Garmin Quest - Euro Version Has More Memory?

Recommended Posts

I found this link to a U.K.-based company that claims that the Quest (at least the European version) will have 243 MB of map memory. If so, I wonder why they aren't offering that much memory in the U.S. version?

The page also has some nice screen shots of the unit as well. I really like the look of the Quests' "Trip Computer" screen.

Interesting...

I've been seeing this too.

Did a google search for the Garmin Quest, noticed a website with 243MB internal map memor, figured it was a typo, so did a second google on with "243" added and found several UK websites. (It's how I found this post).

I'm wondering if the base map has something to do with it....But that would mean the base map for US is considerably larger (by some 120MBs) then the European base map....

If the Quest came with about 512MB of loadable map memory, you could get the major cities in the US and Canada and some of the surrounding countryside....oh well, can't have everything. USB2.0 wouldn't hurt either....

I don't think the basemap is the issue and both units probably have a 13 MB basemap (US: 115 + 13 = 128 MB memory device; Eur.: 243 + 13 = 256 MB memory device).

It's probably based on what their marketing departments thought would sell in the two areas. Note that Europe has far more closely-spaced metropolitan areas so loading all the maps you might need for a typical 600-mile car trip would take more MBs in Europe than in most of the US.

About $765 without the VAT (almost $900 with it). Then you'd have to add the international shipping charge and also purchase City Select-NA since it would come with the European version.

Overall I think you're much better off either learning to live with 115 MB or choosing some other model of GPS receiver.

If you didn't care about the type of basemap, what would be the downside to getting the European version of the Quest?

You would be getting the European City Select maps with it, and would have to buy US City Select seperately. Add another bunch of dollar notes...
