+Bonch
Since we're all presenting itineraries, here's mine: Wake up Friday between 9 and noon. Get in my car and drive to Jack's. Hang out reading or playing solitaire until I get a permit. Head up to Climbers Bivouac. I drive an Explorer with a REPO sticker. Just look for the Apeman. And it looks like I'll be solo from the Portland area, unless anyone needs a lift. Quote Link to comment
Jeremy
Thanks for the invite! However, since there were none available earlier I made plans with my brother to head up to Bandera Mountain. Have fun on your trip and I wish you the best weather conditions. Quote Link to comment
+Bull Moose
OK, still one permit available. I'll go back and check with people one at a time to see who gets it. Quote Link to comment

I plan on having foot on trail at 7AM, because I am slow and want 12 hrs of daylight. I'll be on FRS 2 for anyone who wants to catch up. Anyone not sure if they'll be at the trailhead before that who I'll have a permit for, let me know and we'll make arrangments. Quote Link to comment
+Bonch
If you are officially offering, I am officially accepting. I'll probably still head up to Jack's on Friday just to get acquainted with the whole volcano thing. Thank you! Quote Link to comment
nolenator
I will be caching the area then head to Jack's at 1700. I am still sleeping in Hotel Subaru at hikers bivouac. Peace, Nolenator Quote Link to comment
+Bonch
Well, now it looks like my wife will be coming after all. Problem is, she can't get away from work until 8PM Friday. If Nolenator can get a permit for her at Jack's that'd be swell! Hope I can find the trailhead in the dark... Quote Link to comment
nolenator
Bonch, I will get to Jack's in time to try and get an extra permit for you wife. Travis, I will see you there as well. Peace, Nolenator Quote Link to comment

+chubby forest monkey
Is anyone considering starting later than 7am? If everyone is starting at that time, I can get there by leaving my house at 4am. But if there is a later group, I would prefer to join that one, I am a fairly speedy hiker. Quote Link to comment
+travisl
Well, I'll be passing on Lone Fir (the inn is pretty much full) and will be sleeping, to paraphrase Nolenator, in the Jimmy Hotel. I'll be in the slow 7:00 a.m. group with my dad. I wouldn't be surprised if my brother and my friend Kevin sleep in and catch up with us later. Quote Link to comment
nolenator
Most of you know that I don't sleep in very well. Might just get an early start and see how the day goes. Anybody else want to start early? Peace, Nolenator Quote Link to comment
+Bull Moose
VERY IMPORTANT: Each person climbing must sign in and sign out of the register near Jack's. THIS IS A SEPERATE ISSUE FROM THE PERMITS!! Follow the link in the initial post of this thread for more information. Quote Link to comment
+Bull Moose
Also, anyone who I am holding a permit for and is not at the camp when I leave, I will place permits in a plastic bag and clip it under my windshield wipers. I don't really worry about anyone taking them at the camp. It's pretty remote. I will try to park the car out of the way. My car is a red Nissan Xterra, plate 975-RUX. Quote Link to comment

+EraSeek
Snow level will be just above 8000', which is what St Helens is. Just above 8000'. Acoording to forcast it will be around freezing on top and windy. Maybe some snow above, maybe some rain below. Bring wind(rain) protection! Pack some warm clothes you can layer up with. Don't forget sunglasses. Follow the posts on the ridge coming back down. Keep your GPS running to establish a track. Take a few waypoints along the way, especially on top of the first ridge at the base of the mountain proper where you cross over to go back down. Enjoy the hike. Quote Link to comment
+chubby forest monkey
I will try to get there by 7am. I will sign in at Jack's on the way in. +Bull Moose
Mt. St. Helens Cache Machine () was a success. It rained hard from about 6PM the 10th until about 4AM the 11th. Then it stopped and didn't rain the whole day! Had a lot of wind and clouds blowing in and out, but we got "above the clouds" and saw Rainier, Adams, and Hood and had a good view into the crater. Some of us made it further than others. I made it to the top after giving up with about 1/3 mile to go. Shunra spotted me on the way down and demanded I turn around and go up with him, cold hands, sore ankles or any other excuse. Thanks Shunra, it was worth it. It was good meeting everyone that I met for the first time today, and Nolenator, always good seeing you, despite missing your kite flying at the rim. Quote Link to comment

nolenator
Truely amazing day considering that the weather just pounded us the night before. One of the guys in TravisL's group was sleeping (sort of) in a hammock under a blue tarp. I never really got the kite up. As I was reeling out the line (way too much), the wind died and sent it over the rim and rapped the lines around a couple of big rocks. It was the thought that counts I guess. I got give the big hat tip to Bonch for lugging up a nice bottle of red wine so we could have a toast at the top. Bull Moose, thanks again! Shunra, double peace signs to you! +Bull Moose
I should add that I had to use my GPS for navigation. There's a novel use, hah? Right away I got off track looking for an easier way up the boulder field and realized I had no idea where I was. Luckily, I had Moun10Bikes track and followed it back to Crossover 1 until I could see the posts again. Quote Link to comment

Yes, way to go Shunra! Good job Bull Moose! It was great. Buill Moose was a pleasure to hike with, and he looked out for me on the way down, when I slipped twice and was getting worried about getting down in one piece. Travis, loved your log. It may take a while until I'l log my finds of this trip. For the record: Tolmaus and I share an FTF on nearby Plains of Abraham. That was a 9 mile roundtrip hike on Friday, and as a result she decided not to join the trek to Above the Clouds on Saturday. At about 10 am she decided at least to make it to the cache, if not to the summit, but she hurt her ankle 0.4 mile from the cache and had to return, a la Eraseek from Mt. Pilchuk. It was great meeting you all. Sorry we missed the kite and the wine, and more chances to get to know the fast ones among you. I hope there will be other chances. Quote Link to comment

+evergreenhiker!
I hope there will be other chances. Well... I do plan on tacking that peak. My old stomping grounds happen to be the Gifford Pinchot National forest area and Trout Lake. Too bad a box wasn't placed up there, but the climb itself would be reward enough. I know people go up in Tennies but that's crazy!!! Better treat it like a mountain. Quote Link to comment

I know people go up in Tennies but that's crazy!!! Better treat it like a mountain. I've been up Adams a couple of times. I camp a about 8000'. Lower part of the lunch counter. Get up, take off at 5am. Get you on top about noon or so as I recall. I recommend ice axe and crampons. It's a cool hike. It is high. You may feel sick from the altitude. On the false summit you can see where lightning struck. On the false summit you'll look up and say "Wow! I got another mountain to climb!" Non-technical, steep, high, great view, awesome slide down, but be careful. I may go myself again. Quote Link to comment

Moun10Bike
I climbed Mt. Adams in September of 1996. We camped at the base at Cold Creek Campground and departed at 8:00 AM. We summited and descended in one day, which I would not want to do again - 8,000 feet of elevation gain and 12 hours made for quite a haul. We ended up returning in the dark because we made a wrong turn near the bottom and descended the wrong snowfield, which caused us to have to climb back up about 500 feet to get on the right path (one reason I always run with GPS now!). I would recommend camping at Lunch Counter like EraSeek mentions. Also, take plenty of water - we had a warm late summer day and ran out way too early. Quote Link to comment
