+rvroadbirds
I have a Sony laptop, windows 98 and a new Garmin Vista. I have downloaded the Groundspeak software and can see it on my computer. When I try and transfer to my GPS I am told it cannot access COM 1: which is the correct port. Any ideas, I am baffled. Quote Link to comment
+Prime Suspect
Could you have something else running that may have access to the port? PDA syncing software, etc? Are you sure it's the right port? Try downloading the latest OS release for the Vista from Garmin, and uloading it to your GPS (even though it's new, your OS is out of date). It can auto-detect the correct comm port. See if it finds comm 1. Quote Link to comment
DR Doolittle, the Mrs. & Zoo
This can be a tough problem... hang in there; eventually you will get it! COM1 and COM3 are often 'shared.' Do you have a modem? What COM port is it on? What SPEED do you have the GPS, COM1 and the software set to? They should match, as well as the other COM parameters. It is even possible your laptop has the COM turned off or otherwise disabled. Quote Link to comment
+DBleess
(Assuming the com1 port is active, installed properly and working under windows) Make sure your GPS is on. Make sure it is in GARMIN Interface mode (Page 52 of your manual) and it is securely connected by its data cable to your laptop. In easygps, select FILE - PREFERENCES and in the window that results, make sure you have eTREX vista, and Com1 selected. From GPS, test serial connection. If that still fails, post more information if you can. It may end up being a PC com1 config problem which isn't really the scope of this group but Sony may be able to help Quote Link to comment
Dale_Lynn
Some times comm1 is taken over by the IR port. You may have to disable the IR port to gain comm1. You may have to determine if the serial port you are connected to is comm1. Some laptops are hardwired only as comm2. Also if you have a modem in laptop it may have taken over comm1. You need a loop back plug in the comm port and to use a terminal program like Hyperterm (supplied with Windows) to open the comm port and do a loop around test. A loop around test is merely placing looping plug on comm port and typing (echo turned off). If you get characters in screen, loop around is ok, remove plug, if character stop you have the comm port number. You may have to open several ports (1 to 4) to find proper port. A looping plug is just plug that fits the comm port and pins 2 & 3 wired together. +jeff35080
Some times comm1 is taken over by the IR port I sure wish Magellan would add an IR port or Bluetooth to the Sportrak series that would really make it soooo easy to transfer data back and forth to my laptop without using a cable. Dale_Lynn
Even USB... It would solve the comm port problem. I was slow to accept the USB port/concept, but now am beginning to think for some applications its a good thing...
