Kerry. Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 Some might ask, who is Ivan A. Getting? Ivan Getting basically conceived the global positioning system and was the visionary behind the system we now know as GPS. Getting and colleague Bradford Parkinson were awarded the Draper prize in early 2003 for conceiving and developing GPS. Cheers, Kerry. I never get lost everybody keeps telling me where to go Quote
+Scout65 Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 I thought Al Gore invented the GPS. Oh wait, he invented the internet, sorry. Quote

Without getting into a political argument, Gore never said he "invented the internet". That story comes from Rep. Dick Armey misquoting an excerpt from an interview Wolf Blitzer did with Gore on CNN. He did sponsor the bills that initiated the funding for the system that would eventually evolve into the internet. "Don't mess with a geocacher. We know all the best places to hide a body." Quote
+Scout65 Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 That's true, he didn't say that he invented the internet. His exact words in the interview with Wolf Blitzer were "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet". He was a supporter of technology that helped the internet evolve to what it is today, but to say that he created it is kind of a stretch. The internet was already being used by the time he was elected to congress. Quote
cutsandbruises Posted October 19, 2003 Posted October 19, 2003 EXCUSE ME!! May I interupt this thread to pay my respects to Ivan Getting.. Without his ability to foresee the use of GPS we would all be sitting in front of the TV watching reality shows instead of out there experiencing the world. Granted the GPS system was not invented for us techno geeks of liesure initially, but like any technology it eventually filters down to the masses for use. Thank You Ivan Getting... GEOCACHING CHANGED MY LIFE - Laugh everyday. Life's too short. But if you have to get mad then that's OK too. Quote
+Alan2 Posted October 19, 2003 Posted October 19, 2003 No disrespect, but do you have the coordinates of where he's buried? Alan Quote
jarja_grl and G-man Posted October 19, 2003 Posted October 19, 2003 Thanks Ivan! Does geocaching mean that I have to give up reality TV? Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Quote
+Ducky Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 I hope he died knowing how much pleasure his brainchild has givin the Geocaching community and the world at large. http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/7044635.htm http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-3276998,00.html Work Smarter, Not Harder! +Cave Troll and Eeyore Posted October 20, 2003 Posted October 20, 2003 Maybe someone should place a cache in Ivan Gettings homeland in memory of him. As previously posted we wouldn,t be into this great hobby without his visionary. Quote
