+kph100 Posted October 17, 2004 Posted October 17, 2004 As a reasonably new but bitten cacher, one thing I find annoying is lack of maintaining of TB records. Firstly its annoying that they are taken from caches and not logged But far more concerning is that the TB owners dont seem to keep a check, ie on a number of cache pages its obvious that the TB which is showing there has not been there for ages..... so why dont the TB owners log it to say its lost... hence not misleading people and ensuring the cache has an accurate record of what TB is or arent there..... Do others find this weird, that people buy tags but then dont keep an eye on its exploits.... and looking at profiles this is true of active cachers.... Views please, and is there anything that can be done to solve the situation. Thks Ian. Quote
+minstrelcat Posted October 17, 2004 Posted October 17, 2004 I know what you mean - I went to a cache a while back where the TB went missing from it a while back. I e-mailed the TB owner about it but it's still logged as being in the cache. It's good practice to inform a TB owner if a TB is missing as they won't know it's missing unless they are checking up on their TBs - they won't get any sort of automated e-mail about it. Lisa Quote
+Brenin Tegeingl Posted October 17, 2004 Posted October 17, 2004 Is it a option only available to the cache owner, the option when you go to post a note on a cache which shows a TB, that you are given the option to place the bug in "unknown location". Only I've just had to do this with a TB in an event cache that I've just archived. If this option is open to everyone, who posts a find or note on a cache were a TB is missing, this would help sort out the problem if the first person to find the TB missing, used this option, and it still allows someone who has the bug and not logged it to grab it into their possession. +Team Hippo Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 On a recent visit to the Cotswolds, at no fewer than four of the caches I visited that contained TBs (according to the listings) I found that the TBs had been missing for some time, reported by finder after finder. Seems neither the cache owners or the TB owners are doing anything about the situation. Seemed very odd to me that this should be happening in a relatively small area, and surely is cause for concern. Quote
+wildlifewriter Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 (snip)Views please, and is there anything that can be done to solve the situation. There are (as always) a number of contributory reasons, I think. In no particular order... 1) Theft. 2) Finder doesn't realise it's a TB. (See also 5) 3) Finder DOES realise but doesn't know how travel bugs work, nor could care less. (See also 4) 4) Universal human stupidity. 5) The bug's tag is missing. 6) The TB was never in the cache in the first place, it was in some other cache. (See also 7) 7) Transient amnesia. 8) The bug isn't really missing, it's just at the bottom of the box covered by a glutinous mixture of brown rainwater, crushed sea shells and upside-down woodlice... Quote
+kph100 Posted October 19, 2004 Author Posted October 19, 2004 maybe you have a point about the upside down woodlice ....... maybe were talking conspiracy theories here ......lol Seriuosly thou there should be a way of archiving TBs once its been reported so many times on a log that the TB is not there as it appears some TB owners and cache owners arent monitoring there own caches/TBs. maybe this is something that can be taken forward ???? +harrogate hunters Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 As a cache owner I have just marked two as missing as per the new option on the TB page.... Nothing seemed to happen.... Does anyone know what this option does.... does it just send an e-mail to the owner ? Quote
+spioradsaor Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 Dont know about all this "big brother" stuff....Personally I welcome e-mails telling me that the TB has gone then I can get the TBRS into gear and sort it out. If its gone then I'll archive the thing...although sometimes its not gone just sitting on top of someones telly or in their pocket. etc etc I wouldnt be in favour of someone else attempting euthanasia on my own wee TB without my permission. Having said that i understand the frustration of heading out to find a TB and its gone. Then again they are restless little critters. Quote

Does anyone know what this option does.... does it just send an e-mail to the owner ? I did the same a while back after my cache was trashed. It should (and did for me) remove the bug from the cahce and change the status to "Unkown" The TB owner will also get the notification as they do with any logs for the TB Only cahce owners have this option to remove the Bug, so Dave you can do it and when someone does find the bug or want to log it, they still can. +68 GUNS Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Dave, with regard to the bug you changed to unknown. I brought that one to Snowdon but couldn't get anyone to take it on the day so left it in "Strait Down The Middle" GCDB1D. Unfortunately I forgot to make note of the Tracking No so couldn't log it out of Snowdon Easy or Hard. I've e-mailed the owner several times to get the No. but have had no response yet. So the next person to go to GCDB1D will get an extra surprise!! Quote
+Brenin Tegeingl Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Dave, with regard to the bug you changed to unknown I am very relieved to know that its not lost, and is safe in a cache. I ended up with several TBs, in the mad rush at the top, and thought that I might have had it and lost it. Dave Quote

I didn't know a cache owner could to that! Excellent - I have a bug that needs zapping from one of our caches. Lisa Quote
+1100f Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 I did a audit on my cache, Aerial View, after you posted that Fresian Cow was not in it. It looks like someone has taken the TB but the tag had come adrift, so although they logged it, they could not take it out on the web page( as they didn't have the ID number to do that). Somebody else had noticed a loose dog tag, but It is no longer in the cache, so I am hoping someone has picked it up and maybe the Tb and the dog tag can be reunited. Some how I feel kinda guilty that a Tb was lost in my cache! Quote
