What's The Deal?

What's the deal with geocoins? I own five and three of them are missing... One of the coins (made by geotreasures) wasn't trackable, so I attached a bug tag to it. A cacher removed my coin and replaced it with some cheesey keychain. The other two (USA Geocoins) are simply MIA. Do people realize that these are to be treated like TBs?

If ya' find a kool looking coin, take a real good look at it. A great deal of these are just like Travel Bugs and someone forked out good money on em'.

I not trying to whine, but with a new baby in the house, my caching time is limited right now. So, I get a great deal of pleasure watching my bugs and coins travel the globe.

Ok...I feel better now.

Geo coins what to do? My husband and I are new to this geocaching so were having to learn some things for ourselves (or hints logged by others). Most Geocoins are not trackable through geocaching.com and have to be tracked through another source and that in it self creates problems. For instance, we found our first Geocoin but didn't know if it was trackable or not, but because it had a 3 digit number on it, we assumed it was a possiblity. However, the cacher's who dropped it in the cache we retrieved it from didn't log it (they were new to the game and didn't know how nor did they know they should have). I did a search on the net for Vacman and it brought up his web site and from there I was able to figure it out and helped the other cachers log it so we could retrieve it. If I were the owner of a Geocoin, I would at least have a URL on the coin, but better yet, I would have instructions attached to the coin so that the finder has an idea of what they are suppose to do with it when they take it. There will always be those who do not play the game fairly, but please remember there are some of us who want to do the right thing but the instructions are not clear as to what that is. Because of this topic we have decided we will not be buying any Geocoins (ecept for personal reasons) but will still do a couple of TB's as the guidelines are more easily understood for other cachers. I hope this helps and I wish you luck in retrieving your possessions.

I made the leap one day and purchased 5 USA Geocoins. I figured since they are trackable on this website they should have a pretty long life. Boy I was wrong. I have lost a few of them. I doubt I will ever buy them again. I think the "wow, it's cool and shiney" crowd just eats them.

This is what I'm talking about. I think it is pretty clear that, at least the USA coins, are trackable. The other coin I had stolen, which in itself was not trackable, at a TB tag attached... Not worth buying them anymore...

Geocoins are just too pretty - that's the problem with them. I picked up one this past weekend that was released in the pastic case and I've been admiring it all week. I will place it in a cache this weekend though. I plan to buy a couple of them but will most likely just carry it around in my pocket as a replacement for the POW/MIA challenge coin I carry now.

The thing is even with a TB you release it and hope for the best. The only coins that I have released are in a cache that I start, that way the FTF has some thing cool to find in the cache. If it goes any farther than that it's a bonus. I just ordered a group of personal wooden nickels that I will have tracked on TravelTags.com, other than some one just logging in and saying hey I'm the one that has this one, I don't care if they travel at all. If you have low expectations you won't be disappointed.

We released one coin and it never even made it out of the gate. Came up missing right away. Since then I have been leaving coins as a nice trade item for caches I really enjoyed.

If I come across a cache that has been neglected or needs maintenance I will leave a coin and challenge the next cacher to perform some maintenance in order to take the coin. Seems to work pretty well.

i personally have 3 usa geocoins traveling around, i think they are really cool! when i find a coin in a cache i love it, or if i see a coin is in a cache i will go out of my way to visit that cache.

i also have 7 geocachetreasure.com joy of geocaching coins i attached dog tags to traveling around, people seem to like them and with a hole drille din the coin and a tag attached i think they dont seem as collectible so people move them.

my 2 usa geocoins once gold and one silver are in plastic coin capsules, so im hoping they dont get "collected", i have 1 more silver toned one i havent registered or released yet, saving that one for a special cache. and i also have a antique usa geocoin i personally carry with me everywhere whether im caching or not, was in a capsule, but i dropped it and it broke, so now its just bare coin, i log it into and out of all the caches i visit to just log mileage a keep track of where ive been.

i really love geocaching since my first cache and travel bugs just enhance the fun of the game for me, thats why i have i think 17 tags out there now and 2 geocoins, and 8 more tags on my desk not made into anything yet..
