bigredmed
Free CD distro of Ubuntu Linux (Debian). They will send them free in multiple copies. These might make cool swag or Event door prizes. (Found the link on slashdot.) http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ Quote Link to comment
Johnnie Stalkers
Only a true geek would even consider trading for an item like that. Where would you find a large group of Techno Geeks that would be interested? Oh, yea. That's us. Quote Link to comment
Marky
hehehe, he said Ubuntu. --Marky Quote Link to comment
Criminal
Does the fact that I have no idea what any of this is about mean that I'm not a geek, or that I'm just an idiot? Quote Link to comment
necron
i give all my 'slightly older' copies of linux away as soon as i upgrade. i often give the books that come with them too, as i never need them. Quote Link to comment
jeff35080
Wouldn't most newbies to Linux prefer to find a copy of Knoppix in a geocache? I'm a Red Hat guy myself who will soon be upgrading to Fedora... Linux rocks! Quote Link to comment
bigredmed
Wouldn't most newbies to Linux prefer to find a copy of Knoppix in a geocache? I'm a Red Hat guy myself who will soon be upgrading to Fedora... Linux rocks! This site is apparently aimed at novice users and will be a Debian install. I haven't got the disks yet so I don't know if they are bootable, but if they are, the site will send you multiple disks configured for i686, athlon, and powerpc chipsets. They say on their webpage that the shipping for one disk is almost as much as for 10, and if they send multiples, you have some to give away to others. (Sounds like they may know us ) Quote Link to comment
Bobthearch
You can download most Linux distros, including RedHat, Mandrake, Lycoris, etc. A good cache prize to leave for "computer nerds" would be one of the live CD distros - no need to install, boots and runs entirely from CD. Knoppix is the best-known of these distros. There're also many other operating systems that can be downloaded for free: BSD, QNX, BeOS, etc., etc. You guys have 'tripped' over one of my other hobbies. -Bob Quote Link to comment
dzdiver
I recently started giving away bootable Knoppix CD's. Great way for a person to try Linux without risk. Glad to hear that others are doing so. Quote Link to comment
as77
Let me add two other tips. http://www.damnsmalllinux.org provides a business-card size CD-ROM (which you can buy or burn yourself) with bootable Linux on it. It can be used with any computer, no installation necessary, just boot it and you have Linux up and running. http://www.metropipe.net/ProductsPVPM.shtml : Portable Virtual Privacy Machine: the same thing but the "dadgum small linux" running under an emulator, so it doesn't have to be booted. Linux will run in a window within Windows (can be enlarged to full screen as well). Can be carried around on a USB flash drive. Quote Link to comment
