holograph Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 I'm new to benchmark hunting, and I recently noticed that several benchmarks that are noted on a USGS topographic quad don't show up in a search of the NGS datasheets. I figure that they are destroyed or otherwise unpublishable. But I noticed that Bos Benchmark Education Geocache page has a link to an NGS datasheet for a destroyed mark, and I am curious about how it was obtained. Are those unpublishable datasheets available online? Quote

holograph Posted October 12, 2004 Author Posted October 12, 2004 Thanks, that link is quite helpful in understanding the annotations on the USGS maps. I'm still curious about how the unpublishable datasheet on Bos page was obtained? Quote
+Black Dog Trackers Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 holograph Posted on Oct 12 2004, 06:23 AM the unpublishable datasheet on Bos page Exactly what unpublishable datasheet are you referring to? I looked a little at that thread but don't see what PID you are referring to. Quote
holograph Posted October 12, 2004 Author Posted October 12, 2004 Bos message had a link to Benchmark Intro - Triangulation Station. Going to that page, there is a section titled "History of Triangulation Station Niceville" and the first paragraph discusses NICEVILLE Triangulation Station set in 1934. The sentence "Data sheet is hard to find but makes interesting reading" contains a link that takes you to a copy of the NGS datasheet NICEVILLE Reset (BG3383). Since I wondered why the sheet was hard to find, I visited the NGS website and did a search on BG3383, and got a "no marks found" error with a notation that the mark had been destroyed. That led me to believe that there was some other way to retrieve the datasheets for destroyed marks. However, I just went to the NGS site again, and I see that the PID query allows you to included destroyed marks, and when I check that option, the datasheet is retrieved. So I answered my own question, I think, at least as far as that datasheet goes. Will the PID search find any mark that has a PID, no matter what its status is? Do the archive downloads include the destroyed stations? Quote
+Muzikman Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 Go here http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_pid.prl enter the PID BG3383 and check the "Include Destroyed Marks." box. Then click on click the submit button. You will then see the mark listed. Highlight it and click "Get Datasheets" button. This will show you the datasheet for it. Basically that PID is in the NGS database. That being said, there are many BMs out there that are not in the database, and as far as I know there are no datasheets for these marks. Quote
mrh - terre haute Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 Here is another thread with a similar discussion re: a mark that I found. There appear to be many benchmarks shown on quad maps that were never entered into the NGS database. The information on these marks can be retrieved by contacting NGS and purchasing it (the data, not NGS). Benchmarking Thread Hope this helps. mrh - terre haute Quote
