want to load Version 2.11 or stick with 2.10?

3. Will the yellow eTrex be capable of displaying the new geocache icon(s) I've heard about on this forum page?

GREATLY appreciate any feedback.....

1. How do I enter waypoints into the unit?

Download and use the program EasyGPS to load waypoints into your eTrex. It works great and is very easy to use

Get the program at www.topografix.com icon_biggrin.gif

2. How do I determine what version of firmware is in in my unit?

Goto Main Menu/Set Up/System

Select Page/software version

Do I want to load Version 2.11 or stick with 2.10?

I always update to the latest version.

I use the eTrex Legend and one of the firmware updates included those icons - however, I'm not sure about the base yellow eTrex unit.

No. This is currently only available on the Vista, Legend, Venture & Marine.

Many thanks to those who replied to my questions. The information you provided will get me started, and after that it will be "learn by doing", which is part of the fun of this hobby - and participating in these forums of course.

Re: entering waypoints.

Someone already mentioned EasyGPS - But there is another way.

You can manually enter coordinates.

Hit Page button until you get to menu.

Use up and down buttons until you get to Mark. Hit Enter button. You should be on a highlighted OK?. Click down button. This gets you to the coordinates. Hit Enter button. Now you can hit enter and then up/down to edit any digit of your coordinates. I prefer decimal degrees (access units in setup menu). Using the data cable is preferable - especially for more than one waypoint. But for one waypoint manual is a reasonable method. BTW you can change the name of the waypoint via same method (go up from OK?).

Concerning, manually entering waypoints - while it is easier to simply upload them from your PC, it's important to know how to do this manually. Most multi-stage geocaches require you to be able to do to this "in the field".
