+PeachyPA
That is very interesting! We were at the Wright Bros. Memorial in August 2004 and the Bodie Island lighthouse in July 1995. Now I have something new to see at both places the next time we visit. Thanks for the info. Quote Link to comment

DaveD
The dedication was a great success. The North Carolina Society of Surveyors (NCSS) did a wonderful job of organization, including nicely catered refreshments. Speakers from the National Geodetic Survey, National Park Service, North Carolina Geodetic Survey, North Carolina DOT and NCSS dicussed the historical significant of both the Wright Brothers first flight and the Bodie Island Baseline measurment of 1848. The new mark, called First Flight has been observed by NGS/NCGS and the data is being processed at this time. Hopefully it will be published within the next month. To shown the differences in technology to the public we had a modern geodetic quality GPS receiver and a 60's vintage Wild T-4 astronomic theodolite on display. The T-4 was the standard for astronomic positioning for the better part of 30 years. Following the ceremony, some of the more hearty attendees drove south to Bodie Island and recovered the North Base Station. The National Park Serivce has been an excellent partner in helping make this a reality.
