+Bob&TheGang Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I want to build a cache container that looks like a rock. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can do this? - Bobkat92 & the 3 Bears "To me, Geocaching is the thrill of the hunt and going to neat places (you might not go otherwise); its NOT what you actually find in a cache." +Mr. 0 Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I got bored and made a rock a few months ago. I haven't placed it yet, so it's just sitting in the garage. What I did is take some chicken wire and bent it into something that looked like a bowl. I then lined it with wax paper. I had previously purchased a bag of quickcrete (or whatever brand) concrete mix..I think it was like $5 for an 80lb bag. I mixed a little of the concrete up and dumped it into the mold. I then took a 35mm film canister, wrapped it with wax paper, and stuck it down into the concrete so only the lid was sticking out. I let that dry for a couple of days then removed the wax paper and chicken wire. I mixed up a little more concrete and added some red food coloring to the mix to give it something other than a grey color (it ended up being a light brownish color). I covered the top of the "rock" with that concrete, because I noticed that you could see lines or creases where the concrete molded around the chicken wire...so it didn't look natural like that. I basically wanted to fill in the voids and smooth it out some.. I also took and put a piece of velcro on the bottom of the film can, and inside the "rock" to keep it in place. EDIT: If I remember I'll post some pics when I get home. Mr. 0 "Remember that nature and the elements are neither your friend or your enemy - they are actually disinterested." Aksor+Raskol Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Oh, sure! And then hide it in a rock quary! They don't have difficulty ratings that high! Now I could kick myself for not thinking of it first!!! Seriously it sounds like a great idea and I was just thinking about using a "native" rock and somehow using carbide bits, etc. to hollow out a depression to get a micro into. Quote
Aksor+Raskol Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Sandstone would be the logical choice, but all the rock around here is granite. Bummer. Lava is soft. Guess I need to move to Hawaii. Quote
+GPS_Brian Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Do some searches on Hypertufa. I've been thinking about using this as a basis for a cache but haven't had the time to try it yet. In a nutshell, there are several ways to mix it but it basically is comprised of portland cement, water, and a filler such as peat moss. It can be easily worked and formed, depending on mix, has a reasonable rock appearance, and is MUCH lighter than concrete (cement/gravel). It can be done (with a few tricks) light enough that you could easily form a rock substantial enough to conceal an ammo box. And if you use peat moss it will also quite readily develop a moss covering adding to its naturalized appearance. quote:Originally posted by Bobkat92 & the 3 Bears:I want to build a cache container that looks like a rock. +Mark 42 Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Spray foam (insulation) might work well. Hafta paint it perhaps? Also, look at this link: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=How+to+make+artificial+rocks&btnG=Google+Search Quote

Around here we have a bridge that spans one of the city's trails... on each side where the land meets the bridge, there's a slope completely covered in white rocks... i would *LOVE* to put a cache there... And the best part?? Unless someone decides to steal the rocks for a garden planter, the cache won't get taken by someone who wants to ruin it. Quote

+leatherman Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Here's a cool insulation foam container I found. It was painted with flat wood and moss colored paint. It also had some twigs and bark stuck in it before it dried. I'm sure if you daubed the surface with a wisk broom, for texture, and painted it with granite speckled paint it would look just like a rock. Pepper playing nice! Mokita! Quote
+sept1c_tank Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I spent the $15 and bought a Groundspeak rock (charcoal). It's been placed for 5 weeks now, within an arm's reach of a park bench. It's in plain sight and not near any other rocks. It's big enough for small trading items. Mine is a theme cache involving coins. It also has a log and a pencil in it. I have about 15 entries into the log with some really good comments. Here is the cache page. ==============="If it feels good...do it"================ **(the other 9 out of 10 voices in my head say: "Don't do it.")** . Quote
+evergreenhiker! Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I'm going to try to make some with polymer clay. Sometimes I'll go to hand me down shops to look for anything that might be used...foudn some egg holders which might make a good frame for making a rock. Quote

+Renegade Knight Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 Spray foam insulation looks good (like concrete) if painted right but it doesn't hold up at all. What would it take to just drill a Film Canister diameter hole in Basalt? Or Granite? Quote

On the YCM in late March, we had a heck of time looking for a box...took a large group of people 15 minutes to find teh dadgum thing. It was a good size rock that had a cavity drilled out and a smaller tupperware container glued to that. Great job and the rock is the real thing! We all crawled all over it until Misguided One finally found it. Quote

+fly46 Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 I'm afraid of that too, that's part of the reason that I haven't done mine yet... But, you know... If my cache ends up decorating someone's front yard, oh well! Quote
