+Team Rampant Lion Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 OK. Here's the story. Tick Magnets and I are in deep you know what with our wives. This time last year we were avid mountain bikers who were kidding ourselves that we could enter the US Open Downhill and 24 Hours of Allamuchy mountain bike races. We convinced our wives we needed top of the line mountain bikes to compete. We actually purchased GPS units in the first place to record and post our trail rides. The curse was a small ad for geocaching.com in my Magellan box. We checked it out and are hooked. So now, we are both much heavier and our 4-5 ride a week schedule has dwindled to 1 (maybe) . Needless to say our wives are pissed. Can you help us? We need bike routes where we can also geocache. We can do rough stuff as long as there is a trail and bikes are allowed. We've done all the Allamuchy Mountain caches on bike. Prefer loops in the 10-12 mile range. Anyone who knows of a park with a circuit, please let us know about it!
+HartClimbs Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 Can't help with the spousal relations - but I'd recommend checking out the biking near my Balderdash cache. There's easy biking, more challenging, (and nothing really as good as Allamuchy), but it's a place where I've gotten out on the bike for a good workout (and seems pretty popular with folks). There's no prolonged hill sections - but a couple steep parts - and plenty of options. Jumping off point is near Sunrise Lake (Lewis Morris Park) - good luck!
+avroair Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 Can't help you with the wife thing... I have problems with that too. You can actually log Balderdash straight from your computer. J/K I finished this marvelous cache last weekend and there were alot of bikers out. There is in fact a couple other geocaches along the Patriots trail. Sierra Bravo Foster Fields Patriots Path And a couple others I can't remember. Another geocache (multi) along bike paths is: Bergen County Parks You can also do my cache missions with a bike (if you can find the first stage that is! )
+Old Man Walking Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 I know all about the wife thing. [] There are a couple along the D&R Canal Path. That's easy biking. Good Luck!

One problem is that bikes are not allowed on many trails in NJ's state parks and forests and coungty parks, though you couldn't tell by the numbers of people out there riding illegally. They seem to think if they rip down the sign, then its OK. One place that comes to mind where bikes are allowed is certain sections of Ringwood Manor SP. Another is Delaware & Raritan Canal SP. Check with local cycling clubs for a list of legal areas. The Ramapo Valley Cycling Club is a good place to start. They are a responsible group who discourages illegal riding and is working with local and state officials to open more trails to mountain bikers.
+JMBella Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 (edited) I have your problem solved. Sell the bikes. BTW, I did the same thing. I was so positive I was going to love Mtn Biking I went out and bought a $1200 Kline. Used it a lot for several months. Now I use it to ride to the local Ice Cream parlor, sometimes. mortonfox Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 Head on over to Orange County and check out Goose Pond Mountain State Park. It's basically one dirt road you can bike from end to end and pick up all the caches along the way.
