GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife)

I am a newbie at this so excuse me if this is not the hardest question..

I am debating between .loc and gpx (i.e. paying the $30).  No I am not cheap, just like to know how the process works first of importing to my gps.

Anyway, I have imported the sample.gpx into gsak and I am exporting to my Mapsource so that I can customize the output before I sent to my gpsmap 76c.  I have everything working except "hint" .  I see the %hint, but is there a way to see the hint in gsak?  I ask because the %hint does not work on the sample data and I am not sure if it is not in the sample.gpx or if I am doing something wrong.  Plus it would be nice to be able to "edit" the hint for length, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

One thing about gpx files is they basically contain the whole cache page displayed on gc.com. The Garmin 76C does not really have enough display space to have all the information about the cache that I like to have with me when I go caching, therefore I use a Pocket PC based PDA with GPXSonar. I don't know anything about the Palm base PDA Geocaching Software but there similar programs. These allow you to see a version of the cache page in the field, including the hint.

Combining GSAK, GPXSonar and my 76C has been a good setup for me.

Hope this helps.

Cache Well

Lord Saw--

Thanks for the info -- I will investigate GPXSonar.

Clyde,

Quick feature request.

When I double click a file from Explorer to launch GSAK, I get the import dialog. It would be nice to be able to create a new database from that screen. I just got a bunch of waypoints that I want to process that aren't caches or BMs. I don't want to import those into my cache and BM databases, I want to create a new one. So, I had to cancel, create, and then import.

Thanks for the quick reply. My only question left -- can you "edit" the hint somewhere in gsak? Everything else worked great. By the way this program is really, really good.

Thanks for writing it.

No, but If you want to add your own comments then add a note to the cache (right mouse click, or via the main Waypoint menu, or CTRL-T)

User notes show up as the first log in the HTML view.

I will keep this one "under advisement"

One of the problems GSAK is facing is that many of the dialogs are starting to become too "busy".

I am not convinced (though user feedback may proove me wrong) that this would happen often enough by enough user to warrant such a change.

Acually...I was messing around with it and answered my own question.

I opened the database I wanted on the desktop, and set the user flags for every cache in the database.

I then went to File -> Export -> Gpx/Loc file and created a gpx to my desktop. I then emailed the gpx file (all the caches in my database) to my laptop.

Easier than I thought...

If you want an exact copy of your database, then the save and restore method (see post by Team Demp) is the better way to go

The problem with the export/import of a GPX file is that your Permanent delete list and corrected coordinates are not migrated. If these are not important to you then no problem, but I would still recommend the save/restore method.

ClydeE: I finally played with GSAK for a while and after seeing how good of a program it is I registered. Thanks for writing it. What programming language do you use to write it?

While setting up a GPS tonight I saw on the dialog that the Garmin 2610 wasn't currently supported . I'd be happy to work with you or Robert to get the 2610 added to supported GPSs. Feel free to contact me directly and I'll assist anyway that I can.

GSAK is written using Delphi 5

While setting up a GPS tonight I saw on the dialog that the Garmin 2610 wasn't currently supported

This is perhaps not 100% true. We have only had two reports with GSAK/GPSBabel and the 2610. One said it did work, one said it didn't. Please give it a try and let me know your results. We can take it from there.

Yep, we've had conflicting reports on success with 2610. We asked those guys to compare firemware versions, etc. but never heard back. It's unknown at this point how similar the failure is to the one reported by the one or two users of Quest so far. Neither the 2610 camp nor the Quest camp have really expressed much interest in working this through and the units are pricey enough we haven't exactly bought them for the project yet on behalf of the four (now five) users.

Offhand, I can think of two potential causes for failure and both will be icky to cure without ready access to a unit to source and development tools. Neither should involve rocket science, so I think a loan of a failing unit or remote debugging could bring joy relatively quickly if working with the right person. (Of course, Garmin consistently amazes me in the ways they can spank developers...)

Clyde, if there really is a problem I'll take this one. Zack, ring my bell directly.

ClydE & robertlipe,

I'll try GSAK with my 2610 later this afternoon and will contact Robert directly if I have any problems.

I see why folks say GSAK is a must have for geocaching. I spent about 1/2 an hour last night trying out the different arc and point filters and was able to create one that gave me all caches along the route from my house in Warner Robins, GA to our family condo on Myrtle Beach, SC. Next time someone asks about caches along a route I have the simple answer: GSAK.

I've been using GSAK for a short time and think it's great. However, until recently, I've created separate databases for different queries. I've since realized I don't have to do this.

What I don't understand how to do is if I have a database and then get a new query how do I get it to show a cache that has been found since the last query was loaded into the database?

I also don't understand the following 3 options:

- Database update option

- Found status update option and

- Delet files when finished

Not sure what should be checked. I did go to the help option, but can't seem to find it.

Thanks for your help

If you are a premium member of geocaching and loading pocket queries (GPX files) this will happen automatically.

Each of this items are explained in the help file. When you bring up the Load dialog, click on the help button. The help screen that now comes up has hot links, so just click on the item you want more information about.

The online help works the same (hot links) and you can view this section here

Thanks for your response. I didn't realize that the pocket query was doing it automatically. In the case I was looking at, the cache had not been found by anyone. The query I loaded was just caches I have not found. Well, I found this cache before the query was generated so it was not in the query, thus I guess it couldn't update in my database.

I found the stuff in the help file.

Thanks!!

I guess my next question was how do I then get my database updated. Is it easier to manually update, or request a pockey query with caches found and not found? Is one way better than the other?

Pocked query is the way to go. This makes sure you have the latest information for each cache from geocaching.com - you also get the latest logs.

Trying to update all this information manually really would be a pain.

Is there a way to customize the "HERE" link on the top of the GSAK cache page so that it displays all the logs on GC.com? Typically, I already have the last five logs for a cache, but I click on the "HERE" link to see the rest of the logs. I can't seem to find a place to customize this link.

By using custom URLs, I can do this, however to utilize custom URLs while viewing the GSAK cache page requires several mouse-clicks from the database screen, which is less convenient than clicking on GC.com a couple times to see all the logs.

You can't actually customize the "HERE" link, however there is a work around.

You sort of stumbled on it when you mentioned custom URL

If you prefix any custom URL (see the help file) name with a ! (exclamation mark) that URL will also appear as a link in any GSAK generated HTML page (This includes offline and split screen).

So just prefix your custom URL that goes to gc.com and displays more than 5 logs with a !, then you you can just click on that link in the page rather that the "HERE" link.

Not sure if this is a GSAK or Plucker question...

But yesterday I exported my first HTML file from GSAK and using Plucker sent it to my PDA. Note, I am almost completely inexperienced with paperless caching... I'm all new to this.

So far, I dig it. My first concern though is that all the cache text... logs, everything is centered on my PDA screen. I minor complaint, yes, but it's a bit annoying to try to read a cache description that is formatted like that.

My question. Can I change something within GSAK (or Plucker) so I get left-aligned text for the cache pages on my PDA?

One fairly common cause for this is bad HTML in one cache description. Finding the "offending" cache that's opened a tag and not properly closed it can be a bit of a chore. Once you find it, the best approach is to get the cache owner (or bribe your favorite admin) to fix the page and refetch the PQ or to just add that cache to your ignore list.

I've read about this quite a bit- but I'm not certain it is available yet, and if so how to do it.

I am traveling from Asheville, NC to Charleston, SC - all on Interstate 26. Is it possible to use points (in GSAK) to determine what caches are at rest stops or within .5 of the interstate.

If this is possible, how do I do it?

Thanks!

Yes, click on the arc/poly filter tab.

You will notice this dialog has 3 options arc/line, polygon, and points. Select points.

Now all you need to to is get you points entered (in your case the interstate rest stops) . You can enter them directly, but if you already have them in a file you can just click on the "load from file" button.

GSAK currently supports the following file types for "load from file":

Comma delimited text file (CSV), Tab delimited text file, GPX files, Street Atlas route files, MapSend files, MapSource files, and OziExplorer WPT files.

If you wanted all caches along the route (not just the rest stops) then select the arc option (see help file for more information)

Obviously you also need a GSAK database populated with caches that are in the vicinity of these points/highway.

Link to comment

Okay, but I only understand part of it. What exactly are the points- are they rest stop mile markers or what? How do I enter them directly? Where on the screen do I enter them?

You also said if I had it in a file, I could just load from file- how/where would I have gotten it in a file? I think I understand that if I had them in as CSV file, I could just load them- but, would I have manually entered them in an excel file and saved as a csv file? I guess most importantly, what are the points?

Sorry I've asked so many questions - it's a great program and I'm really trying to learn it!!

Thanks!

Okay, but I only understand part of it. What exactly are the points- are they rest stop mile markers or what?

Points are the same as waypoints. That is, the Latitude and longitude combination that defines that exact postion on the globe. So if we are talking about rest stops, you need the Latitude and Longitude combinations of all the rest stops in your route.

How do I enter them directly? Where on the screen do I enter them?

You enter them directly in the box that says "Arc/Polygon points" as shown in the picture below (I have included a few points) any line starting with # is a comment and is ignored. Please read the sample # comment lines for the formats supported for the Latitude and Longitude pairs (or click on the help button)

arcpoly1.png

You also said if I had it in a file, I could just load from file- how/where would I have gotten it in a file?

Internet, friend, or key up your own text file using notepad. It is up to you how you source your points for the arc/poly/poings filter. You need to come up with all the lat,lon pairs of your rest stops or route. Some mapping programs (MapSource and MapSend for example) will allow you create a route on the map and then save this route to a file. You could then use this route for an arc filter.

Use these coordinates for your points in GSAK:

35.55507, -82.61175 - this is where I-40 meets I-26 west of Asheville

32.79424, -79.94040 - this is downtown Charleston, SC

FWIW, I tried using points when plotting a trip down I-16 to I-95 to Hwy 358 in South Carolina using points but didnt' get too many caches. When I switched it to Arc and used the same coordinates I got what I wanted.

Good Luck!

Zack

P.S. While in Charleston if you find yourself downtown these 3 caches are close enough to walk to:

One with Nature

"STUMPED"

Washington Park

"STUMPED" alone, is worth a trip into downtown, IMO.

Do you live in Charleston? Southern Lit Primer looks like a really good cache- still trying to solve 3 of the clues.

Sorry, I don't want to come off sounding like the forum police, but this thread does seem to get large quickly so if we could keep the posts on topic it would be appreciated.

I looked at each and every HTML file from GSAK which had been loaded into my PDA. None of them (on viewing through IE) had an unclosed <CENTER> tag.

Then I sent to my PDA a GSAK HTML file with only two caches in it. Still, the text is all centered. Those two caches look to be fine.

Is this a GSAK issue or a Plucker issue?

I don't use plucker as I have a Pocket PC. The HTML shows correctly (though there is a "fit to screen" option that will change the behaviour of how it looks) and I have no other reports of this problem with GSAK generated HTML on either Desktop, Pocket PC or Palm (via Plucker or Isolo).

I suspect it is either a setting on your palm software using for view the HTML or in plucker - but this is speculation on my part. Perhaps some one else with a Palm and Plucker might like to offer their opinion.

After seeing Robert's post you might want to add some more points. If you have any difficulty figuring out points to add PM me and I'll send 'em.

I lived in Charleston in the early 80's before Uncle Sam shipped me to Iceland ;). We recently vistited there while on our way to Myrtle Beach, SC.

Good luck on your trip and let us know how it goes using GSAK to filter your caches along the route.

I don't see this in Plucker on my Palm. No cache that I've looked at is centered. I also use GSAK to make the html for Plucker, so I don't think it's a GSAK problem, nor a Plucker problem. Looking at the cache page, it appears that most of the page is centered. I think your problem is from the author of the page. Neither GSAK nor Plucker is going to change the layout - you need to complain to Canadian Bear, who apparently wrote it that way.

Thanks for the feedback. I was hoping to hear from someone else with a similar setup as mine.

You don't see this, eh? Very weird.

Well.. it's not just this particular cache. As I said, I checked a sample of caches exported by GSAK--six or so, and they all had the same extra tag.

I should add that this is before Plucker touches the files. This example is immediately after exporting from GSAK.

If you don't have this, and I do.. there must be some GSAK setting I have making it do this. I'll check and see if I can find anything. Hopefully Clyde can chime in with an easy explanation.

The center tags you refer to are generated by GSAK, but all they do is center the table - not the data inside the table.

The extra center tag does look a little strange but this should be cancelled by the following </center> tag anyway. Besides - this would still not explain why it only seems to be you that has this problem.

Just for a test, you could try removing the <center> tags one at a time from the HTML and see if it makes the difference - but if so. it still doesn't explain why this is not the case for everyone else.

BTW when you look at the same HTML in your browser on your desktop do you have the problem?

Is that really the entire HTML? It's missing closing tags for both one table and center. Plucker can indeed become unhappy about things like that, but I don't know if that's transcription error yet.

I may have tracked this down to the "Include current link at top of page" box. I suspect you have this box unhecked. Could you try checking that box and see if your HTML via plucker then comes out as it should. If so, then I think we have tracked down the problem.

I keep that box unchecked all the time, because that link does nothing for me on the Palm, and I don't see the problem on my device. As I said, the cache page he referred to has the text indented and centered, for some reason. If he's seeing this on every cache, then I'm out of ideas.

Enjoyed the puzzle. Construction has the east part of the loop closed, had to backtrack, but no big deal. You must have gotten a bulk deal on those containers.<img src="_tongue.gif">

Very neat cache CB. I have lived in Memphis all my life and have never been to the South Campus. I got a pretty nice tour of it this afternoon <img src="_smile.gif">. I rounded the campus to gather up the clues then found the clue. TFTCSL

Cool! I'm a senior at the UofM, or MSU for you old schoolers, and I've never been out to this place. Thanks Bear, this was number 100 for me. Nice looping tour of the South Campus of the University of Memphis. I am sure folks were wondering what that slow guy was up to. One more clue taken. SL... TFTC..

TerrierLady and I found this at 16:05. It was a gorgeous day, with a clear blue sky, soft air, moderate breeze and warm temperature. A nearby estate sale brought us past the South Campus where we had previously struck out with this cache. The new site seems to have a relatively low exposure to muggles. We enjoyed the hunt. Clyde,

On my PC browswer (IE 6) the page looks fine.

I removed only the center tag between <body> and <table bgcolor = "white" border=0 width=90%>.

This fixed the problem for that cache.

On another cache, I removed the <center> tag between <table bgcolor = "white" border=0 width=90%> and </center>.

This fixed the problem for that particular cache, too.

All other caches in Plucker remained globally centered.

Next, I deleted the "CACHE" folder from my computer and ran a new GSAK HTML export, this time with the "Include 'current details link' at top of page" box checked. I am back to all files being centered.

Even the new link to GC.com has the whole page centered. (from GC)

Hope this info helps figure out if there is a problem.

I've picked through that html. It's hard to blame Plucker here. There really IS an open enter tag that isn't closed and a table that isn't closed.

There are mismatched tag levels: <b><i>Take a Load Off</b></i> which can blow some parsers away. But I really thinkt he problem is with the open center and table tags.

Clyde, get Tidy and stare at its results. It's a handy tool for "seeing" this kind of stuff. By the bulk, much of below is it crying "wolf", but those first dozen lines seem pretty "real" to me. If you'd like to talk through how "serious" any of its belly-aching is, feel free to contact me.

Clyde,

You're gonna smack me.. maybe.

I went to the Plucker homepage and downloaded the latest version. With this new one, all is well. The cache pages are left-aligned like they should be.

Perhaps there was never any bug--except maybe in an old version of Plucker.

Thanks Robert. I have tracked down where GSAK is leaving these tags open and will fix. Perhaps a moot point, as the latest version of plucker doesn't seem to take issue with this - but it won't hurt to get it right.

Thanks for the tip in Tidy - it is a great utility :o I will see if I can address some of the other issue that are GSAK related, but others I can't do much about as the problem is already in the HTML provided in the GPX file.

Those are actually both cases I meant to mention. Those are kind of the rules of the file format game. It's hard to expect the thing downstream to behave well with malformed input and that certainly is the kind of thing that often varies from version to version, reader to reader, and so on. You're on the other end of the stick sometimes. There are a depressing number of cache pages with malformed HTML. (Which is the assumption I started with in this subthread.) I don't think it's GSAK's problem to save the world from that. For those, you just have to find the offending cache and get the owner to fix it or bribe a reviewer to do it. But I'm glad to see you're interested in not making the problem worse. :-)

Tidy rules. It's also nifty for converting between HTML standards and even to XHTML. For a big chunk of the web pages I write by hand, I'll usually scratch them up by hand and let tidy "fix" them.

Apologies if this has already been covered.

In my script, I bring in various files and then export my hitlist (all user flagged caches) to GPX. Then I use GPX to maplet to get that GPX into Mapopolis and put the GPX on my PDA.

I usually check a filter I've set up to identify new unfound, unflagged caches and click watch and user flag them. Then I re-export the hitlist. But it would be nice if this would happen automatically (watch and userflag all caches in a particular filter after the caches are loaded and before the hitlist export), so that my hitlist is always and automatically updated for these types of caches.

Is there already a way to do this in GSAK?

Thanks in advance,

Cade
