+harrogate hunters
I was asked by a recent landlord, how many people are actively caching in the UK at present. Defined active as doing at least 2-3 caches per month. I could only give him stats on the numbers of visits to my boxes. Anyone know ? Where can I look it up ? Quote Link to comment
+Puppy Galore
Why, on the excellent g:uk site, of course http://stats.guk2.com/misc/uk_stats.php Edited to make the clicky link work Edited October 6, 2004 by Puppy Galore Quote Link to comment
+kbootb
I wrote an article on just this subject for geocaching today. It was published there but I'm danged if I can find it there now. On 1st September this year: 5757 registered cachers. 89 had placed caches but never found one! Only counting the 'finders' 1184 people have found a cache at some time but have not been active in the last three months. that leaves 4484 'active cachers. I looked in more detail. 1399 people have found only one cache. Of these 1148 did not find another in the next three months. Over 80% drop out 620 people have found 2 caches. 516 of these have not been active in last 3 months. I went through all the stats for this and found that if you look cumulatively at people that have found 1 - 10 caches this accounts for 70% of all cachers and of that 70% only 20% are 'active'. There is a huge drop out rate until you have hit 10, once over the 10 you appear to be hooked. Quote Link to comment

The article can be found here : Caching On?. I read it on Monday so had the link in my history. I'm sure I got to it from the News and Stories page but I can't see it listed now. We're not hooked - we can stop this at any time - honest we can - if we want to - really, we do have the willpower - we're not addicted at all - we'll stop now just to prove it - ok, maybe another 2 or 3 first just to prepare then we'll stop.... +wildlifewriter
I wrote an article on just this subject for geocaching today. I read KbootB's article a couple of days ago - and a dam' fine piece of work it is, too. Well written, lucid, informative, and interesting - and just consider how much work must have gone into the underlying analysis. This is a significant contribution to our understanding of how the hobby is developing. As such, perhaps Geocaching Today should give it extra exposure, and some prominence on the site. Good job, KbootB! Quote Link to comment
+rutson
I am not hooked.... ... having woken up at 3am for no aparent reason, going out caching at 4 was a PERFECTLY SENSIBLE thing to do, I even managed to resist the temptation to do 'just one more' and rish being late for work Managed seven though Quote Link to comment

Beer Monster
89 had placed caches but never found one! I can explain at least one of these. My brother (Moon-Watcher) and I collaborated to create the Centre of England cache for GeoRugby. As it was a joint effort we felt neither of us should be the sole owner so we set ourselves up with a shared account. It will only ever set up caches and launch TBs. Quote Link to comment
+kitmonster
Great article kbootb. Having only completed 7 in as many days, I've already started wondering what will happen when I've completed all the caches in my comfort zone! As ten is the magic number should I stop now - no I don't think so! Quote Link to comment
