geomike78 Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 I am an engineering teacher at a Southern California high school, and my advanced engineers are working to solve a GPS problem. If you can spare a couple of minutes, my class would like you to answer the questions below and send them to mmartin@king.rusd.k12.ca.us 1. When you hike with GPS, do you carry it around your neck, on your belt, in your hand, or none of the above? (if none of the above, please explain) 2. As per your above response, is it inconvenient or uncomfortable carrying your GPS that way? 3. Do you ever lose signal on your GPS while carrying it in the above manner? 4. Do you enter waypoints into your GPS while you hike? 5. Is it inconvenient to enter waypoints while carrying your GPS in the manner described above? Thanks for your help, and if you'll keep in touch, we'll let you know what we've come up with. Mike Martin King High School Engineering Riverside, CA mmartin@king.rusd.k12.ca.us Quote
+C&C+COMPANY Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 1. Carry it around my neck or in my hand. 2.depends if I have my dogs with me. Around the neck is good if they are and in my hand if they are not with me. 3.Not usually unless in the forest with tree coverage. 4.Sometimes, depending if I do Multi caches. 5. You kind of adapt to it. Quote

+BlueDeuce Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 What if I carry it in my hand as it's looped around my neck? Curse these surveys! Quote
+geobernd Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Also sent per email: 1. When you hike with GPS, do you carry it around your neck, on your belt, in your hand, or none of the above? (if none of the above, please explain) None of the above - I have a neck strap and a carabiner clip on the backpack. The GPS is attached to both, when I want to look at it I unclip it from the backpack. The neck strap prevents it from falling should I let go... 2. As per your above response, is it inconvenient or uncomfortable carrying your GPS that way? This works best (aber many hikes with different attempts). Absolutely comfortable - the key is to have a loop for the carabiner on the shoulder strap of the backpack. 3. Do you ever lose signal on your GPS while carrying it in the above manner? Only in heavy tree cover 4. Do you enter waypoints into your GPS while you hike? Yes 5. Is it inconvenient to enter waypoints while carrying your GPS in the manner described above? No Quote

Thanks for your help, and if you'll keep in touch, we'll let you know what we've come up with. Mike Martin King High School Engineering Riverside, CA mmartin@king.rusd.k12.ca.us 1. When just hiking I keep it in a pouch on my Camelbak, or my belt if I'm not wearing the pack. I purchased an ammo pouch at a military surplus store for the GPS. It fits the GPS just right, I can easily remove/attach it to my belt/pack/whatever, and it doesn't block the signal much. 2. Sometimes on my belt, the clips will dig into my waist, otherwise it's not uncomfortable. It can be a little inconvenient on the pack since I have to remove the pack to get to the GPS. Usually if I have it on the pack I don't intend to remove it, I'm just interested in getting the tracklog. 3. Sometimes, but rarely. Usually only in heavy tree cover. 4. It depends on the hike. Sometimes I'll take waypoints of interesting things that I intend to visit again, or potential cache hiding spots. 5. This is the same as #2. It's inconvenient only when it's on the pack. Quote
4x4van Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 1. None of the above. I have a pouch that attaches to my pack's shoulder strap, up high, just below the top of my shoulder. I will occasionally pull it out of the pouch (easy to access with one hand) and use it for navigating, then return it to the pouch. 2. It's extremely convenient and comfortable, and easy to access. 3. I very rarely, if ever, lose signal with it carried there. 4. I usually have all the needed waypoints already loaded before I head out the door, although I do mark the location where I park. 5. It's very easy to remove from the pouch with one hand for marking waypoints and to look at the screen for navigating. Quote
