their own. This can be very entertaining, especially if you're the first one to find it. Other times, someone would just announce they found it, pull it out and we'd gather and sign the logbook. In both cases everyone logged them as finds online and I don't think anybody has a problem with that. Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. +MtnLion Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 We have groups of cachers go out together regularly. They all sign the log at the cache and they all log finds back on the cache page. Noone really seems to find it upsetting in the least. Quote
DanIAm Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 Both my wife and I are new to caching and have found only 3 thus far. Before we even got started we both registered with our own user names. We decided that we would both log our finds on each username. Mainly because I already know I will probably be doing more hunts then she will. This will allow us to keep a more accurate count on our finds. Again we're newbies, but this is what we've done so far. Quote
+Planet Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 Everybody sign!! It's for posterity! Everybody log! Some are funnier, some more creative, some plain and simple, it's for posterity! And each log is another e-mail to the hider. Think how poplular they'll feel. Cache you later, Planet So many caches, so little time. Quote

+CYBret Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I saw a log on a cache in our area once....apparently two guys went together, one spotted it first so he got to log a find, the other one only logged a note. That's a lot of work for a note. Usually when we cache in a group we'll do what BrianSnat mentioned above and let everyone take a crack at it...other times it's a group effort to find it so the group gets to log the find...either way works for us. +robert Posted August 12, 2003 Posted August 12, 2003 I agree with the "find it and walk away" theory. It's fun for everyone to find the caches, kind of a "moment of discovery" thing. In some instances you really can't do that but if possible, I would recommend it. Gives more of a feeling of accomplishment when you find it on your own. ~robert Notice: Driver carries less than $20 cache. Quote
Fianchetto Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 I count two logs. The paper log in the cache, and the electronic log at the site. The paper log being finite, we generally make one entry, the group each having opportunity for input. Then the "infinite" e-logs. Everyone who was with the group should log the find, because everyone in the group found it. I I find one alone, I say so in my entry, if with a group, I enter their names, too, in a 'we found it ' spirit. Quote
+Mark 42 Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 I would never claim to have found a cache I never even saw. When my wife and I cache together (with the dog & kids), I usually will sign for both of us... I do the writing while she helps the kids do the trinket exchange. I usually ask if she wants me to write for her, and she always has the opportunity to add to the entry. When she goes by herself, she will log only herself. When I went by myself, I only logged myself... Then I went with her a few days later and watched her find it on her own (Only giving hints like "Read the log entries again"). Here is an Example of one where we went together after one of us had previously found it. But if you were never there, IMNSHO, it's not ethical to log a find. +flask Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 when i cache with crashco, we kind of have this code: "don't spare my feelings" means if you find it, let me know. other wise, we step away and shout "huckle-buckle-beanstalk" or simply "do you want to keep looking?". if we are huting with anothe cache (as sometimes happens) we are more explicit in our communication, but the concept is the same. i always write for both crashco and myself. if we are caching with another party, whoever saw it first gets to open the container and sign the book first. the one who saw it first also gets first pick of the trade items, which is hard to swallow if you don't see it first and one of brenda's rocks is in there. -====)) -)))))))))))) presta schrader Quote
+Scout65 Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 Usually when searching with other cachers one of us will just holler out that we’ve found it, except for when we encounter a uniquely camouflaged cache, in that case everyone gets to have a stab at finding it. If there are young children in the group we’ll find the container and then steer them towards it so they can find it *first*. No matter who finds it everyone who made the trip (account or no account) signs the log book and the registered cachers log online. Quote
