Jumbo Village
Hi, Looking to plant some smaller caches, and was wondering if anyone knew where I can get hold of something suitable in the UK. I think I'm looking for something like you used to get to store your key under the car, but maybe a fraction bigger. Any help you can give would be greatly greatly greatly appreciated! +Simply Paul
Do Halfords still sell them? Or your local dusty Indie car-parts & accessories dealer? The ones I saw in london were 35mm film holders with small circular magnets simply glued on the side with arodite, or similar. Seemed to work fine. SP Quote Link to comment
+Daisy&me
I use rare earth magnets from these people epoxied to either a 35mm film cassette or, for something smaller, a little box that Boots sell ear plugs in. Edited October 19, 2004 by Daisy&me Quote Link to comment
Leoness
These are designed for fly fishing but might be useful for a small cache box. Magnetic Box (You will need to scroll down the page to Magnetic Fly Boxes.) Edited October 19, 2004 by Leoness Quote Link to comment
+Pharisee
These are designed for fly fishing but might be useful for a small cache box. Magnetic Box (You will need to scroll down the page to Magnetic Fly Boxes.) I believe the magnets are on the inside of these boxes and intended to attract the steel fish hook. I doubt they will stick to a steel girder or the like. I've found one or two micros in the past that use the 'spare car key' magnetic box with a sliding lid. From memory, the log sheet in every one was wet. They are NOT waterproof by any stretch of the imagination. Much better to make your own. Magnets are readily available at just about any hardware shop and two part epoxy does the biz quite nicely. Quote Link to comment

Leoness
Is there never an end to the tallents of Leoness.... fly fishing now ! Well... it looks like maybe they won't work as a cache box anyway (see Pharisee's post). I have to confess, I have never been fly fishing, only angling with my father and brother when I was about 12!!! Quote Link to comment
+Simply Paul
While in London doing park caches I found one of these boxes and although it had an internal magnet it was stuck to a large metal object quite happily. The downside is it wasn't very waterproof either - plus it had been bright orange and had needed to be painted black to disguise it. SP Quote Link to comment
+mongoose39uk
I have placed one magnetic cache. It is an old handcream tub with the magnet of a corporate badge in. A previous reply willpoint you at the supplier. The magnet is very strong and it seems to be working quite well. Tony Quote Link to comment
+Learned Gerbil
Staples sell a range of magnets that can be glued to objects with bath sealant. Quote Link to comment
+kbootb
Quite a few of the London Micros are Listerine breath freshener strip boxes spray painted to match their surroundings, with a magnet epoxied to it. Not 100% waterproof but not too bad. Quote Link to comment
+John Stead
Listerine breath freshener strip boxes spray painted to match their surroundings, with a magnet epoxied to it. I have found quite a few of these in London and Wigan - about 50% had wet log sheets, some falling apart. Otherwise they are rather effective if not exposed to water. Quote Link to comment
+Learned Gerbil
The containers are not ideal, but the magenets attached by bath sealant works well. Note epoxy is too brittle so the magets seperate from the container. Bath sealant is waterproof and flexible. Edited October 19, 2004 by Learned Gerbil Quote Link to comment
+The Wombles
I use rare earth magnets INSIDE a 35mm film canister (glue the magnet to the base). It's waterproof, and the glue is not under stress or exposed to the elements. Oldest is two years and counting. Quote Link to comment
+kbootb
Someone at work was making signs to stick on the filing cabinets using magnetic paper. She was also making some using magnetic strips that were self adhesive. She got these from rapid electronics. Look here and here and err here and finally here and here for miniture magnets. I but with a bit of epoxy I could make something of a minature cache. Quote Link to comment
