Took the plunge and from what I have seen it was a goo 75.00 upgrade. The roads in our foothills above Boise, Idaho that were not there in the previous version have arrived on the scene. Also the new resturants are present... Nice job to Garmin again!!!

I agree, even in a little city like Roswell, NM, many good changes have been made.

I use my GPS V and GPSMAP 60c for business travel in the midwest and decided not to spend the $75 to upgrade. Only problem I encounter is the relocation of Hwy 10 and Hwy 45 across central Wisconsin but otherwise the old one suits me well. When I have the money and no bills to put it towards, I'll buy it for myself as a present.

Unlock allows you to unlock for 2 units. If you unlocked 5, in order to unlock 6 you need to "upgrade" to v6. That will give you two unlocks on v6. Depending on when you unlocked v5, it will be either $75 or free to unlock v6, though some reported working out a better deal calling Garmin and getting the $75 fee lowered a bit.

Link to comment

Personally, I think that fee should be lowered a bit for current customers. Ever since my wife and I started geocaching and bought a Garmin V, we've must have influenced at least 10 friends to buy Garmins (rinos, legends, streetpilots and V).

My wife is a teacher and even won a grant for her school recently for 2500 dollars to be spent on GPS's to teach geocaching, gps, etc to her gifted middle school classes. Most of it was spent on buying Rinos.

Be nice if Garmin would make things easier on its loyal customers. What's with all these deals people are talking about? Does it pay to call them up and talk about stuff like this?

MapSource is a program and that's what you updated to v6.3. MapSource updates are (have been) free.

Data updates are what is being discussed. They are the City Select, City Navigator, Topo, etc data products. Those products require a fee (in most cases) to update to the latest data.

So you updated your program for free but you are accessing the same data. If you want to get updated data, you need to request the CD (no charge) and purchase the unlock code for it.

Ok...I follow you....

I just found the place on the site and ordered my update disk.

I would agree, though, that $75 is a bit high, considering that there are so many errors in the v5 maps, at least around my area....

But I guess it will be worth having the new data.......Hopefully it will be worth it.....

$75 dollar bills are hard to come by these days....

With a street price of $120 for a new package, $75 for an update doesn't seem like much of a favor.

Agreed!

I really dont have an extra $75 just laying around but I am bankig on them having done major fixes to all the errors that were in there.....If I get it and my street is STILL reversed numerically, though, I may go off... I had reported that problem a year ago.....

I have copied the email thread between myself and Garmin below...if interested...

*****************************

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. $75 is the price to update

the maps. The cost is less then it would be if you went to a dealer and

purchased the version 6 maps. Our maps are made by a third party company. We

are charged to have the maps done and unfortunately must pass that charge

along.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to respond to this email

or call Garmin.

Thanks Scott.....

Is it pretty much a flat $75 upgrade cost??

Like I said, I just bought this thing less than a year ago and the software

currently, quite honestly, seems to have quite a few errors in it......$75

is a little steep to get maps that have the correct info....

Thanks in advance (again)....

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. When you downloaded Mapsource

v 6.3 off of the internet you updated how the program works on your PC. This

did not update the maps. The updates for the maps are on a CD that you must

order. I have included a link to our site where you can place the order for

the update CD.

Inquiry:

Hello...

I am hoping for some help....

About a year ago (maybe just under a year....10 months?) I bought a Garmin

V....it came with City Select v5 and the full unlock upgrade.

I have been very happy in general but found that the data on the maps was

outdated and incorrect in some instances....for instance, the street numbers

on my street are all reversed....in one neighborhood, I was routed to a

treet that couldnt have existed, as it would have taken me over a cliff....

So, I have been waiting for map updates.

I understand that City Select v6 is now available. I downloaded the v6

software update on the Garmin site....it seems like the software updated but

the maps didn't....

Can you advise what I need to do to get the updated maps???

Thanks in advance....

I have City Select v6 installed. If there's anything specific you want me to report back on, let me know and I'll give it a go.

If you don't want to do it publicly, you can message me or email me.

If you got your GPS pretty recently and purchase CS 5, Garmin may cut you a break even if you fall outside of the purchase windows on the website. I purchased my 60cs when they first came out and was able to purchase the 6 update for $37.50.

This was offered to me by a Garmin rep while I was asking questions about CS 6 (I didn't ask for the discount).

Link to comment

It won't do it automatically. email Garmin tech support, telling them when you purchased v5. I purchased v5 about the same time you did. Garmin told me to order the update cd, then email them when I got it. I did, and they gave me a 25 digit code within 10 minutes for v6, at no cost.

If your unlock date for 5 is 6/16 or later, it'll automatically unlock for free. Thankfully mine was 6/17 . I had emailed garmin about it, and they did say since I was close that if the system didn't register doing it for free to give them a call and they'd give it to me free anyways, so if you're close to the 6/16 date, I'd definitely talk to the garmin people.

I called Garmin and explained I purchased my 5. version on May26th and asked what an upgrade would cost. The rep said thats close enough to the release date and gave me an un-lock code and is sending the disk for $0.00. :P Hows that for service? I am a long time Garmin user and couldn't be happier.

Thanks for the info pitchblende. I called Garmin about getting an unlock code (I already had the disk) and the rep was going to charge $75. When I told him I had heard of someone who paid $37.50 that bought version 5 when the 60cs first came out like I did, he asked for my GPS serial number. After looking up the SN, he said I could get the unlock code for half price. Cool!

First off, let me say I am a long time Garmin customer and think they are a great company but their software division is trying my patients. And it is all over locked software!

I purchased my first Garmin, a GPS III in 1998. I have sent it in twice for software upgrades and new parts. $99 a wack and they replaced darn near everything the first time and just the buttons and scratched screen the second time. For the last year I have been using an Etrex and it has been great. So naturally I wanted and bought the 60cs. Of course I needed a real map so I went to these forums and then to Garmin.

I emailed them in early July and asked, 'If I order N/A City Select, which version will I recieve?' They said, 'IF YOU ORDER FROM US, YOU WILL RECEIVE V6.' I ordered it from them the next day. Well, you guessed it, I received V5. I unlocked it (using one of my unlock codes) for my 60cs. I emailed them and asked what gives with my receiving v5. They said, oh, our problem, we will ship you v6 free. I said great, please send me TWO unlock codes too. I received v6 UPDATE (not a clean v6 cd) and did the update. I tried to unlock v6 to the 60cs, no go, said that unlock code was already used. Next I went online and got another unlock code. That worked and I as able to download the detail maps from v6. Of course now they tell me I have used my two unlock codes.

So, they didn't ship me a clean V6 CD, I got an update. Now they emailed bach that they don't see how it is their error that I have used both unlock codes. Like I said, they have a great hardware product, it is just their software folks who are lost.

Thanks for listening.

So You unlocked the same exact unit twice ?

one with v5 another with v6 ?

I think you should have red instruction before doing second unlock.

BTW, thanks for the information I think I will "waste" second unlock on the V7 update and will get it for free :D

I agree, you got ripped for one unlock of version 6.

If they had sent you version 6 to begin with (like they said) then you would still have one good unlock left to be used on aother gps if you got one.

Now you have no unlocks left.

so now I have a question....If I have no Unlocks left for my version 4 and I get the upgrade to version 6, how many unlocks will I get???

Thanks for the info..now I know I need to find this out before I upgrade.

don't get confused...

let's say you bought CS v5. garmin's software licensing allows you to unlock (and thus load detailed maps) to 2 unique gps units that YOU own (not to be shared with other people).

now version 6 comes along... whether you got a free update or you had to pay, once you had done so, you would be entitled to update to v6 detailed maps on both of your gps units.

here's the thing... whenever you update you don't get any new "unlocks". all you get is the right (and a code) to load the new updated maps onto the SAME gps units you originally unlocked.

so essentially once you've installed your software on 2 unique gps units, to load to a 3rd gps you need to rebuy the software - not just buy an update...

OK, so my version 4 still has an unlock left on it...

somehow, version 6 will know that my gps V already has 4 installed on it and it will update. I still will be able to load version 4 and then 6 onto a new 76cs when/if I get one. Thats fair enough if it works that way.

OK, so the thing to remember is "dont unlock the same unit twice" you use the new code given to you for 6 (which is not an unlock code but an update code).'

I still think that the loading software should be smart enough to not allow you to waste an second unlock on the same gps unit. I can see me making the same mistake as "wornout"

I just finished a couple of calls to Garmin Tech support. Here's the scoop as they told me.

City Select software will come with a "Registration Code." This code will give you the right to request 2 unlock codes for your own units. Each unlock code is an algorithm that is tied to the specific serial number of your GPS unit. So, it will only work on one unit (not all units of that model).

The first unlock code that you get will be tied to that GPS and to your original version of City Select's registration code. When you buy updates to City Select you will be able to get a new unlock code for the 1st GPS and an additional one. So, if you first unlocked City Select with your GPS V, then that unit is forever married to the City Select Registration Code. However, you may get an unlock code for an additional GPS. That unit may change with future updates.

The City Select Update CD will only install if there is a previously installed full version of City Select on your computer.

Whew. Confusing, but I finally think I got it.

I hope not. After installing the v6 upgrade (over the v5 upgrade over the v4 full) I blew away v4 and v5. Hopefully it sees v6 when I upgrade to v7 next year.

I think the key is that you need a fully functioning copy on the computer. So, you are fine. If you get a new computer, or have to reinstall all of your software, you will probably need to install v4 to be able to install the latest update CD.

Hopefully Garmin upgrades work somewhat like Microsoft upgrades do. When you install a Microsoft upgrade and the old version of the application is not already on the computer, you can put the disk for the old version into the CD drive and the installation routine will find it and verify eligibility for the upgrade so there is no need to install the old version before the upgrade version. Does anyone know if this will work for Garmin upgrades? RM
