Is that aluminum or stainless steel I wonder?

They are made out of Aluminum and are used for the remonumenting of Public Land Survey Corners while working on MDT projects. The acquiring of additional R/W for the state requires that all PLSS or section and quarter section corners be surveyed where the section lines cross the R/W lines. While surveying these corners, the Montana Dept. of Transportation requires the contracting Surveyor to perpetuate any corners which are considered sub-standard or in risk of being lost such as original stones which are suffering from the elements; or monuments which are below the current statute of monument size. Being a bar of 5/8" diameter or larger and a cap size of 2" or larger.

Also any lost corners must be replaced according to state statutes. MDT still uses these monuments and probably would be interested to know they are being sold on ebay. All it takes is a little peening to get the 199 off of the surface. I've put enough of these in the ground to know that I sure would not want to buy one on ebay.
