+stu_and_sarah
515934N 0033943W N51deg 59.34' W3deg 39.43' or N51.5934deg W3.3943deg or N51deg 59' 34" W3deg 39' 43" I do wish people would make their coordinate systems clear. I realise it's probably QaotiQ, not the wobblies responsible for those numbers, but even so. Cheers, Stu Quote Link to comment
+wildlifewriter
Press Release: 1 Apr 2005 The Ministry of Defence has asked a private security agency to conduct tests of a new GPS jamming technology. The test will be carried out by DETHRO (the Defence Engineering Technology and something-beginning-with-H Research Organisation) which is privately owned by certain people. The project is expected to last ten years, and has a budget of £120,000,000 pounds (Sterling). DETHRO's Director of Bonkers Projects, Mike Taxhaven said: “It has long been known by people such as ramblers and geocachers, that the most effective barriers to the GPS satellite signal are, trees.” The agency plans to release layers of dead leaves (called “layers”) into the troposphere. The leaves will be carried into the air in a specially modified C130 Hercules aircraft which has been specially modified. The experiment has been criticised by Railtrack, who are worried that the wrong sort of leaves could land on railway lines, causing massive disruption. A Railtrack spokesman commented: “ It's our job to cause massive disruption – we don't need any help from DETHRO.” During Commons questions yesterday, Secretary of State, Geoff Loon said: “It is the policy of the Government to waste public money at every opportunity. I am confident that this new initiative will be a keystone benchmark point-of-reference soundbite in this continuing endeavour.” The Geocaching Association of Great Britain could not be contacted for a reaction. +Learned Gerbil
My experieince of caching near Boscombe Down airfield is that the MOD do a perfectly good job of ruining GPS reception without really trying. Quote Link to comment
