Handheld GPS units pick up signals from GPS satellites orbiting the earth. With the handheld unit and signals from at least 2 satellites (triangulation), you can determine your position (latitude/longitude) on the planet.

Civilian handheld units used to be accurate to only within a few hundred feet due to signal degredation (Selectvie Availability) applied by the U.S. military for national defense reasons. Last year, President Clinton gave the directive to turn off Selective Availability, thereby increasing the accuracy of civilian units to within 30 feet or so.

This prompted a local Portland man (Dave Ulmer) to invent Geocaching. He placed a 'cache' full of items at a location and took a reading on his GPS. He then posted the coordinates to an internet bulletin board and waited. Within a few days, someone had located his cache. Thus, Geocaching was born.

Now, thousands of people worldwide are playng this virtual game of hide & seek. Someone hides a cache and submits it's location to www.geocaching.com where others download the information and go hunting for the cache.

this topic seems to arise whenever a new area is starting up. let me pass on advice that was once given to me,....."if you stash it, they will come." i forget who it was that said this, but it is true.

To create one, simply fill a airtight/waterproof container with goodies and find a location you think others would enjoy visiting to hide it. Place it such that it can be found by those searching for it but also such that the casual passerby doesn't stumble upon it. Mark the coordinates of it's location, then post them along with information about the cache to geocaching.com. Then just wait. Sooner or later, someone in your area will find it!
