This Is A "found It", Right?

Personally, I'd call it a find - the effort was made, and through no fault of the cacher's, the object was denied.

I'd post a find and a note to have it repaired/archived.

I agree with a previous post that this is not justification for a find.

If this were appropriate I'd have 26 more finds to add to my tally where a container was missing before I got there. But I wouldn't feel good about those numbers.

...On a similer note I found a Cache out west, in Albuquerque, the cache was a small sign wired to a chain link fence, the sign flipped up and you signed (in magic marker) the rear of the sign. No cache book, and sort of a cache.  Now is that considered a cache? Also the sign was for a fencing company, did signing the rear of the sign make it vandalism?

One other point since we are disgussing right and wrong in a round about way. SeventhSon has a picture of Yosemite Sam posted, I hate to say this but good old Yosemite Sam is a copywritten image,  just ask Warner Bros.. The penalty for unauthorized use of a copywritten image is pretty severe, not to mention expensive. So, what do we do about that?

aka Gwynn

If they have permission or own the fence it's not vandalizm.

I've heard of cases where Day cares were sued by Disney for using Disney characters. Those were commercial business using Disney characters to modify their image to make money. Most avitars are non commercial and for the most part it ends there. I supposed Disney (or Warner Brothers) could make a huge issue out of it and get sue happy. But what would it gain them? Fans? The cost would be immense and they can't recover any profits because there were none.

ok, you'd have 26 more finds. I think you should have 26 more finds.

26 more finds won't stop Cialis adspam from ending up in your mailbox.

26 more finds won't change the upcoming presidential election.

26 more finds won't cure cancer.

26 more finds won't change the Earth's rotation.

26 more finds won't hurt anyone.

If you don't think you deserve the finds, that's cool. I think you do. You went out there - and someone else spoiled the fun either by stealing the cache or not archiving it. From my point of view, you've achieved the objective: to get out, find a nice spot somewhere that someone else chose and maybe get some exercise doing it. You had to spend time/money to get to the missing cache spot and search for the cache. I think you've earned it. This is different from just not looking hard enough and not finding the cache which is there to be found.

I don't know how many other finds you have. The missing cache thing has only happened to me twice out of 113 finds, so it's hardly a significant part of the total.

Fundamentally, a missing cache container is no different than a virtual cache.

So if we start sticking magnets randomly in the vicinity of where we actually find Micro's then everyone after that who finds the magnets can log a find on the actual cache whether they find the magnet or the cache itself? What if I place the magnets 50' from the actual cache? 100'? 200'? Since GPSs are so dead on accurate how can we be sure he was even in the actual area of the cache? I agree that given the circumstances it's highly likely but you can't be sure. (Especially when I start leaving magnets all over the world  ) I went past a park the other day, I'm sure there was a gc there can I log it? I've even seen pictures of it and can tell you exactly where it is in the park, does that count? I stopped and walked to where my GPS said it should be but didn't actually find the container, open it, and sign the log. Is that sufficient? I visited Niagra Falls 7 years ago, there's a cache there now, I'm sure I stood < 3' away from the spot and even have pics (7 yrs old) of the "cache location", good enough?

It's not a "find" because you didn't "find" it.

It's a "went" because you "went" to the spot. To bad there's no "went there" log type.

You won't find very many who will agree with your position on this. In fact, if you do log missing caches as a find I expect you will get some email from cache owners who disagree unless they are the unresponsive type or have gone inactive or just don't care.

If it happened with one of my caches I would request that the Find be changed to a DNF or Note. (Unless they tell me a good story – I love a good story)

Nope. A missing container is only a missing container. A cache owner might award you a find if you describe something that could only be known by visiting the site, of if you beg, or if you tell a good story. But then again, they might not.

edit: for sloppyness
