Goxtomaplet Name Change

I thought I saw something on this before and I didn't know what they were taking about. Today I tried to search and couldn't find the thread.

I used GPXtoMaplet so Mapopolis can tell me how to get to a GEOcache site without just guessing based on distance like I did before. Which is AWESOME.

However it lists them by names like "GCHGNB" insted of "Alliance by TedTerry".

Sure I can look for the title but only 3 at a time so that's a lot of button pressing to look for a title.

Also with Mapoplis can I sort them by how far away they are?

I think there is a program that lets you rename the files, but I'm not sure which one does it, or how to set it up.

Thanks again...

Use GPSBabel or GeoBuddy (GeoBuddy only works on .loc files).

Both will rename your waypoints and replacs the GXXXXX codes with the name of the cache.

GPSBabel seems to do a better job of piciking 'smarter' names than Geobuddy by the way.

I use GSAK. It uses GPSBabel, but it's easier to use, and does lots more. On the Palm, you can export caches to Mapopolis, but if you're using maplets, then you're probably using some flavor of PPC, and I can't help you much there. AFAIK Mapopolis doesn't do any sorting of any kind. You just give it an address or a name.

For more Mapopolis info, try the Mapopolis forum.

Thanx. The "Lipean naming scheme" has been entertaining to develop.

Having stared at a few thousand caches with GPSBabel's smart names for Magellans, I was pretty happy with them. Now that I've started at several hundred in the Garmin 60 (10 characters instead of 8, whitespace allowed, case insensitive) I have some ideas on how to make it better. I was thinking about it a fair amount this weekend. It's not high on my "todo" list, but maybe the next time insomnia hits...
