Unless you like long bumpy roads fs 2220 is not the one to take.

Take 101 north from Hoquim, after you pass the Promised Land Park , take the next right. It is fs 22 or as the sign says Donkey creek road. After 4-6 miles ( don't hold me to this, I hardly ever check mileage) the road will change to one lane. Turn left here on fs road 2302, another 2 lane road here you will find a few miles of open straight road to blow the carbon out of your exhaust. This road will drop to one lane and become a gravel road. after you cross the bridge over the humptulips gorge ( there are two caches there) veer right and you are on the home stretch to the trail , about 8 more miles.

This was from info on a 1974 Green Trails map. I is wrong now.

2302 road ins now called 2204.

All the rest of the info is correct.

There are 11 spots at campbell tree, but there are a couple of turnouts without fire rings or tables there too.

I've been on this hike many, many years ago with Ironman114. I really like it out there.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make it this time. Ironman is concerned I'll have a asthma attack on the trail (very allergic to cedar) and my meds sometimes won't help with a bad attack. I'll send Ironman with the camera so he can get pictures for me. He's good at that.

It would of been nice meeting everyone.

Well it looks like my participation just came under the gun. My sister called and said they might get their city contract to pre-treat Elm trees against Dutch Elm's desease and they'll be starting on Friday if they do. I'll let you know as soon as I know for sure.

Well it's been confirmed. She won the contract, so we have about 75 trees to treat starting Friday morning. Good for me I have a job to supplement my meager self-employed income bad for me I can't go on the hike.

I hope y'all have fun out there!

So what's the tally now?

My brother and I would still go at this point. If we get too many folks bowing out on the trip, I think I'd do the Gem Lake hike instead.

I'm sad to say that my caching plans are shelved until at least Friday. I had intended to make it a three-day weekend to that area, but a load of work has come in that I need to deal with. Sorry to say: it doesn't look like I'll make it.

Here are some maps and GPS data of the hike for wanyone who wants to use them. Criminal graciously supplied me with the GPS data. He didn't have the best of signal along the hike, so I had to do some major reconstruction on the track in order to get it to work - in other words, use with caution! <_< (Also, if anyone making the hike Saturday records more track data, I'd love to get a copy so that I can improve the map!)

Just so I have the story straight: The bridge on 2204 that the pdf shows as closed is now open?

I don't have a green trails map so I am not sure which road is which. The directions on the FS page (link from the cache page) will get you there. Those directions say that the bridge along road 22 is out. I called and confirmed that it is open again. My V routed me there with no difficulty even when I passed Road 22. Small taters! We'll make it!

TL, grinding teeth? Are you not coming? I haven't heard that Leatherman is not coming, I know they let him out of prison on Saturdays, so I expect we'll see him there. I still am unsure if I will seep at the TH or just get up really early and drive down.

BTW, the road I took, 2220(?) was possibly the best FS road I've ever driven. I could have maintained 50+ the whole way, slinging the @ss end of the truck around the corners and spraying gravel far into the forest. Patch might not have like that, and there are blind corners B)

OK, I see the problem. They say 22 bridge is out, but on their little thumbnail map they show it being 2204. I think that means the bridge should be open that they show closed, per your call.

Anyway. If I come to a bridge that's not there, I'll test the Dukes of Hazard juping ability of a Nissan Xterra or turn around and come back the other way. No biggie.

I too am debating between camping and getting up at 0-dark-hundred. They both have their plusses and minuses. A campfire sounds nice, though. And maybe a DVD on the laptop...

So is everyone driving in early?

I'm not gunna. I'm going to enjoy some Wild Turkey and watch some DVDs on my Panisonic player. Be sure to wake me up when you get there.

Pepper's coming too. She doesn't have impulse control problems around shear cliffs. B)

Yup. I'm not coming. I got a call earlier this week from my sister that the city awarded the dutch elm's disease preventative treatment to her and she offered me the job of grunt. It's 4 weeks straight and we started this morning. We have 51 trees to treat.

See now, if y'all were local this is how the directions would be given:

Turn onto Donkey Creek Road about three miles north of Humptulips (which everyone already knows is way the hell up 101). Follow until the road narrows (at the posted speed, mind you. Since you aren't a woman, the odds that you will not get a ticket are much slimmer than mine were.) Then turn onto forest service road 2204. Follow your GPSr to the Humptulips gorge bridge (N47*22.728 W123*47.668). On the far side of the bridge veer right for however many miles it is to your chosen destination.

Looking forward to meeting y'all on Saturday!

DVD players, radios, and the like go to the campground.

No picnic table but there is a can in case you are one of those sit-to-pee types.  It's a parking lot, nothing more.

I think we should set up a screen out there in the parking lot and show movies. :D

Don't worry, Criminal, if I do bring my laptop (doubtful) and watch a DVD on it, it'll be in the confines of my car and you'll never know.

Just wondering about the trailhead, because occasionally there'll be a picnic table at trailheads. I'm just trying to figure out where to set up my stove for brefixt.

I'm a bit sore, and Chewie may not wake up for days, but we made it there and back.

I'm trying to put pictures up on the cache page but the site isn't cooperating.

Nice meeting everyone: Criminal, Leatherman, CurmudgeonlyGal, ironman114, and Mike - who escorted Chewie on front guard.

This was my first hike with other cachers and I look forward to doing it again soon. Maybe even on a day where the view will be more than a cloud bank...

Wow! What a fabulous day with four... er, FIVE incredibly hunky men. I'm not sure a girl could have better company in the forest.

Well, it would have been better if TotemLake had been there... altho we weren't too happy with him at about 8:30 when it was looking like we were doomed to crappy weather for the duration. We got over it right quick, tho. I'm still disappointed you weren't able to join us TotemLake. It was the only downside to an otherwise great day.

The last mile was the easiest for me even though it looks like it had the largest gain (1000' gain) in the shortest amount of space. More climbing + less switching = less coughing for me.

Loved the whole FRS gig. We've used them in the past (cache machines for the most part), but this is where they really shine. Even if you're alone somewhere along the line, the banter makes you feel less isolated if you need to touch base. I liked being able to cough in private, thankyouverymuch, but enjoyed hearing where and how everyone else was.

Nary a lick of trubba or soreness. I did take a pretty good tumble on one of the wet logs as I was approaching a big, wet rock (anyone who's cached with me will probably not be surprised at this) and am waiting for the big ugly bruise to show up. I am almost disappointed it was missed by all and sundry. Nothing like a bit of a** kicking to bolster the collective spirit.

Hoping to meet up with any, and all of you on the trail again.

Well It's Sunday in the P.M. and now the stiffness is setting in. The hike went real well for me considering I did the same hike last week. But now I fear I am going to hurt much more. I am not looking forward to going down those 49 steps at work tomorrow. Oh well it could be worse, I could be working at another dadgum that has no elevator and you walk down steps for about 700 feet with no landings to rest on.

Thanks Criminal that was sooo refreshing tofind at the end of the journey!!!
