Wilburii Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 I want to upload a photo to a new cache that I'm going to place shortly. It's important that the photo arrives on the site in the same state as when it left me. Does anyone know what the process is for uploading pictures (technically speaking not the physical one which is simple and straight forward). For example, do they all get compressed, or if I send a tiddler anyway will it get left alone? Don't ask why it needs to be sent "as is" - you'll (probably) understand when I put the cache up. Mind you, I'm not sure where to put it at the moment, I just haven't got quite the right spot yet. Jonathan Quote
Pharisee Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 I'm not sure exactly what you're intending but if you want to have a picture within the 'Long Description' area of a cache web page the you can specify the 'height' and 'width' of the displayed image in the html tag that specifies the image location. For example:- <IMG SRC="http://www.whatfunnyhat.com/images/wicked-lady-2.jpg" BORDER="0" WIDTH="310" HEIGHT="390" ALIGN="left" ALT="Wicked-Lady-2.jpg"> One thing to consider is that people view cache pages with different internet browsers and with screens set to different resolutions. A cache page that looks OK on a screen set to 1024 x 768 may not be ok when viewed on one set to 800 x 600. Quote
Wilburii Posted October 21, 2004 Author Posted October 21, 2004 Strangely it's not important what it looks like! It's the physical properties that are important. I suspect that I'll have to just give it a try and if it fails then I'll amend the cache to a more normal one. Jonathan Quote
Puppy Galore Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Well, according to the upload page, they only compress it if it is bigger than 125k or larger than 600 pixels across. Other than that, they leave it alone. However, I'd recommend that, if you want it to be EXACT, then you upload it to somewhere else, such as the free web space that probably comes with your internet access package, and then insert some HTML similar to Pharisee's example above to show it on the page. +Wilburii Posted October 21, 2004 Author Posted October 21, 2004 Thanks for that, I knew I'd read it somewhere I just couldn't remember where and then wandered round all the wrong places looking for it! I'll make sure it's less than 125K in size! Thanks for you help. Jonathan Quote
wildlifewriter Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Here's a tip: If you upload an image by the normal method, and then do all the above, it will appear in the long description BUT ALSO will be listed (with any captions) at the bottom of the page - before the logs section. I find this a bit untidy, especially if there are several images. To get round it, do the following. 1) Prepare the basic page, then view the result. 2) Log 'Post a note' for the cache yourself, and upload the desired image with the log. Repeat as necessary. 3) Go back in, view the log and select the image. Make sure you drill down to the original, not the thumbnail which might be resized. 4) Get the image properties, to use in Pharisee's method for inclusion above. 5) When satisfied, edit > delete the log entry. The log will disappear, leaving you with a 'clean' new cache page but the image will still be available on the server. I think this is because log images aren't actually deleted, they are "archived". +kbootb Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 I assume from Pharisee's posting that images that are within the html part are hosted on a remote server to which the cache placer has uploaded their picture. i.e. that is not the geocaching.com server. Therefore the autocompression for images over 125k does not come into play. (Not yet set a cache but come close twice) Quote
Z_Statman Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 What about images to the actual log entry. It says "Upload an image" but I find that each time I do this it is added to my Gallery. When I upload the same image to several different cache log entries then there are several copies of this same image in my gallery. Can this be done differently? I tried HTML in the log but it did not seem to work. Quote
DomHeknows Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 i've been wondering the same thing (probably for a similar reason) but never got round to implementing it - i think the remote hosting of the image is probably the best way round it. Also you can always upload a photo and delete it if it doesn't work. Quote
