+CompuCash
I have been reading many of these forums for a few months now and I have not yet read about anyone having a decoy cache as part of the hide. I think I have developed a new aspect for the hunt. I placed an altoids box with sand in it - inside lid says "This is not the cache - keep looking". This decoy was placed in a very obvious area someone would expect the cache to be. I have had good comments on it. Has anyone else done this? Quote Link to comment
+SixTen
I like that idea...it can serve to keep your GeoEgo in check. Quote Link to comment
+Robespierre
Some people use a fake pile of sticks, or rocks, just to make it interesting. Quote Link to comment
+IV_Warrior
I've noticed a "night cache" that had decoy reflectors/trails leading you no-where.... Quote Link to comment
+The Jester
I recently did a cache with some logs refering to a "this is not the cache" container. I didn't find that one, just the real cache. There is another multi in the area that has some false trails/red herrings. It's not common, but has been done. I think it's an 'interesting' idea... Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
Yes. I found the decoys, but never did find the dang cache. Quote Link to comment
AC Student
At least a couple of caches in my area feature decoys. Including this one It adds to the challenge and the fun. Quote Link to comment
+SerenityNow
We did several caches in Nashville, TN this summer that had decoys. It really added to the fun! Quote Link to comment
+JMBella
I've got one of those. Squealy has several like that and they're really good. Quote Link to comment
+Mudfrog
We have one put out as well. The main cache is an ammo can but near it are a couple of big pill bottles that arent hidden so well. They have a note inside stating "this is not it, keep looking". So far, most seem to have enjoyed that little aspect of the hunt! Quote Link to comment
+JohnnyVegas
I just set a cache like that last week http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...ab-b608c816a62c Quote Link to comment
+CompuCash
glad to hear that the decoy is bing used - thought it was a great idea! I have had some good comments on mine also - how is this for a devilish cache - hollow tree - upright - cache with decoy on top of it. Quote Link to comment
+art begotti
i thought you were supposed to slap people with red herrings... but yeah, it sounds like a decent idea... i guess... i mean, i am really demonic with the caches i plant (all one of them), but still... having a fake cache almost sounds... well, more demonic. its a good idea, until you're victimized. +Team GPSaxophone
I've noticed a "night cache" that had decoy reflectors/trails leading you no-where.... THat would be good for a "red pill/blue pill" cache Quote Link to comment
+Blaidd-Drwg
I did one like that today. My problem with it was that the red herring cache was where my GPSr read 0.00 feet, while the actual cache was 15 feet away. Quote Link to comment
Major Catastrophe
That's what I love about these forums: I can sit back, read, and learn all kinds of new varieties of deviousness. My goal is to place a cache that has people checking in for therapy after they try to find it... Quote Link to comment

+Team Perks
I own a "decoy" cache. I've seen several (including a couple multis) caches that employ decoys. Never seen a negative comment on mine or any of the others I've come across. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I've stacked a few piles of sticks near some of my caches as decoys. Haven't put a container under any of them though. Quote Link to comment

virgo91967
Yeah, i am good at red herrings myself... it helps to take advantage of the " where would I hide a cache" technique. Place the decoy in the most likely location near those coords. tee hee... My latest does have a huge red herring... a 30 ft sign with all sorts of electrical boxes and other nooks and crannies. While the actual cache is several feet away. "I KNOW the GPSr zeros out over there, but it MUST be wrong!" Quote Link to comment
+bigredmed
I have a cache cafe, where the cacher can choose to find a second micro or a second trad after finding the first micro. Quote Link to comment
ju66l3r
Two notes. I did a cache with a decoy...I found the first part of a multi and then went to the second part where I looked forever before looking in the right spot and finding the real cache. After I put the cache back, on my way out, about 30 feet away was a container exactly like part 1...which I thought was odd and so I stopped and opened it to find "This is not the cache, but you're close!" written on the paper inside. I didn't find the decoy until *after* I found the cache...lol. Second, I'm pretty sure that at some point I posted on here about an "easter egg" cache hunt, where there would be a square area (a few hundred by few hundred feet big). The coordinates would lead you to a special egg in the corner of the square. Inside would be a clue to where the next egg that leads you to the cache is. But with a slight ambiguity that would allow you to accidentally find one of the other eggs. There would be a few ways to write up the insides of the eggs (I'm thinking like 20-40 in all) such that some would even just lead you in a circle and others might lead you to the cache, but in a much longer way...and some would take you straight to it. Much like a Choose Your Own Adventure book (page 3 - if A, go to page 5...if B, go to page 7). Quote Link to comment
+Snoogans
I have a cache posted that uses several methods of decoy: Before You Can Torment, You Must Learn to Annoy. From the description: Oh, I left a ruse container (you'll know if you find it) and several false hides (the usual suspects) to taunt you. Quote Link to comment
+joefrog
I have been reading many of these forums for a few months now and I have not yet read about anyone having a decoy cache as part of the hide. Yep, I've done the decoy thing. I had one devilish hillside hide with several decoy piles of straw, one fake container. Lemme tell you, that cache site was ROTO-ROOTED before they found it! Also thought I was going to get strung up for it, LOL! Quote Link to comment
