Fergus
I was wondering if any people out there have ever gone looking for a geocache without a gps. A couple of times now I have printed a topo map and gone looking using just my compass and the map. I only pulled the GPS out if I could not find the cache. I know that there has to be people as crazy as me out there. Quote Link to comment
LordSaw
Removed comment as, after thinking about it I didn't want to hijack this thread. Will start a new one. Cache Well Edited October 30, 2004 by LordSaw Quote Link to comment
Touchstone
There's been various threads on the subject, and there are a few people that geocache "sans" GPS. Sounds like most of these individuals do alot of homework to get near the location (Topopmap, Arial photos, etc), and that seems to be good enough to find most caches. I've only done it on one occassion, and it was mostly because I screwed up my PQ's and didn't go out far enough to catch all the caches where I was going to be. I remembered reading about one paticular cache near where we were camping, so I decided to give it a shot. Sure enough, after about 20 minutes, we found it. It sure gave us a feeling of accomplishment Quote Link to comment
G'n,G
We found our first twenty caches that way. We used map quest for directions getting there, and topo zone for getting us to the cache. It's really fun to find caches that way. Quote Link to comment
Renegade Knight
My first cache was without a GPS. Every now and then I'll make an effort to find one without a GPS. Quote Link to comment
briansnat
I've tried it a few times. Actually found one twice. Two geocachers come to mind who do this regularly, Web-ling and Walden Run. Each has hundreds of finds sans GPS. Edited November 1, 2004 by briansnat Quote Link to comment

team kweb cakes
a caching friend artbegotti did almost all of his first 20 or so without a GPS. He uses various maps and then manually figures out possible areas. He's surprisingly pretty acurate. Quote Link to comment
