Nurse Dave
Also a note about sig items. If you're going to collect those it helps if you have something neat of your own and then people will want to swap you for it. Obviously. Unfortunately not all of us have the extra $$ available to do something like that. No doubt a challenge Allanon, but it's doesn't necessarily take a bundle of rubles - just IMAGINATION. Simply a matter of coming up with an unusual notion, and then - roll yer own! If it's clever enough, traders will flock to your door. True, true. A very original handmade item is worth as much in geocaching swag dollars as a shiney new coin. Quote Link to comment
TotemLake
Also a note about sig items. If you're going to collect those it helps if you have something neat of your own and then people will want to swap you for it. Obviously. Unfortunately not all of us have the extra $$ available to do something like that. Let's give you an idea of cost wise to do something on your own... I started off with this card, cost, about $.15 each when you figure in the level of ink I was using, and the cost of the card: Then I went to this card, about the same cost: This one on the other hand, cost me significantly more, about $.25 a piece and 7 minutes per tag total. I get about 7 per sheet of shrinky dink. I did this way before I considered getting involved with coins. You don't have to start off on a high note, just a personal one. Quote Link to comment
Allanon
Sorry TL, I was mostly responding to all the pictures of coins (since that is what the thread is about). So I wasn't even thinking about 'other options', although now that you and globalgirl have brought it up (and jcar talked about what GG talked to him about last weekend), I actually have come up with something that I think might be interesting... Need to do some more thinking about it... Quote Link to comment
globalgirl
....(and jcar talked about what GG talked to him about last weekend), I actually have come up with something that I think might be interesting.... Yep Allanon, jcar and I talked of ideas for sig items. Personally, I think it's most imaginative to fashion your sig item to complement your username. Jcar said his was derived from the initials of his family, and it seems to me that some sort of toy car with a J on it could be especially kewl for him (not to mention easy/cheap to do). Could even put out say... all red cars, but every once in awhile (for special caches, milestones, FTF prizes, etc.) drop a say... gold car. Then those that collect would prize a gold one... No end to the ideas. But alas, my own special - THE perfect "globalgirl" sig item continues to elude me. The response to the little "scratch off" lottery tickets I use for my Dumb Luck Cache has been very favorable, so am thinking I might make lottery tickets with my globe avatar or whatever on 'em for my sig item, and some will be "winners" for some halfway keen prize. Still mulling just how to do it best. Any and all ideas welcome. Then again, what I reeeeeeeeealy pine after - is some sort of glass "globe" marble or somesuch. And then some way to somehow attach my name, etc. - ideally even number them. Trouble is, like many here - I simply don't have a bundle of rubles to spend for 500 of them. Anybody know where I might get kewl wee "globes" or somesuch, cheap? But the point is Allanon - coins are swell, but TONS of other kewl notions could be just as neat - arguably even neater if they're truly imaginative. Quote Link to comment
TotemLake
Hey Globalgirl, the first thing I thought of when I saw your alias, was a girl doing a mushy hug with arms wrapped around a globe. Quote Link to comment

(note to self: get a grip, gg - now how on earth would you do THAT?) Then again - now HERE'S my "in my DREAMS" gg sig item. The smaller glass marbles aren't too pricey, and... Wow, check out the ones with the 22K gold continents! The 1/2" one is just $5.99 - maybe I could use just the wee plain green continent ones for regular caches and... spring for a 22K one for milestones and/or treats for FTFs on my caches. Trouble izzz... how do I attach a tag with my "goblalgirl", and ideally - a number??? Sorry to wander so off-topic here folks, but now you've got me thinkin'... Indeed joe, some great ideas there. You're right, the passport wouldn't be all that tough - I envision just a wee "gift tag" size or smaller, laminated and - there'd be plenty of room for my name plus to number them. Still... I surely wish there was some way to somehow inscribe/permanently attach my name and the number to the marble. I was toying with the idea of creating some sort of base and attaching it to the marble w/ my handy-dandy epoxy putty. That way the marble wouldn't roll and could be displayed... And the bag idea is neat too, as... especially for the 22K, would need to protect it 'cuz apparently the gold flakes off with wear and tear. But... ideally would like to be able to SEE the sweet marble. I was thinking... voile bag or... possibly a wee clear plastic case... Quote Link to comment
globalgirl
How about this signiture item. Peace, Nolenator Woa, now THAT is supremely kewl, Nol! But at $14.50 a crack - you'd either have to be very stingy w/ your sig drops, or... cut waaaaay back on your finds! But seriously. Too kewl! Perhaps... you could somehow devise something similar yourself? (i.e. how handy are you with tin-snips?) Quote Link to comment

Facedances
It's one of those "Silver" USA coins. It comes in the case. I bought it for my son for X-mas, but see how I managed to get it into my own collection already! I wouldn't have spent the money on it just for myself. Quote Link to comment
Square Bear
Facedances, that is a nice coin I just had to have one also. Expensive but silver and only 100 made just couldn't pass it up. Quote Link to comment
KC0GRN
I got one of those too, expensive yes, but again, only a hundred out (least they made em limited). Sadly my collection still leaves much to be desired. Oh well, it'll get there someday, probably after I have my own geocoin minted and then I can trade for ones I don't have. Quote Link to comment
globalgirl
Speaking of geocoins and other custom somewhat spendy sig items - here's a question for ya... How many do you have minted and - more importantly, how often do you drop one in a cache? I mean... even at my paltry 25-30 caches/mo., I surely can't afford to pop a special pretty into each and every cache. I believe Moun10bike drops his wooden coins in most every cache, and his niftys - in what, just special ones? There's also the factor of "rarity" (for lack of a better term) I mean... limited editions. Wouldn't it maybe be better to just put out say... 100 or so, that way they'd be more sought after and prized, yes? Just muttering out loud here (always dangerous) - what do you all do/think? Quote Link to comment
Nurse Dave
Usually the minimum order is 100 coins. I saw one place that it was only 20, but their coins didn't look that hot. I leave coins as ftf in some of my caches and caches that I really appreciate. A nice out of the way hike, a really original placement...that type of thing. No way a little in town cache gets a metal coin, that's what cards and buttons are for. Quote Link to comment

globalgirl
Think sandblasting. The only problem would be the curved surface. Seriously, MA? Is there perhaps a relatively cheapo little hand engraver (much like a wood burning gizmo) that I might use to engrave the marbles myself? Perhaps not the "globalgirl" moniker (no doubt I'd make a scribbly mess of it), but... maybe just to number them - something even the custom marble folks aren't likely willing to do (leastwise on my budget). Even on a curved surface, shouldn't be too very hard to scribble a wee "023" or whatever. Anybody know where I might lay hands on such an engraving tool? Quote Link to comment
